My DDs have been so challenging lately and I am feeling really anxious about how they will be when baby gets here. I know it will all work out, but I really hope they go easy on me.

Same with my boys! I just need them to bring it down a level or two. And if DS1 could lose the teenager "Why do I have to do it if [fill in the blank]..." attitude, that'd be great.

I feel like I’ve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden it’s all coming back to me 😬.

I feel like I’ve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden it’s all coming back to me 😬. Dude. Same. It didn't take much to figure out breastfeeding with DS1 but I really struggled with my supply. With DS2, I didn't have supply issues until I went back to work but breastfeeding was 100x more painful to the point of crying the first couple weeks (though people didn't guess it because he gained weight just fine). We didn't know until like, 6 months ago that the kid has a lip tie >.< Can't imagine that helped our journey.

I feel like I’ve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden it’s all coming back to me 😬. Brought to you by my night. LO did some great nursing earlier but it is WORK to get him to do it. He just doesn’t want to open up his mouth wide enough to get a proper latch. He definitely would prefer to sleep. Fortunately he already has had a wet diaper and a poop diaper so I don’t feel too bad letting him take a break but man. I hope we can do better tomorrow.

I feel like I’ve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden it’s all coming back to me 😬. I nursed DS from 6 pm until 10 pm last night, I was so upset, it felt like he was never going to be full. He gave me 5 hours of sleep as a thank you, I only had to nurse him for 10 minutes after a three hour stretch. 🙌🙌🙌 I feel like I got 12 hours of sleep. Thanks little guy. 😅

I have also been worrying about the early nursing days. My nips were cracked and bleeding with DD around the time my milk came in and it was painful for weeks. Thankfully, the TT revision really helped the pain and until that nipple shields were my BFFs. Also, for those of you who don’t know, you can request your OB to write you a script for Dr. Jack Newman’s APNO (all purpose nipple ointment), it really helped when nursing DD in those first couple months and I know other mamas who swear by jt as well!

cch That nipple ointment saved me! DS was latched (poorly) for about an hour after he was born, and it took a bit to figure out how to get him latched better. My nipples were cracked and bleeding by the next day. An absolute angel of a nurse swooped in and saw what was happening, ordered the APNO, and I was already on my way to healing by discharge. I’m planning to request it up-front this time.

Nursing DS1 was super painful. I got conflicting diagnoses on a tongue tie, but ended up lasering it bc I was in so much pain. It got much better after the revision but I still don’t truly know if it was just that his mouth was getting stronger and we were getting the hang of it. With DS2 it was pretty much the same experience except we did not revise any tongue tie. Still lots of blood and pain. I basically had to scream into a pillow every time he latched on. after the two week mark it got significantly better. I applied nipple cream and expressed breast milk on my nips after every feed and was vigilant about a wide open mouth latch. My eyes would pop out of my head if I was able to nurse this babe without blood and tears, so I’m fully expecting it to suck for the first two weeks, but I just hope it’s not any worse. DS2 pAssed his birthweight by his 2 day check up at least so I didn’t have to stress about that. Feeding babies is hard!

I was only 32-33 weeks at the time and didn’t want her to call it in until a week or two before my DD but I guess I didn’t mention that so it’s already been filled. Picked it up Monday and it was $50 for 15g. Kinda bummed it was filled so early since I’ve read it’s still usable after 6mo but loses some of its magic after that time. Womp Womp

Circling back to the rooming in discussion, I’m having all kinds of guilt (which I know is silly) because the nurses keep taking LO out of our room. He’s having a lot of issues with coughing up mucus though. Birth story still to come but (spoiler) he came out so freakin fast that he spent next to no time in the birth canal and so didn’t get the gunk squeezed out properly, hence the mucus.
I’m so exhausted that I was falling asleep holding him a few minutes ago (not safe obviously) so I put him in his bassinet but within minutes he was gagging again. I called the nurse to let her know it happened again, and when she came in she insisted on taking him out so they can keep a close watch on him.
I know I should take advantage now and rest. I just really hope he gets everything cleared before we go home tomorrow because I am not going to be able to sleep at all unless I am confident he’s okay.
I also hope it clears because they think it’s a big reason he’s not looking to nurse. He’s coming up on 20 hours old and he has nursed 3 times (plus gotten many drops of colostrum that I put on his lips at every attempted feeding) so it’s not dire but I’m worried now about my milk coming in.
There is always something to worry about no matter how many babies you have! 😩

dashook seriously have no guilt about that! Try to get some rest while you can. Is YH there? I remember DS2 spit up a bunch of amniotic fluid. I also fell asleep holding him 😬. The nurse was less than nice about it. I can’t remember if she offered to take him or not though.

I hope you’re pleasantly surprised! Not everyone has issues, but I think it’s more common than not. It’s a steep learning curve for sure.

Definitely check with your insurance to see what kind of lactation consults are covered, and seek help as soon as you run into problems. My first visit with the LC took nursing from excruciating to normal painful, which lingered for 2-3 weeks. Then it became painless. Your hospital may also have a nursing/postpartum warmline which is free to use. Then you can call and speak to a nurse or LC with any questions. There are also La Leche League meetings, Baby Cafe (WIC but available to all) and new mom's groups who can provide breastfeeding support. So basically expect problems to happen and know what resources are available!

I go with the assumption of terrible expectations and anything better than that seems like I got cut some slack Lol Like I said, DS1 was a much better learning experience than DS2. Nothing cracked or bleeding the first time, all the pain the second time. I have no expectations for this third baby.

I remember when I first went to see an LC outside the hospital with DS1. The LC asked what the issues were. I said...”I’ll just take my shirt off and show you”. Her eyes about popped out of her head 😳. Lol. apparently she hadn’t ever seen such damaged nipples. but we worked through it. Nursed him 19 months!

dashook ds3 also spit up a TON in the first 30 hours. It would be like 3 hours after feeding and he would just wake up and hurl. The nurses said it was likely extra amniotic fluid. He's been so much better since he got it all out!

@amc yeah I am not opposed to pumping and feeding him from a syringe or bottle if needed until he starts to show more interest. Hoping not to have to but whatever he needs, I’ll do. He is an excellent nurser once he latches so I am optimistic. We’re just going to have to work at the latching. strawberrykiki I was worried about nursing too and it definitely is tough. There’s no getting around it. I almost gave up a few times with DS. In the end we went 16 months even though we had to use a nipple shield the whole time. It was worth it and I loved it. And I was rewarded with the most amazing nurser in DD. And I can’t wait to do it again with this new little guy!

dashook I hope your newest little is a good nurser! I’ve read about nipple shields but it seems like some people suggest it just as a temporary solution? What’s the harm or is there any if it helps give you some relief?

dashook I hope your newest little is a good nurser! I’ve read about nipple shields but it seems like some people suggest it just as a temporary solution? What’s the harm or is there any if it helps give you some relief? In general they are designed to be a temporary solution and a lot of moms use them to provide some protection if they have some damage while the damage heals. I definitely am in a vast minority in having used it for more than a couple weeks. But in our case DS1 had a mild tongue tie (which I opted not to clip) that prevented him from latching well onto my nipple because he couldn’t get his mouth around it properly. So the shield gave him a bigger target, if you will, and he did great with it. It is something extra that you have to carry with you always or else you’re kinda screwed. One time when he was like 8 months old I lost one and so I tried to latch him without it—disaster! That time I was able to pump and just give him a bottle and then go buy a new one the next day. But if you forget one at home and you are out in public somewhere, you don’t have a lot of options. Definitely pros and cons.

Ughhhhh This kid won't stop pressing her heel into my belly button! It's that or hooking herself up under my desk so that I can't scoot my chair back very easily. Rude.
