On the investment stuff - I agree with @juliagulia and @idubhawksfan - there's no need to do any heavy shifting (depending on your age). cmb summerbabe stringy and anyone else who raised questions about what to do with your investments/401k accounts.... ****disclaimer - I am not a personal finance advisor and I am not Warren Buffet, so please do not take below as 100% perfect advice. It is just my personal opinion, as someone who has worked in the investment banking/international investment field for a while.**** If you are in your 20s or 30s or 40s (unless you are considering really early retirement...like at 50) the standard guidance is that there is no need to move around your portfolio in anticipation of this next correction. Retirement savings is a long term game, and you actually want to have some assets in higher risk instruments. This is because when there is a crash, it's like the stock market is "on sale," and you can buy cheap/get good deals on stocks/equity that is undervalued. So, you don't want to take yourself out of that opportunity by moving everything to T-bills and low-risk mutual funds. Also...diversification is key. If you do invest beyond trusting your money to a 401k manager, I always recommend going for index funds in diverse sectors. For example, spread your money out between a real-estate oriented funds, energy funds, precious medals funds, large-cap/blue chip funds, high yield/small or micro cap funds. The diversification allows you to hedge/spread out your risk and not get completely screwed if one sector really tanks (and you had all your money in that). Vanguard uses this philosophy and has a variety of funds you can choose from. They are well managed (imo) and the fees are reasonable. Finally - unless you are a professional investor, trying to beat the market by anticipating downturns/growth will likely not work out for you. The people who manage 401ks and index funds do this for a living and are often compensated based on how the funds perform - they have skin in the game and are motivated to make you as most money as they can. Trust them to do their jobs, esp if you are decades out from retirement. Now, for those who are close to retirement, I would definitely recommend switching to lower risk portfolios. I am trying to convince my dad to do that right now, as he is eligible to retire next year and is waaay over-invested in stocks. But he is making so much in the market now that it's hard to convince him....sigh.... Edited: spelling

I can't believe this fucking tax bill might pass. Y'all, I'm genuinely scared that my life will change in ways like "we might lose our house or job" and "we can't afford a second kid," etc. Come bunk with us. We can start a commune.

My H is going “my 401k is long term so there’s time to recover...,” but with people saying they’re just now starting back at where they were before the last crash makes me shake my head at him. Granted, we’re in our late 20s and our kids are little so we do have time, but I don’t know if it’s really worth the risk of just playing wait and see or if we should just roll it to stable stuff and wait I worry more about our parents, who are nearing retirement. My MIL is not exactly financially strong to begin with, and a market crash could be truly devastating. Maybe that's the silver lining in my dad being a money-in-the-mattress type?

Sorry above post was kind of off topic from recent posts...being 12 hours opposite from the states kind of sucks on that front.
Also, I'm so sad they didn't send the horrible tax bill back to committee. Wtf - where are all the tea party spending hawks who were screaming about the debt ceiling and not adding more to the deficit? News flash - tax cuts are basically a form of government spending. The hypocrisy is just too much right now.

That is a lot of empty seats. Wow. And it was a really lovely warm-ish evening, too. When we went a few years ago, we waiting in line for over an hour even though we had tickets and it was a mob scene. And it was below freezing.

I've been napping off and on all afternoon fighting a stupid horrible cold and just flipped on cspan. Murkowski is talking about the tundra and drilling (in assuming). Are they still on the tax bill? She got ANWR drilling in exchange for her vote. Oh good! So we can destroy the economy, the healthcare system, AND the environment in one fell swoop. This is fine. Everything's fine.

I have many immediate thoughts on this. 1) it's astonishing to me that the response to this is "fewer immigrants" and not "fewer firearms." 2) If it's that easy to accidentally discharge a firearm, I'm doubling my hours of action with Everytown. 3) I understand the victim's family feeling frustrated that justice hasn't been "served" bc accidents are unjust and the entire situation is just straight up awful. 4) the disparity between the prosecution and defense record of alleged events is deeply troubling. It’s a tragic case and it affects people I love personally so I’m far from objective, but I feel justice was served. It’s really, really unfortunate how multiple failures led to this and just really bad circumstances, but I don’t believe he intentionally shot at her. That’s really hard for me to say and I wouldnt have said that when it first happened. I would like to see a civil suit brought against the agency that allowed an unsecured weapon to be stored in the trunk of a government vehicle. There is a large problem with legal weapons being stolen from law enforcement and government officials that needs to be addressed. I still grieve for her family and friends and no matter what it’s a horrible event. I hope it is not politicized further, but I know better.

What is this even saying? I’d have major issues if my child asked his teacher to come over naked. Why is this even something his child would say? Am I missing something?

But like srsly questioning my life choices rn. It's like they're trying to tax and punish everyone who wants to get educated and/or produce the products on which the economy depends... not to mention the blue states that drive the economy... not to mention that people who make less than $200k are the biggest drivers of the economy because they actually BUY STUFF when their wages go up instead of just hoarding it in secretive offshore accounts.

Yeah bc a government shutdown is really just a political opportunity. Ass. He would be surprised to know how many Trump voters are probably federal employees and will be pissed as hell about this. DING DING DING! Also, a lot of people who "switched over" for Trump did so because unlike the hardline Tea Party disruptors, who actually stopped the gears of government, the God-Emperor was such a man of the world and an amazing dealmaker omgggzzz on his golden toilet throne, and he was going to prevent bullshit deadlocks in Congress and really make change happen. Whoops.
