dc2london , do you listen to Preet's podcast? Today's episode with Ben Wittes is SO good, not least because of the trash talk about how Wittes would kick Putin's ass. I just started listening to him yesterday. I've only listened to the first episode where he talks about his firing. Should I listen to all of the back eps or should I just go with current? Just listen to them all

One of my idiot coworkers - who gets his "news" from the Drudge Report and Fox News - is all giddy about "another new Hillary scandal". It's like he has no clue of anything actually going on. I mean I don't think he's a particularly bright man, but it's still shocking to me that people who can function on a day to day basis ACTUALLY buy into that nonsense. What kind of mental earmuffs are required?

What kind of mental earmuffs are required? The right is starting to push the narrative that Obama/Hillary are involved in the *true* Russia scandal. link Guess they've started to realize the Russia investigations aren't going away, so they're trying to lay out their alternative facts in hopes they'll catch on.

I hope this kinda puts to bed the “where is Kelly” comments and discussions. Kelly is all in.

I will preface this with saying I didn’t listen to General Kelly.
However, if Trump just didn’t use the correct tone or say the words as they sounded in his head, which very well be the case here, the deplorable part is the digging in on Twitter and calling the Rep a liar (and basically implying the family lied too). And also lying about “proof”. And also the whole time knowing the name of his widow and family.
Here is the way it should have gone:
POTUS makes call, handles it in a way that he thinks is good.
Family and congress person say “hey, we didn’t feel good about that. He said xyz”
American people: ........ WTF
POTUS: oh god, no. I meant xyz. I’m sorry.
End scene.

@juliagulia, I only lurk this thread, so sorry for just jumping in, but that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. When Kelly was speaking and saying how his son *knew what he signed up for*. Not in those exact words, but just the general SENTIMENT that he was proud to serve, surrounded by good people, and knew it was risky but did it anyway, I teared up. I’m sure it was not how Trump came across with his similar sentiment, or what I hope he meant to say, but with really poor delivery.
I agree with everything you said about how it should have been handled after the fact. Just apologize. This is a grieving war widow. Say sorry, don’t dig your heels in.

It’s interesting to hear the opinions of people closer to the military than me. I hate to defend him, but I could see the mix up of words. But what followed was inexcusable.

I’ve always been a military wife. EX was military and now my current husband is military. If either ever died in action I would hate hearing the words he said to the widow (Especially with the poor delivery). But I like to think, the sentiment, was something I would like to hear (more like Kelly). Something like “He was brave. He knew the risks and still made the decision to fulfill the job and to honor his country. He is a true hero. His heroic actions will never be forgotten.” Basically, Trump, think before you speak. Or at least apologize when you get it wrong. (Which won’t happen....and makes me so mad).

I know everyone in the military has different opinions but as a spouse, I'd be fucking pissed if someone said that's what they signed up for. Or whatever.
People say that shit to me all of the time when my husband is deployed and I'm having a rough day. It doesn't make anything any better.

This was from my “on this day” on FB and I feel...helpless? I mean, FUUUUCK
“Mom, on November 8th, I will hold you in my heart. When our first female president is elected, I will share that victory with you. You were a woman that broke down walls by being among the first women to go to Columbia University. You taught me what it meant to be a woman, a feminist, and a caring and considerate member of society. You taught me that we should take care of our own. You would be so proud. I just wish you were here to share with me and vote with me. I love you.”

I caught clips of today's presser on the evening news and now I'm mad again. Here's what should have happened.
A) Trump listens to General Kelly and stays out of it entirely.
Failing that,
(B) After Representative Wilson's statement, the White House goes into damage control mode. -Trump DOESN'T tweet calling Ms. Wilson and the mother of Sgt Johnson liars, claiming they made it up or that he has proof. -Sarah releases a statement explaining that the president *actually* meant to highlight the bravery of Sgt Johnson's service, NOT to minimize the sacrifice he and his family made -POTUS releases a statement expressing his regret that he wasn't more clear and for any additional pain he caused Myeshiah Johnson or her mother in law. -POTUS makes another phone call to Mrs. Johnson, AND to Sgt Johnson's mother, during which he reads a carefully crafted brief couple of sentences, prepared for him by General Kelly, apologizing for any additional grief he may have caused them and thanking them for their family's service -and for the love of god, someone on his staff needs to make sure he actually knows the names of deceased and his immediate family members before he talks about them on camera

Watching Rachel Maddow connect the dots of Trump's Muslim travel ban on Chad to Chad's troops pulling out of Niger days later and then 4 Green Berets were killed is chilling.
And it's possibly all due to a paperwork mishap. The incompetence of this administration is always astounding, but this is... I don't really have the words.

So Pompeo is saying Russia did not affect the outcome and all intelligence agencies agree with that, but other intelligence officials are saying that they don't agree. Is that the gist? ETA: Saying that they disagree with his assessment at this time because further investigation is needed, right?

The IC writ large have determined that Russia affected the outcome of the election but Pompeo is saying they meddled but it didn't work
