Hi all! This is where it is super handy that so many of you are on baby 2+ because you are way more in the know than me! I need a reality check.
So the last week I've been having really strange itching - it's been horrible, burning itching on both palms and once on the sole of a foot. It's driving me insane because it burns like crazy and nothing seems to help. I forgot to ask the RE about it this morning, so tonight I turned to Dr. Google, thinking I would find a bunch of reassuring "this is totally normal and nothing to worry about" posts. But what I actually found is that severe burning itching of the palms and soles of the feet is the main symptom of ICP (Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy), which is a pretty rare pregnancy-related liver condition. Usually it is seen in the third trimester, but there is some evidence that it's tied to high progesterone, and mine has been super high even after being tapered off of progesterone supplements.
Has anyone had ICP? Does anyone know of anything else that causes this particular type of itching? I couldn't find anything reassuring online. TIA!

I've heard it mentioned on the boards over the years, but I don't recall anyone who has been diagnosed with it. Sorry I can't help ETA: I feel like a blood test was used to diagnose it, maybe?

Yeah, I'm probably going to call the RE on Monday and ask for the blood tests as a precaution, I'm just worried I'm being paranoid.

No experience other than having heard of it sorry. I’d definitely raise it with your dr to be safe, it’s certainly not something that’s super common and you’re not overreacting. Better to check it out.

I don't go here, but I've had ICP twice and know of a handful of others from my BMBs who have had it as well. Definitely talk to your doctor about the itching. The itching you described is pretty much textbook for ICP, so in my opinion you are not at all being paranoid for wanting to get tested for it. I truly hope you don't (and won't) have ICP, but if you have it, diagnosis and the right treatment plan are so important. I'm assuming you've already found it during your Google search, but if not, www.icpcare.org is a wonderful resource, as is their Facebook group. So sorry you're dealing with this. ❤️ Thanks so much for the info! So sorry you've dealt with ICP before. And I did find that website, it was very useful, I'll look into more of what they have.

How are you feeling, daisy818 ? Still itchy? It comes and goes. I called the doctor today and they drew some blood this afternoon to check on things. I was really glad that when I told them the symptoms they immediately suggested just running the liver function and serum bile acid tests - they at least seem to be familiar with this!

Hey! Yes, I've had ICP with all three of my pregnancies, most recently with my November turned October 2017 DD2.
Good for you for mentioning it to your doctor right away and good for them for taking you seriously! Your symptoms seem to be on track with what I and most ICP moms have experienced, but I'll still keep my fingers crossed that you won't become a member of this kind of shitty club.

Update! All my blood work came back normal, so she's just going to keep an eye on me and wanted me to try to reduce my salt intake to see if that helps with the itching; if the itching doesn't go away she'll re-test when I'm further along. Thanks to everyone who shared info with me about ICP!!

Glad everything came back normal daisy818 but sorry this is still a mystery. Hoping it resolves fast and can be classified as another weird pregnancy thing

I guess that's good news! Hope it resolves itself quickly. Pregnancy is weird.
