byjove have you looked into HSP for you? Itβs a character trait not a βdisorderβ, so most doctors arenβt going to diagnose it. But there are a few quizzes online and some great books and website for coping strategies - check out Elaine Aron.

Interestingly, I asked the psychiatrist if it is unusual for kids with ADHD to struggle so much with the meds, and he said it is common to see it with kids that are a combined austim/ADHD presentation. To which I was like well is that something we need to be considering? And he said no if she is able to maintain friendships and doesn't have certain types of patterns, but I am curious. I know with girls it can be tricky to identify. DH has ADHD and I'm something, though I don't know what, though I have dealt with sensory issues since forever and got a diagnosis for them in 2nd grade back when that was pretty unusual. DH and I both relate to multiple autistic traits. But I am extremely sensitive to medication, so it's possible DD is just following in my foot steps. So I am admittedly new to the ASD world but I dove in headfirst and have been following a lot of autistic adults (mostly female) on IG and other advocacy accounts and this is really something to say given the immense variety of ways autistic people can present their neurodivergent traits. Not saying that it means your daughter for sure has it, but it doesn't seem like it would be the worst thing to at least get an evaluation. Neuropsych evals are months/years out around here so even if you get her on a few lists and later you decide its likely not part of the issue, you can just remove yourself from any waitlists. FWIW, I also didn't really know if my son was autistic because in my limited experience/knowledge of the traits, I thought because he was so affectionate and responded appropriately to social cues, he likely wasn't. Now I see him and his ND traits in a new way and understand the phrase "If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person." I also relate to a lot of the traits/feelings that the female autistic adults discuss that I follow which has had me questioning a lot. But I also know that many of these things I relate to now have only come about after being in a 8 year long abusive relationship, so I think they are more related to my brain chemistry permanently changing that way.

But thanks for bringing that up. I'll check that out.

jkjacq leahcar that's good to know. I hadn't seen those in my googling for ADHD. She's already on celexa for anxiety/mood.

I'm honestly not sure what we'll do for the time being, other than file that away as a tidbit. Her ADHD seems to be the major issue for the time being, and the psych said we are basically taking the autism/ADHD combined med approach by starting vvv slow. But I agree with what you are saying.

byjove, it might be worth looking into an evaluation by an autism specialist to rule out the dual diagnosis. Thereβs so much misunderstanding about what it means to be on the spectrum. You can definitely be autistic while maintaining close friendships and enjoying/seeking out social interactions. But masking autistic tendencies and figuring out the complexities of social interactions may also require more effort and produce more anxiety for autistic people, even if they seem like pros at social skills. There can be so much overlap between ADHD and ASD traits. Challenges with executive functioning, appropriate social interactions, emotional regulation, hyperfocus, and rejection sensitivity are common to both. I know with DS, it can be hard to tell where one starts and the other begins. Honestly, a lot of his therapies over the years have targeted the challenges so that he learns healthy coping mechanisms without worrying overly much if the challenge is due to ASD, ADHD, or both. Especially the EF and emotional regulation stuff.

byjove my son is autistic, has anxiety and adhd. We needed to treat his anxiety first and started him on celexa with good results. We added intuniv a year later and have had good results for 4 years. We just tried increasing his intuniv from 2-3mg and he had a depressive episode. It was tricky because it coincided with the start of the school year and I just thought that (and puberty) was the cause. His therapist actually told us about the depression/intuniv connection. We were able to go back to 2mg and increase his celexa for great results. They definitely have an additive effect on each other and weβve had to tweak dosing combinations in the past. He did have a Genesight test when we started adhd meds so we didnβt have to resort to trial and error too much. Good luck.

beaf12, yes, intuniv was the one that caused the depressive episode but even at 1 mg. We thought it might go away, so we made it a week at 2 mg before we called it quits. We saw no benefits. Hoping strattera does the trick!

byjove straterra didnβt work for us but it didnβt cause any weird side effects either. I just wanted to say I know how hard and exhausting this is. Hang in there.

Ls2012, I am so sorry. π addymac, oh noooooo! I was shocked at how fast mastitis comes on and how terribly sick I was. Hopefully you get antibiotics and get to feeling better ASAP.
