DiFi: Why didn't Google revoke RT's preferred status when it was determined to be Kremlin propaganda?
Walker: Google has been working on cyberespionage for years. We recognize the concerns about RT and it's "slanted coverage." RT is everywhere. We have carefully reviewed their content, but they do not violate our terms of use. Google provides information about the "government-funded nature of RT" and are working to expand that to YouTube and other platforms.
DiFi: Yeah, that's...not remotely good enough. You all need to take a hard look at the role you play in cyber warfare.

The British Parliament's similar committee determined that Facebook and Twitter failed to remove content from radical Jihadist and neo-Nazi accounts even after users have reported them. DiFi is introducing legislation to force their hand.

Senator Rubio: has facebook developed software to suppress posts from appearing in people's newsfeeds in specific geographic areas?
Stretch: We implement those tools in countries where specific content might violate the laws of that country. For example, Holocaust denial material would be blocked from appearing in Germany, where such material violates the law.
Rubio is trying to accuse them of using geoblocking tools to block criticism of the government in China...but Facebook is blocked in China so I'm not sure what Rubio is trying to do here.

Rubio: Is a foreign influence campaign a violation of the Terms of Service of any of your companies?
::deafening silence::
Twitter does not have state-sponsored manipulation as a part of any of their rules (um, wut?)
Rubio: You can buy a bot army for $100. If you can prove that someone bought a bot army, would that violate your TOS?
Twitter would block them because they were bots. But what about trolls?
Facebook doesn't allow bots either.
ASK THEM ABOUT TROLLS, MARCO

Rubio is asking whether the SM companies have evidence of the Russians uploading voter data and using it to target users on SM. Now, how on earth would they have that information, son?

Registered voter information to SM?
What is Rubio getting at. Was voter info hacked and uploaded? (SM Companies are denying)

Senator Wyden: The abuses that are taking place are beyond the reach of government in a free society. Corporate responsibility is the only thing that can protect SM users from these abuses. And you've failed.

Senator Collins: It's not as simple as just identifying fake information or accounts. The Russians are exploiting the existing divisions in our country and undermining confidence in our institutions.

Props to Susan Collins for making the "both sides' argument in a way that makes sense and matters outside the realm of defending Trump.
She points out that, IN ADDITION TO working to ensure the election of Trump, Russians were playing both sides of divisive arguments to sow discord and chaos among Americans of every political affiliation.

Heinrich: Russia employed at least 90 people and spent over 2 million dollars interfering in the 2016 US presidential election. What are you doing across the globe, for example, in Catalonia, to prevent Russian interference in Western Democracies?
Stretch: This is a global effort. We focus on elections worldwide as they appear on the calendar, and we comply with all applicable local law.

Twitter has no requirement that accounts be linked to a physical identity. They feel it's important to maintain this position to protect social dissidents in fascist countries and embedded journalists. That's an interesting angle.

Twitter's plan to address this is to give users the option to click on an ad, click through to another page that would allow you to see who paid for the ad, how much they spent, and all other ads paid for by the same entity. I think that's assuming a whole lot of curiosity and responsibility on the part of the Twitter user. And, let's be real, advertising is an entire industry predicated on provoking immediate, visceral reactions. So that's not really going to work.

Senator Blunt: How do you know the IRA were in Russia?
Edgett: we look for any way to link an account to Russia, via IP, email address, mobile carrier and towers, banks, etc.
Blunt: So when you say "The Russians," you mean that you determined that the IRA logged into TWitter from Russia?
Edgett: We're pretty confident the Russians did it, yeah.
What is Roy doing?

I think Blunt is trying to say that we should be mollified by the fact that Russia's monetary expenditure on election-related ads is dwarfed by the amounts spent by the Trump and Clinton campaigns. That's...not how it works?

Now he's trying to say that we shouldn't care that they spammed voters in key swing states with disinformation bc they also did it in Baltimore which went for Clinton by like 26 points. Meanwhile, THEY WERE CALLING BLM TERRORISTS. Does Senator Blunt not think this is important??!?!?!!

Ah, I see Senator King follows Clint Watts on Twitter, haha. He clearly is tuned into the Hamilton68 dashboard (or his staff are). Now he's showing a giant board of hashtags that Russian bots and trolls have amplified to keep us squabbling about TakeAKnee
ETA: Although he stops short of calling out the biggest Russian troll of all, who perpetuates this fight on a near daily basis: The President
