Talk to me about reflux. If your lo has it what do you do foe it? We thought j had it early on but it seemed to go away mostly. The last 4 days he is spitting up 4 and 5 times after every feeding and has vomited multiple tumes. The doctor said put oatmeal in his bottle but I'm worried about it. They also said zantac but want me to truths oatmeal fiest. J will be 10 weeks on Friday. Thoguhts?

N has it. He has spit up after every feeding, sometimes two hours after he last ate. We do all the reflux precautions- paced feeds, sitting at 30*, holding up after feeds for 30+ min, etc. It doesn’t help.
There are two kinds of reflux kids- Happy spitter-uppers and non thriving spitters. Non thriving are the worriers because they’re not gaining weight from all their spit ups. Happy ones don’t seem to let it bother them.
N is clearly doing well in the weight gain department, so the dr wasn’t particularly worried about him, but he started showing signs of being bothered by the reflux- extreme crying right before or after spitting up, arching his back when he spit up- which meant the acidity was bothering him. So we put him on Zantac twice a day and for the most part he seems to not notice or care that he is constantly spitting up. Sometimes it’ll bother him, if it’s a huge spit up, or close to his med time so I think the effects have worn off, but not much I can do.
Reminder though- the meds are to treat the symptoms and so it doesn’t bother them, not to fix the reflux, unfortunately. Maybe rice cereal would help decrease the spitups. Anecdotally, a friend did it with her kid and she says he just started spitting up chunks instead of just liquid! Who knows.

Good to know about the meds. Yeah J is a happy spitter upper but he does scream while eating sometimes which I hate.

E has silent reflux. She is on zantac for it and is doing much better. She was gaining fine in the weight department but was clearly uncomfortable, esp at night.
D is a spitter upper but isn't on meds because he is obviously gaining tons of weight and seems happy all the time.

Oliver has reflux. We started using zantac because it was making him very uncomfortable. The red flags for him was that he would arch his back while feeding and he would regurgitate milk often. He would then either start screaming or fussing. I personally wouldn't go to formula thickening if he is gaining weight well. I was under the impression that was an old practice.

addymac has N gained a significant amount of weight since starting zantac? Oliver gained almost 4 lbs between his 2 month and 4 month appointments and they upped his dose from .9 to 1.4 which equals about .1ml per lb. I noticed that in the week or so before upping the dose the effects had begun to wear off about 2 hours before he was due for his next dose.

Can't hurt and my dr said it's completely expected to have to increase dose.

I don’t think R has reflux, but she has been spitting up today and been more fussy when eating. Sometimes she seems to go through phases where she spits up more.

I asked my ped about reflux because M spits up a lot and also coughs sometimes after eating. He said it's pretty common in young babies and that they grow out of it as they're digestive system matures and the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus strengthens. M doesn't seem too bothered and is gaining ok so he wasn't concerned. If she starts to be upset by it I would ask for Zantac. I personally would not go the oatmeal route this young.

We actually just had to up H's dose from .6 to .8ml 3x a day. He was doing well, but lately has been showing symptoms again.

happyfeet9, nutmeg cali @starzia cwbh928 Do your babies sleep flat on their backs? Or do you have them sleeping on an incline somewhere other than their crib/pnp? Or with a wedge pillow under their mattress? Do you hold them upright / inclined after their motn feeds?

addymac I do hold E upright for 15-20 minutes after most feedings. She usually seems alright and will lay down flat on her back comfortably, either in crib or PnP. During the day if she is fussy, I will have her nap on the twin z pillow, so I can watch her. It allows her to be on a slight incline. She usually STTN but on the occasion she doesn't, she'll go back in her crib.

When I transition him to the crib I will probably use the crib wedge. I will try without it first though. For motn feeds I usually just feed and lay him back down. I do feed him on an incline which kills my back. He does nap in his rnp, but I think he is getting to big for it.

king26 I'm late but A has bad reflux. Zantac did nothing. Don't put oatmeal in the bottle! That is an old school solution. He could choke and his digestive system is too little. A is on prilosec. She still spits up a ton but it doesn't hurt. She would writhe and arch her back, screaming before and after spitting up, spit up 30 times a day. Sometimes projectile vomit. We took her to a ped GI. Ask fot a referal because the ped is limited ay only prescribing zantac. addymac I have a pillow under her mattress to elevate her head and keep her upright 10 mins after eating

Also other symptoms include grunting, snoring, coughing, excessive hiccups
4 months is when reflux peaks and we had to increase her dosage

N hiccups all th time! I didn’t realize that was a symptom of reflux, too. Ooof. I just bought a wedge for his crib. We will see. And I’ll monitor his symptoms to see if they increase closer to four months. Sigh.

Or with a wedge pillow under their mattress? Do you hold them upright / inclined after their motn feeds? She sleeps flat on her back. During the week she sleeps in a co-sleeper in bed with me. On weekends when MH is home at night, she sleeps in the rnp. After she eats I keep her upright for at least 15 minutes and if I do lay her down within a half hour after she eats I'll put a wedge pillow under her co-sleeper, mainly because she will tend to spit up if flat on her back too soon after eating.

Yeah I just calculated that we should be giving him double what we started off giving him 😒😑 increasing the dose today! Oops
His pedi is so chill with us bc she knows I’m a nurse and DH is a Dr but I wish she had given us more specific directions on when to increase the dose. She just said To increase by 1ml if it didn’t seem to be working but nothing about weight. I had no idea it was weight based. I just told DH this morning about possibly increasing the dose and he was like oh yeah it definitely should be increased based on his weight. What! 😑 😏

Yeah I’m surprised the oatmeal in a bottle was suggested by a pedi, that seems side eye worthy.
