Those of you who had kids in school the whole time, how did you stay sane? Less than 2 weeks in and we got our first email that a child in Pip's class tested positive for Covid. The only thing keeping my anxiety in check is knowing that the school has a mask mandate. January can't get here fast enough (assuming a decent chunk of kids are fully vaxed at that point). I think sane is a vast exaggeration. For the first 8 weeks of school, with 2 kids in the same school but different grades, I didn’t have both kids in class all week one single time. Not until they both covid and got sent home for 10 days. My kids were also the only children wearing masks.

Our very own stringy helped me find appts at a clinic a few towns over. For both kids. On Monday! Thanks, strings. You’re the best.

We’ve been in person since Sept. 2020. We had a really strict mask mandate and other safety measures, and they worked. All of our school Covid cases were traced to out of school functions and sports. (But somehow sports were allowed to continue even when the whole basketball team was quarantined, but normal school activities were restricted…) The bad part was that we weren’t notified about positive cases, either as a parent or as a teacher. I was told that if a kid who played trumpet in my class got Covid I wasn’t considered a close contact. It was scary but better than remote learning (or teaching) IMO. The idea of kids in school without masks blows my mind.

Alcohol and chocolate. F has been in daycare since July 2020 and we have been crossing our fingers that parents are sane and keep kids safe. The good thing about masks is we have had a lot less illness from F. And medical bills have been at a minimum. Can we keep masks?

I was able to reschedule M’s shot for today after work right near her school. I haven’t told her yet bc she gets so worked up about it. Maybe I’ll offer to let her pie me in the face.

No one has gotten pied in the face here yet - either he forgot or he is waiting until after the second shot to bring it up. Time will tell LOL. I did let him go to town on his halloween candy for a little bit though so maybe that distracted him enough to forget about it.

M is super not excited about the shot, and H is thrilled to get it. A doctor who draws comics posted this: M will love a reason to fake-cough (strictly banned here!) and maybe I’ll offer a distraction.

P and I played vaccine tonight. She still cried for her sister to give her a fake shot. But we practiced how I would hold her and found puppy videos to watch. We decided on puppy power for our mantra. Will try again tomorrow.
She randomly starts crying about it. Poor kid doesn’t know there’s a second shot.

We've opted to pay the kids $10 each per shot. We gave them a choice of several things (ice cream, doughnuts, money toward toys) and they chose money. DH is happy to keep paying the kids for shots forever, but I'm more inclined to keep it to covid. That said, M is SUPER needle-anxious and her anxiety seems to disappear with the prospect of having money to spend at the toy store. I mean, $10 per shot is way cheaper than therapy.

This is why R loves going to Target for her flu shot... They have out a $5 coupon with every vaccine, and she was allowed to spend it on whatever (usually gum). This year, it was a $5 off $20 purchase, which was kinda lame, but we just let them pick out $5-$6 worth of whatever snacks they wanted. Chex Mix and fruity gum and everyone was happy

For those that are curious... R (9) and A (7) got their first doses and said they barely felt the poke. They each had a mildly sore arm right at the injection site, but way less sore than their flu shots.

J got a 10 dollar Amazon gift card from the state when he got his shot and it was perfect. I didn't know he was getting it and you would have thought he won the lottery when they handed it to him with a sucker 😆.

I have M's cold now so did a rapid on myself this morning just in case. Negative! So damn stressful though. I hate wondering if every little sniffle is Covid. I cancelled my ortho appt for tomorrow though, which majorly sucks because now I likely won't get an appt until well into 2022 because they are so backed up. The only reason I got one this month is because someone cancelled literally while I was on the phone scheduling an appt for as early as they could fit me- which was March. I have a bone spur on the top of my foot that is growing and causing issues so I'm assuming I'm going to need surgery at some point.
Dear diary, my gosh.

My state begins vaccinating 5-12 today! 👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I haven’t been able to register DS1 yet but am hoping to get a spot ASAP. I think they will do it in schools eventually but I’d rather not wait.

Well that was hell. P panicked. Our practice did nothing. She cried. She wiggled free. I held her down. She screamed like a she was being stabbed. And on the way out said “at least I never have to do this again I hope. I hope the germs never come back.”
She doesn’t know about the second round.
I think all of Walgreens heard her.

M is very nervous. It’s at 6:45… I promised a donut after but forgot to get doughnuts. But Dunks is open until 8… do they have doughnuts that late?!

Selection might be limited, but they should have some left. R told us "I might have to miss our shots tomorrow." MH and I just stared at her like 'where the heck will you be? you're 6 years old.' Lol

I just scheduled my booster for Thurday night (was supposed to do it last weekend but rescheduled due to M & I's colds). My friend and I have appts 6 minutes apart, so we are going to go together and then get a drink afterwards. Shots & shots! Except we won't be doing drinking shots. We are excited.
What a weird world we are living in right now.

My girls are all shot up! Their school's clinic was super well run. The had a really good flow of traffic and they stayed on time throughout the day. The girl's shots were an hour apart (everyone went with their class), which worked out, so I could give each kid a bunch of personal attention. M was freaked the eff out. But I brought little halloween bags of Swedish Fish and just keep giving them one at a time. M was screaming so so much. We had a docent, the person giving the shot and the school nurse came over to help. M was most definitely not the only kid screaming and everyone seemed entirely unbothered. C wrapped herself up in a ball to avoid giving anyone access to her shoulder, but I finally gave her a big hug which got the person giving the shot what she needed.
I am so thrilled. This is just so wonderful.

I don’t know what to do about thanksgiving guys. We usually go to BMs brothers. Except he and another uncle are not vaccinated. And none of the other kids will be.
They all did have covid back in august bc they are dumb. Including the kids. So their parents think they are now immune. Youngest is almost 2. Others all over 5.
Mine have had their first shots. No one is especially at risk or immune compromised. My kids are dying to go because the alternate is another holiday here at home fighting with each other.
I have lots of feelings but I also feel okay with our somewhat protection. Things aren’t super bad here right now. WWYD?

2/3 ovenrack kids have one shot!
The community clinic was kind of a mess resulting in unexpectedly waiting outdoors in 40°F darkness for an hour. But the kids did amazingly and M’s anxiety was mostly silent and they let her sit on my lap during the shot.
They didn’t schedule the next shot so hopefully I can snag one and not be scrambling in 3 weeks. Oh well. I’m too tired to be annoyed.

The CDC says that you have immunity for at least 3 months post-natural infection. It's probably longer, but that's what they're willing to say definitively. This is probably your best window to hang out with them without concern.

My 6yo daughter said it didn’t even hurt. My 9yo son said it felt like someone stabbed him with a knife and he doesn’t think he’ll be able to use his arm. Which was about what I expected.
