I think this is an example of (even the most liberal of) men categorizing women as either worthy of respect or not.
And to be honest, a lot of other women to do it to. I find myself guilty of falling into that (ETA: before I talk myself out of it).
UGH.

I’m very disappointed in Frankenstein, and at the same time I am not at all surprised and I hope more women keep speaking up about this shit. I want men to be held accountable for their shit behavior. Maybe we can start putting this patriarchy shit to bed. I’m tired of it.

His statement is so inadequate. But I find myself trying to think of something a man accused of this could say to make the situation better and I don't know what that would be.

Obviously only women are electable at this point, I'm just going to assume that every guy ever is going to end up being disappointing. Kamala Harris 2020!

Gay women objectifying other women as well. Maybe our whole culture just absolutely sucks at respecting other people. (Not that the disrespect of women by men isn't more prevalent/obvious).

I’m so disappointed to see the Franken story and his response is so lacking.
Are they really voting on this POS tax bill today?
I’m feeling so deflated right now.

I also look a lot at how the men behave going forward. If you did something inappropriate 20 years ago and you say, "My god, I see now how utterly inappropriate that was and I am so sorry" I'm going to look at you a lot differently than if you say, "This is false," "She was wearing a short skirt," etc Definitely this. Also, I think it’s easy to want to separate people into categories of good and bad. Moral absolutes are tempting. But it’s possible to have done good work and to have also done something terrible. Reading excerpts from Matt Taibbi’s Russia “memoir” has been hardest for me, in that respect. Even if it’s fictional, which is plausible, he was still making light of sexual harassment, brutal assault and just general misogyny. But since then, he’s done some of the best writing on social justice issues, particularly police brutality. That work is still good and important, even if Taibbi was or still is a misogynist ahole. There are some things that are unforgivable to me, and make it impossible for me to separate a person (writer/artist/politician, etc) from their work. Harming a child is a line. But I’m struggling to find what the line is in terms of offense, time, remorse, and good works and also allowing someone to evolve.

Kind of a tangent but somewhat related...a book I'm listening to on my commute (a self-awareness type) was talking about our western culture of competition and shame and its effects on the perception of self and mental health. I'm really struggling with how to raise my kids in this environment.

FYI Franken has a full statement on FB. He has asked for an ethics investigation and intends to cooperate fully. He admits that his actions were disgusting etc etc. And how people look at him doesnt matter but what people of think of the women who come forward to tell their stories and deserve to be heard. It doesnt make it better but at least there is none of the well if its true crap we've been seeing. Which doesnt make it right but at

Comstock is a yes. This House bill is going to pass and the Senate will probably let it roll through out of fatigue if nothing else. I can never vote for Franken again and Klobuchar's statement was disappointing as well. Life is shit.
I seriously haven't been this depressed since last November.

Speaking of last November. I fell asleep listening to an episode of 20/20 on the abc iPad app last night. Several hours later I stirred and what was being played through my earbuds was some show or footage about the 2016 election. So much no to waking up to that. Talk about a nightmare.

I just read Franken’s statement on Facebook. I am glad he is actually taking responsibility. The more women who come forward, the more I realize how fucked up our culture is. Sexual harassment and women being treated as lesser beings with no feelings, is a norm. I knew that before but it’s hitting home to me today just how bad it really is. I hope more people stop and listen. And I hope the accused continue to take responsibility. It’s the only way shit will change. Franken lost all my respect today but I respect his apology. I am not even sad. I’m just more ready to get a woman elected to the highest office in the land before I die.
