After the last weekend in July, I'm a little nervous about the weather forecast here for today. Forecasters are throwing around the D word.

Forecasters are throwing around the D word. It's been a decade and that was still one of the scariest weather events I've ever experienced. I hope it's not as bad as they're predicting. We're in yellow on the map.

I finally had a moment to pull the DEI resources that I promised mrsweasley. @icedtea do you still want them as well?

We're expecting the nasty weather from the Midwest by this afternoon. There's quiet talk of tornados from meteorologists. That's not something we typically encounter up here. Straight line winds, yes. Tornados, very rarely. I think we had one last year and it didn't even crack F1. Beyond that I can't really remember any that actually touched down around us.

Oh wow. It doesn’t affect us since H is wfh, but I’m glad they are trying to get people home before it hits.

Seems like the summer storms always hit at evening commute time. I drove home through a couple of bad storms and it was always awful.

We're supposed to get off and on storms all week in our neck of the woods. But thankfully we're out of line of anything too severe. Our area still hasn't fully recovered fromt he derecho that hit us at the end of June. Of course, my town had a water main burst yesterday so we're on a boil order.

We were driving during that derecho in 2012 and it was one of the scariest drives of my life.
I’m off today but saw an email from work that anyone in the office should leave. (Getting panicked texts from my mom now too.)
Stay safe, everyone!!!

Yikes to the weather forecast. The last derecho in DC put a tree branch through my parents’ roof. Hope it blows by easily this time, or it doesn’t materialize.

I was on the Beltway around 2:30 p.m. and it definitely seemed like everyone was going home early. It was like peak rush hour at 230.

In weather related legislation, Dems are working on making extreme heat a Federal Emergency. This is a good bill. Unhoused people are ending up in burn units because the outdoor surfaces they sleep on are hot enough to cause second degree burns. And the covid-era report on HVAC subsystems around the country showed that an unconscionable number of k-12 schools don't have adequate cooling and ventilation. Something has to be done, because these problems are not going awayml.

WE actually got out for high heat days back then. Now, all the classrooms have window units, but the halls are still not air conditioned. I can't even imagine how much money it would take to renovate the building to put in AC. The middle school and high school have both been replaced since I was a kid, so they do have a central AC.

We're in yellow on the map. What is the D word? We’re in DC this week, staying next to the White House. We were doing college visits, and had to leave early because the whole university shut down at 4 due to the weather threat. DH and DS were out at the air and space museum by Dulles and that was shut down at 3pm. We’re stuck in our hotel, trying to figure out what to do about dinner.
