byjoveWomen's rights (more along the lines of fair pay, etc, equality with men in that aspect) Mental health - i really feel passionate about this bc I think the lack of care in this aspect is just ridiculous Healthcare in a general sense- i have a child with epilepsy, so I worry that if we ever lose coverage, he may be considered as pre-existing condition I tend not to follow politics because it makes me sick, but these things are issues i do worry about.

Mr. Gillespie is unlikely to expand Medicaid in VA, which will negatively impact low-income families and their access to healthcare. Gillespie also supports GOP efforts to remove essential health benefits from the Affordable Care Act, which would drastically decrease coverage and increase premiums for people with preexisting conditions (like Epilepsy. Your family could be priced out of having insurance entirely). It will also, inevitably, make access to mental health care in the Commonwealth even worse. Also remember that Dr Northam is a veteran and a neurologist, so he deeply understands the importance of access to quality, affordable mental healthcare.

late to the party here, but I have to say I'm not decided either way - it seems everyone here is voting for Northam. Can you tell me why? Without going into why he's better than the other candidate. I want to know the real reasons (not that he's better than Gillespie, bc G did xyz or whatever). I'm undecided in how to vote tomorrow. We are a military family and have been in Virginia, Georgia and DC. Virginia is the only one that did not have free public prek. I didn’t even know free prek was a thing until we moved. It’s free in Georgia for 4 year olds and in dc for 3 and 4 year olds. Research shows that prek is important. Northam wants to expand early chlildhood education. Also, Gillespie wants to give more money to charter schools. Poor students, students of color and special education students will be negatively affected by this because charter schools don’t have to provide a free education to all. If you research charter schools and the above groups of children I have listed, you can see that those children are expelled at a crazy rate. I know students who have been expelled because they couldn’t afford uniforms.

yianna thank you for coming here and asking for help. My concern is that many people vote without knowing where the candidates are on the issues or simply don't vote at all.

Also hi guys. I miss you all. Life has been crazy in prek and I’m there until December but wanted to stop in to this thread. I’m so nervous.
I voted two saturdays ago though. I posted my I voted picture on fb :-)

Also, I'm not sure if your child is school age, but the law under IDEA requires that his or her school meets any educational needs that could arise as a result of Epilepsy under section 504. President Trump's Secretary of Education wants to dismantle the rights and protections of students with special needs or medical conditions, and Ed Gillespie is in lock step with her on education

This is so important. 504 plans are legal documents that schools have to follow. Without them, many students who don’t fall under the special education umbrella will not get appropriate classroom accommodations. It’s so scary to think about.

I took the day off today because I fucked up my back and saw a Northam tent on the side of the road in Alexandria. I have no idea why it was there but I beeped my horn a ton anyway.
I keep thinking about the people who were early voting at the same time as me and wondering who they were voting for.

Having a child who is spectrum that has gone through K-12 on an IEP/504 I wholeheartedly agree. Without having an IEP, he would have had a much harder time in school.

Luckily I had a mom tell me to fight for the IEP, as her kid’s 504 barely helped!

Ladies, I am barely keeping my head out of water with fussy teething baby plus the four year old out of school for 5 days straight, but I am freaking out more than a little about this election.
Also, speaking of IEPs, we have DS’s annual meeting tomorrow morning. I think we’ll all head over to vote as a family afterward.

I am voting for Northam because I agree with his stances on: Women’s health care - he supports low cost/free access to birth control and opposes mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds to access abortions (unlike Gillespie) Gun control - Northam supports common sense gun control to keep us all safer from gun violence and gun accidents Medicaid expansion to folks who currently don’t qualify, but make too little to afford private plans Early childhood education - my child has been lucky to receive public preschool services in VA because he has an iep. I would like to see the public preschool program expanded to serve all kids.
I also think that Dr. Northam has a great background for making good governing decisions as a pediatrician and veteran with experience as lieutenant governor. I really admire him as a person.

I generally don’t like to share my political views anymore (I was very politically involved in my college days but have backed away in the last 5 years or so). I used to be a republican, but in the age of trump I can’t align myself with the party anymore.
I’m voting for Northam tomorrow because the preK issue is big for me, and because I can’t handle anymore gun violence.

I was voter #55 at my polling station at 6:30, and the room was filling up. By comparison, I was #140something at 1:30 for the school board election. One of my coworkers just told me she heard on the radio some stations had lines of people waiting before 7 a.m. My dad is always voter #1 at his precinct because he works early and he said there were 30-40 people there already at 6am when he voted.
