DD2 has speech at 7:15 this morning. It was a very early start to our Spring Break for everyone to be up, fed, and dressed by the time she showed up. DD2 is getting better about mimicking and using some signs but still no words. We are to keep working on signing for now. I feel like if she could communicate better, the tantrums would be less.

Yay for the last week of March! My dad is coming to visit in early April, so that means we’re getting closer to his arrival. I can’t wait for the boys to see him - it will be so much fun. Yesterday we jumped the gun on Easter and made these really yummy Italian Easter cookies. We gave most of them away, but I think we’re going to make them again as it gets closer to April 21st. The frosting was eggcellent. Hehehe. Recipe for those interested: www.allrecipes.com/recipe/19199/italian-easter-cookies/print/?recipeType=Recipe&servings=48&isMetric=falseHere’s what they look like - granted, DS1 and I decorated them...we’re no pastry chefs. But they did taste great 👍

Oh yes, the tantrums danvers. SO MANY. For a while I've been saying "It'll get better when he's not teething and when he can communicate better" and I just don't even believe myself anymore. Add in all the sickness we've had plus DS1's 3.5-year-old emotions/bosiness/attitude....

danvers has a LO who won’t talk, cythe has one who won’t walk. These O17 babies need to get it together, stat! We are dealing with sickness, I know others are too. First it was baby, then me, now big kid. Took him to the doctor today because he’s on day 4 of a fever. Poor kid. Not the flu and no secondary infections tho so there’s that and he’s big enough to take mucinex and robitussen which is nice. Wish he would get better though, I feel so bad for him. FX hubby doesn’t get it!

DS talks but that does not appear to help the tantrums over here 😬 He does this stand and tense his whole body whilst yelling tantrum, it’s super loud and intense. He’s a spitfire this one

Also danvers 7:15 is so early for a speech visit 😳 I don’t even like to call families before like 8:30/9:00 lol. We do start work at 8 so occasionally would do an 8:15 but even that is rare

danvers I’m sure I’m asking things you’ve already answered, so sorry for making you repeat. But does D2 say mama or anything? Did your pedi recommend testing? I’m not super worried about DS2 but I’m starting to go there. He can say mama and dah (dog) every animal but that is it. He doesn’t try any other sounds 😕

DS1 has herpangina 😩. I also have a cold that I must have caught from my work trip last week.
I hope we didn’t infect those Easter cookies we made and gave away 😬
We washed our hands a lot while making them, so I’m 99% sure we’re okay. But still - probably wouldn’t have given them away if I’d known DS1 and I were incubating germs.
Now the game is trying to make sure DS2 doesn’t get either of the conditions. I guess we’ll see how that goes. Argh. Herpangina is sooooo contagious.

curmudgeon you didn’t ask me but I’m an early intervention SLP so this is my wheelhouse At 18 months we expect 10-20+ words. Animal sounds or word approximations (doesn’t have to sound “right” as long as they are using it consistently as their word) count as words. There is variability for sure but it is worth bringing up at your 18 month appointment if you still have concerns. My word of warning is to be aware that paediatricians are not the experts in speech. I deal with kids all the time who had pedis tell parents to wait and see or that they were just late talkers (way less common than people think) etc. Then at 3, 4, or even 5 they are finally diagnosed as severely delayed and have missed out on literally years of services. The earlier intervention is started the more likely it is that kids will be caught up by school (which is the ultimate goal of early intervention). So long story short, if you are concerned and your pedi brushes you off, push to consult an SLP. I would always rather err on the side of caution and assess and find out they are fine than wait and miss out on services. I’m in Canada so unfortunately I can’t help with the procedure or services or anything

I’m not super worried about DS2 but I’m starting to go there. He can say mama and dah (dog) every animal but that is it. He doesn’t try any other sounds 😕 DD2 has not a word. There is some “mamama” babbling but it’s not connected to me as “mom” personally. I pushed for speech at her 15 month appt because it can take awhile to qualify and get services started where I am at for EI. Pedi was content to wait but was also willing to do what I wanted. DD1 had 10 or so words at 18 months and she still qualified for speech as most of her words were “soft” words that were mostly common babbling sounds (mama, dada, ni-ni, by-by, etc). If you’re concerned I would push for at least an eval. Not sure how your state does it but ours comes to you, or even daycare if you can’t miss work. I took off just so I could be there and answer any questions since I really wanted to get DD2 qualified and receive services. I pushed because my SIL did the whole “our side of the family is just late talkers” thing and now both of my nieces and nephew are in intensive speech therapy for language delays at 3, 5, and 7. But she has to take them to therapy twice a week as opposed to EI coming to me because mine are/were under 3 when serviced (she homeschools or the public school system would have picked up their services now).

We probably need to do speech as well as PT which of course makes me feel like a failing parent. Cant teach my kid to talk, cant teach her to walk. Sigh.
She just laughs at me when we work on words, so wheee.

Lil fella over here just laughs at me when I say NO! as he rams and crams his cars and books under the sofa and stove and oh yeah, shoving broccoli up his nose now. Oy! ETA. Big hugs and it's completely natural to feel all that you do. Keep us updated on E's appts. and progression. Is she showing more interest in pulling up? Also I noticed when they start one thing, it's natural for them to not want to do it again for another week or 2. One day at a time girl is all you can do.

danvers doodlemommy that's actually not too early. My nephew has his PT and speech at 7am before school and also my sister needs to get to work ( it's private - he gets his state mandated therapy sessions on at school now )

CoachTsWife I've totally given up making assumptions or excuses albeit it makes me feel better but yeah...also I think with #2 it kinda helped to expect it and just KOKO. How are the kiddos doing? Everything on the up and up besides the tantrums and clingy 3.5 yr old? I remember when DS was that age, he's still somewhat clingy and demanding even at almost 5.

bootsorhearts1 Taitai hopefully it only gets better from all the sickness. Knock on wood, we've all been good for about 2 weeks now! on the other hand, usually 2 -3 weeks is the most we can get before someone getting sick, usually DS in his plague infested petri dish called classroom. Also Taitai those cookies sound delicious and as long as they're yummy who cares what they look like. Are they like sugar cookies? From the recipe, I am guessing they're soft and not crunchy? I am so tempted to test sugar cookie recipes for easter and a carrot cake and key lime pie or something but I am really trying to refrain from baking too much sweets outside of birthdays and celebrations. I did finally find a good scone recipe which is easy, unfussy without special ingredients - now I just have to figure out how to make clotted cream! danvers how is baby girl doing besides speech? I recall reading she's needing more in depth blood panel? Keep us posted too and fx she's building up her immunity with all she's had.

Serial poster here back at it again Sorry ladies, I've been spending most nights just hanging out with hubs since we actually have the house to ourselves after the kiddos are in bed and fixing toys and taping up books etc. We have quite a little destroyer here. After the crazy blizzard we had, btw Taitai we're at 5280 above sea level and on the front range. They same system that came through is what's causing all the massive flooding in the midwest now. This week is in the 40s and 50s! and there's forecast for snow on Friday so much for Spring. It's not uncommon to have snowstorms right into May. Speaking of speech, I've been teaching DS some Malay words and he speaks them with such a strong foreign accent ??? .....and now little fella is up from his 1 hr nap! Catch up later.

My nephew has his PT and speech at 7am before school and also my sister needs to get to work ( it's private - he gets his state mandated therapy sessions on at school now ) Before 7:00am -yikes! 😳😳😳 we barely made the 7:15 with everyone being dressed and fed (and house in a presentable condition for company), but before 7:00 every week would be a lot! 😬 normally DD2 is at daycare so it’s not a big deal but it’s Spring Break this week here so H and I stayed up way too late to be functioning humans again by 7:00am DD2 is doing more extensive blood work and testing at the end of April at our “local”-ish children’s hospital. Her blood work here came back with elevated IGA and/or IGG levels (both or one? Not sure?) It could be nothing or it could be something. She is not currently sick and hasn’t been for over a month so knock on wood were on a a long streak here!!!!

I got my haircut today and it feels amazing, it had been way to long! We are heading on vacation tomorrow to visit my great aunt and while I’m really looking forward to 97.5% of it I am dreading trying to keep DS from destroying her place 😬 She is 84 and has a penthouse condo the same size as my whole house. It is full of glass figurines, coffee tables, grandfather clock, you name it she has it. She would absolutely not care if he broke something but obviously we would be mortified. We go visit yearly but last year DS was only just crawling so couldn’t get into much, this year will be a different story

She just laughs at me when we work on words, so wheee. You are absolutely not failing as a parent. Advocating for your kid and seeking out help when you need it makes you a great mom. Speech is a weird enigma where there often is no direct cause for a delay (barring the obvious ones like a global diagnosis or some kind of medical event etc), while that can be frustrating it also is reassuring that there is nothing you could have done differently to prevent it. For now just narrate what you do, use the same types of words and use them lots. If she doesn’t repeat them right away that’s ok, but the more input she gets (people talking) the better!

They’re kind of like soft sugar cookies - but with a lot of almond flavor. The buttercream frosting adds some slight saltiness too (we used salted butter for the cookies and the frosting). They’re good 👍. I thought they tasted best 2-3 days after we made them, and then they were gone so I don’t know how they are on day 4 😁 If you end up making them for Easter, I think they’d be a hit! Carrot cake or key lime pie sounds amazing too. Key lime is my fav.

Busy week here, Work is transitioning to some new processes that have not been planned for so it’s very disastrous but I’m not management so I just keep on with my job and try not to stress out.
DD1 just started saying more words, or attempting to, we have very few clear ones but we definitely know what they mean. I was starting to get worried too but it’s like a switch went off last week and she’s talking more.

Hi all. It's been a busy week so far. DS seems to be thisclose to having his second bottom canine push through the gum, and he has been a MESS the past few days. We will have a few good days and then a whole week or more of tough days. I know he hates feeling bad too, but I just want my sweet boy back. Re: speech - my DD had a delay that we kept an eye on and finally got evaled once she turned two and had maybe 3 words. She went through one year of weekly therapy through our state program, and now she talks nonstop! But her delay has made me hypersensitive about DS's speech. doodlemommy, I appreciate your insight because it makes me feel better. DS has somewhere around 15-20 consistent words. One of my best friends has a little girl that's 7 weeks older than him and probably has 50 words, including 2-3 word phrases. I'm admittedly the worst at comparing, but I have to remember that she is older than him AND every child is different. I'm a firm believer in the mom gut and to push EI when necessary, so that is my only advice to anyone who has concerns.

And, cythe you're doing great! I wrote something similar about DD, when she had a delay. I felt like I totally failed her and blamed the delay on my momming ability. I typed out a 'drowning in my sorrows' post on my BMB and everyone reminded me that the fact that I have concerns and am willing to seek the necessary treatments - meant I was a kick-ass mom. And, you are too! Every kid is different and learns at their own pace. E is lucky to have such an attentive mother, and if she's anything like my DD, she just gets her stubbornness from her daddy.

I really do apologize for sounding like a broken record guys, I know you've all been shoer supportive every time I cry about my parenting here. Its just so overwhelming basically solo parenting. Everything feels like a reflection of my parenting because no grandparents influence, no daycare influence and H gets home M-F about 10 mins before she goes to bed.

Side note - I'm dealing with an ingrown toenail with DD (3.5) if anyone has any advice. I've been trying to treat it at home, but it looks like we're going to have to have it cut out. ::sob::
