When do you take your kid in to get checked for one? M barely ever got them, but C has had two so far. This latest one resulted in a ruptured ear drum (which we found out about after seeing blood in C’s bed this morning). But there was no indication of an infection before this. She had a cold and was cranky, but had no fever. I don’t want this to happen again, but I also don’t want to take her in every time she is cranky with a cold. What symptoms have you bringing your kid to the pedi?

When DS has had an ear infection he pulled and pointed at his ear. Do you think she could have mild allergies? DS has mild allergies that are symptomatic especially when it has been wet/rainy. The extra congestion leads to ear infections. We give daily Claritin now to prevent.

I dunno. I had the same problem - H never got an ear infection until M was born, and she had 3+ her first full winter. It sucked. I took her in a lot.
I was tempted to buy an ear light thing, and have my nurse friend (remember mooncharm?!) teach me how to use it. Hah. Just as a first precaution.

The thing they use at the doctor's office. With the magnifying thing.

An adult friend of mine who is a baby doula and has raised 5 kids told me she did buy one of those ear things and had the dr. Teach her what to look for. She said once she knew what she was looking for she could always tell.

Before tubes, I took them in when they were extra cranky with a cold, but it was summer. We've had a lot of ear infections over here.

When C had her first one we only caught it because she was at her regularly scheduled appointment. Then DC did say she had been rubbing her ear. My other kids do that when they are tired though, so it isn't as good of an indicator. My mom had an otoscope when I was a kid because there were so many ear infections. Our pedi always takes possible ear infections really seriously, we just took C in for that yesterday. If she had had the fever minus the ear pain though, they would make us suffer a week before seeing her. 🙄

Every time Nugget has had an ear infection she was cranky and clingy and spiked a fever. She never touches her ears.

If it's going to be a problem I recommend getting an otoscope (aka the ear light thingy) and having the doc teach you. It's not hard. I used to have to do it for my dog. lol. So I'm equipped for the kids.

I want my own otoscope now. Never thought I’d say that.
