Dragon Masters is a pretty good series—the writing is good for that level and it’s nicely diverse and has female main characters. By book 20 it’s super repetitive but aren’t they all at that point? 8 is a reasonable age to be reading them, they’re not baby books. I know an 11 year old who still dips into them because she likes the characters.
Wings of fire was my kids next step and it was a big one—definitely more YA. There’s violence and fighting and dragons die, also crushes. There’s like 15 plus add ons that are not strictly part of the series but go into more detail of side stories. I know some people hate them, but I loved them for my kid. They’re really thoughtful about friendship and giving people second chances and not judging, they offer up diverse characters and introduce queer love interests with no drama. It’s all about learning to understand other dragons how they can do more together. Also they eventually stop eating the humans. The audiobooks are also excellent.
There have been a lot of dragon books in my house the last few years.

Whenever a book series is really popular my nature is to distrust the reviews and assume I wouldn't like it. I would say 50% of the time I do actually end up reading and liking the series. The other 50% I hate read it and wonder how so many people could like it. This is me with TV shows...

I fucking loved Ariana Grande’s cotton candy Oscar look. I’m also loving her new album, the production is so good and she learned how to sing in English. I thought English was her first language. What do you mean? I think Mumbling is her first singing language...

100poppies have you/your kid(s) read the How To Train Your Dragon series? We’ve tried the first one 3 times. He thinks the characters are rude and can’t get past it. Same reason we keep getting stuck in the Hobbit (those “dang dwarves” just invite themselves over and eat all the food!). I would have thought a 9 year old boy would like that but mine doesn’t. I’d definitely try it though!
