I guess I have an unpopular opinion in that I don't like the name calling, even though I despise him. I've been thinking about this since I saw Brene Brown speak a few weeks ago, and this quote (from Braving the Wilderness) in particular. I'm not sure stooping to that level makes us any better than the rest of them. Whoa. This went from zero to genocide right quick. I've never called Trump turnip because I don't get it but I don't think doing so is dehumanizing him in an effort to strip him of his human rights.

@blanche, I agree. Iām not perfect at it, but I agree. Especially since I have to teach a small human these lessons daily.
I was deeply offended that President Obama was always referred to as simply Obama. It felt very disrespectful to me. I believe it was in part because of his race.
I need to be better about not calling POTUS just Trump. I mostly use POTUS but I sometimes slip. President Trump is still hard to say.

Whoa. This went from zero to genocide right quick. I've never called Trump turnip because I don't get it but I don't think doing so is dehumanizing him in an effort to strip him of his human rights. My point is, name calling and churlish insults might make us feel better in the short-term, but they don't do any good really. I agree that they don't do any good. As bad as this sounds, there are times when I'm not trying to be productive. I'm just venting and angry. Sometimes I need to call an asshole an asshole. I think that quote was really heavy handed.

I think it's fair to call him a buffoon or a narcissist or an idiot or a pig (like chauvinist pig not like disgusting animal based on appearances) or an asshat or whatever because that's what he is.
I don't call everyone who I disagree with those things. But I'm not going to not name him for what he is because he wildly slings insults at anyone who threatens him. I'm not basing what I call him on the fact that he's a man. Or a Republican. Or white. Or straight. Or wealthy. It's very much based on his own actions.
You act like an asshole; you get called an asshole.

But I will say all the "not saying his name" things are relatively pointless IMO.

A federal judge just blocked the latest version of the travel ban. Ha! This brings me great pleasure. Isn't this the third attempt?

I didnāt like Cheeto because his fake tan is not even close to the worst thing about him. And itās based on looks and all that. I donāt get turnip or know where it came from.
But I do agree with rocks. You act like a chauvinist pig, or an asshole who is letting the people of PR suffer while you shout āfake newsā? I will call you an asshole. I do think there is a line between calling someone out for what they areā because god forbid we normalize this shitā and making baseless low blows. But I do also understand that for a lot of posters, this forum is an outlet because IRL at work or with their families they feel they have to show restraint and stay polite or keep their composure.
So basically... Idk.

I dont type his name because I dont want his mentions upped and typing a . in the middle of his name makes my phone ac. When I'm talking about the office I will use POTUS. I understand the reasoning and agree to an extent but he himself he is less than empathetic to any one except himself. I get it, its petty but until he behaves with dignity deserving of the office I just cant. Even with W, I didnt name call. He still comported himself at most times presidential. Respect is earned and all that.

Yes I'm sure those motivating factors are remarkably different from the reasons those of us with insurance have for leading healthy lifestyles. ššš

@rocksforludo ,I'm phone banking for Northam again tonight and I'm basically just going to read a transcript of today's press conference and be like, "Do you like this idiot? No? Then vote for Northam." I was planning to do this phone bank tonight but my husband broke his stupid ankle. š” there's another one next week if you can make it

And the Gillespie adds have been painting Northam as a tax raising monster who will steal your guns and give them to gang members. @rocksforludo Yeah. I like that Northam has more or less taken the high road, but I'm not sure how well his soft-spoken Army-veteran, doctor ads are going over in response to those. I really need to get TF over my social anxiety (Snap out of it, self.) and do some phone banking. Or canvassing. Or something. It's so difficult, like literally almost paralyzing for me to go out into the wild and talk to people unprompted. I signed up with a group that said they were coordinating texting efforts for him, but it's been radio silence from them. Love tit for support -- I'm nervous about it too. The reason I was feeling brave about this phone banking is I would have been calling likely Democrat voters, so probably no one would be overtly mean.

But criticizing him for his choices and actions? it's not dignified, no, but it is a survival mechanism.

Between Meadows saying that Alexander-Murray is a "good start" and Cassidy saying this, I'm allowing myself to feel a little hopeful about this. Plus the breakdown of what's actually in it is sounding not terrible.

I agreed with the points made in the quote, to an extent, but I haven't seen anyone up in here calling KellyAnne the C word or calling Trump a literal pig. IMO running with an autocorrect is less of a direct insult than it is an inside joke.

oh lol I'm a nervous basketcase about the phonebanking. But if Gillespie wins, and I didn't do everything I could to help Northam, I'll be in November 2016 mode all over again and i Just can't do it

@blanche, I agree. Iām not perfect at it, but I agree. Especially since I have to teach a small human these lessons daily. I need to be better about not calling POTUS just Trump. I mostly use POTUS but I sometimes slip. President Trump is still hard to say. I'm respectfully disagreeing that using only someone's last name is always disrespectful. I will certainly agree with you that there are probably many MANY people who refused to say "President Obama" and if they did it out of lack of respect then it's wrong. I have called him simply Obama. I mean no disrespect in doing so. In discussing past presidents I typically refer to them by their last name alone, using Bush 41 and George W to differentiate between the two. I usually say "Bill Clinton" instead of just Clinton because I need to differentiate from Hillary. I also understand where you are coming from about "President Trump" being hard to say. I agree, it absolutely is. But just wanted to say I don't think last names only are always disrespectful.

I disagree about referring to Obama or Trump by their last names. I feel that has always been done, at least throughout my life. I know I referred to both Bushes as Bush and Clinton (Bill) as Clinton. I think this is common and doesn't automatically display disrespect. As for calling people Lord Damp Nut or Obummer, etc. ... well, you may have a point.

I have always said āPresident (name)ā so I have a different opinion. Also I felt like it was more commonplace than previous presidents in my lifetime to simply say his last name. It also still kills me that people say āObamacareā because they are saying it in a negative way. Itās the ACA to me.
Iām sure Iām extra on this, but itās just my thing.
