Parenting teenagers is my source of stress this summer. DD1's BFF has been living with us since getting kicked out of her house upon turning 18. She graduated by the smallest of margins and still doesn't have her driver's license. So driving is her summer project. DD1 is applying to college. Despite being super gung ho a few months ago, reality has kicked in and she's very much over it. Getting her essays written is her summer must-do. And DD2, my triple A kid, wants nothing what-so-ever to do with driving, but also refuses to take any form of public transportation, including a school bus. (That's going to hit a critical path once DD1, aka- her ride to school, is off the college!) So- driving is also her summer activity. She got her permit (grudgingly) and is now in the "driving lesson" part of driving school. Every lesson is pulling teeth.
That's not including any nonsense DD3 stirs up. At least her nonsense is of the elementary school variety and a little easier (and less expensive!) to solve.
If I'm not fully white-headed by the time September rolls around, it will be miraculous.

Arriving back from vacation this morning and reading my email for the first time in 10 days: I've been volunteered for new project to lead with major impact for my org (like yikes!! I'm really not a SME in this what were they thinking holy shit canoe balls), internally telling myself if I don't get this promotion I've been waiting 3 years for after leading this kind of program I'm quitting, grumble grumble
afternoon: you got the promotion!
It's been a day!

I'm having a moment of being in my feelings because I finally got around to listing the crib/toddler bed combo on my local buy nothing group. It's past time, we're done having kids, and yet I'm having a hard time letting it go.

I sold quite a bit in a friend's garage sale last summer and it was definitely like ripping off a bandaid

Do you all vacation with family such a ILs?
I know this depends on relationships but I don't see the need to do it and trying to work through why I am not excited for the offer.

We rent a beach house each summer for a week with MIL, her long time boyfriend, and DH's aunt. It's a lot, and not without it's challenges, but we all keep wanting to do it again each year. It has it's special moments!

We do a week with my ILs. I do have moments of frustration. But I try to prevent some of that by making sure that we have our own bedrooms and space and time alone. We also spending some time on the beginning talking about plans, restaurants we want to go to, etc. Obviously things can change but it gives up a better chance of not spending an hour trying to figure out where to eat, what time we will leave, etc. My ILs ar the type who are fine to let us do everything. Like my H will cook breakfast and they will say that they will do the dishes. But they are also the type to wait until they have had lunch to wash them all together. I end up doing them because I can’t stand dishes in the sink. Haha

Haha Yes, my MIL empties the trash can when it's half full and then complains no one else empties it and it's like if you just give us all a moment, we would! Creating a plan is good point- we've evolved over time to make a dinner schedule and I think we are going to have a kitchen cleaning/trash emptying schedule, and also implement quiet hours til like 7 am (MIL likes to empty the dishwasher at 5:30 am) next year. We definitely don't spend every moment of every day together.

We met FIL for a week last summer. It was great. The kids loved seeing him and it was nice to have an extra adult around. I actually came up with the idea because he recently moved further away and it's hard for us to go see him and vice versa. H decided that we'd do the same with his mother this summer and I am not looking forward to it. Our relationship is extremely different. I think it really depends on the relationship you have with the people on how you feel about it. Realistically, we see FIL a lot more than MIL. But that's because he makes the time for us. We haven't seen MIL since 2019. And we always have to go to her or be on her time. It's exhausting. If she lived nearer and we saw her more I would not vacation with her.

Yes this is likely my feeling of not seeing the need. We see each other at least every other month, if not more often. Years ago, we lived thousands of miles away and visited once a year, but now we are a quick day trip apart. I agree that there may be special moments to make it worth the effort. Thank you all for that perspective.

So... my husband got sick last week and ended up giving it to me. I started feeling really crappy Tuesday afternoon. Lots of sinus pressure, cough, chest congestion, and just overall feeling crappy. I noticed when I took a shower last night that my freshly washed towel smelled like laundry detergent. My sense of smell has been awful since June 2020, but I can tolerate a lot more than I used to. Soaps and cleaning products have been really difficult to tolerate, along with coffee, chocolate, and peanut butter, but I still dismissed it. We picked up Jersey Mike's for dinner, and when I started eating the food, it tasted normal. I also tried a Reese's and it tastes like a Reese's. I told my husband if I didn't feel like death, I'd cry. This morning I decided to get a cold brew from Dunkin. I usually can barely stand to be in the drive thru line because the coffee smell is so nauseating, but it wasn't this time, and my coffee tastes normal. It's the first time I've tasted coffee in over 3 years. I cried lol. I've heard similar stories from others with parosmia, and sometimes it stays fixed, but sometimes it comes back. Sometimes it comes back worse. I've been stuck at about 75% recovered for well over a year, so I have everything crossed that this sticks. I told my husband if it comes back, I'm going to start licking doorknobs lol. I tested myself for Covid and it was negative. I've got one more test that's good through the end of August, but I'm guessing this is just a summer cold. I got one last year and my sense of smell/taste never got any better. I never thought I would smell anything normal again.

We do beach vacations with both my family and the ILs during the summer. I love it because The Beach! and because I find it is easier to visit with my ILs in a neutral location. It really limits the power struggles and feelings of resentment. Plus it is nice to have extra adults around to wrangle the kids so that H and I can get away for some couple time. I do take time/space for myself if I find that I am getting irritated by all the togetherness and H backs me up in doing so. I do the same for him when we visit my family.

Having our own space for vacation is a must for us. ONE year while H and I were dating we slept on the couch that pulled out to a sofa bed. I hated it. Waiting on others to go to bed so I could go to bed, having to go into another bedroom to use the bathroom, showers, etc.
We now get a 3 bedroom so even the girls have their own space.

We go on vacation to my MILs house bc she’s in FL and has a pool. It’s a nice getaway from the Midwest winter and reason to see her / have her see the kids. We’ve never done a planned vacation somewhere else with her, though.

Ugh. Ds1 is just cycling every couple of weeks with spiking a high fever on and off for a few days and negative on all tests so it’s just random virus (?) wreaking havoc on him and our lives. I feel so badly that he feels like such crap every 3-4 weeks. His fever was 105 last night after Tylenol and it wouldn’t come down. Finally came down to 101 but ugh. He responds better to Advil but that’s only every 6 hours ya know. I’m just so tired of him being constantly sick.

I have been loving all of Margot Robbie's Barbie pink carpet looks (the Day-to-Night Barbie was *chef's kiss*, that was one of my favorites growing up). I really hope I can get to see it in the theater.

We vacation w/ H's entire family (8 adults and 6 kids) for 1-2 weeks every summer in a not-big-enough house and it's mostly great. It was definitely tricky when everyone started having babies and all the kids were little but now with 4 kids 5 and up and just two toddlers it's getting a lot easier to manage. We live far from everyone so it's nice to see all the kids together and they all generally get along and have a lot of fun. But everyone is all extremely kind and generous and accommodating and I genuinely enjoy their company.

The girls really want to see Barbie. I'm hoping it's not too grown-up for them to enjoy. I don't doubt the innuendos and suggestive language will go over their heads.
