Start in the closets -
Pack your off season clothes, coats, etc that still fit.
For kids - it has to fit. If it doesn't fit DO NOT PACK!
If you love it, pack it.
Think of it like this - am I willing to pay someone to move this?
Back any extra blankets, comforters, sheets, etc.
Move on to kitchen -
Pack serving dishes, etc. Things you don't use day to day.
If you want to take it a step further you can pack your plates etc now and you paper in the meantime.
If you are very close to the move and you know your ass isn't going to be cooking, pack those pots, pans, crock pots, etc.
Decorative stuff -
Pics and stuff off wall. If you can box, do. If they are big, you can wrap them with a blanket or comforter.
I use blankets and comforters to wrap the TVs.
You want to have a first night bin or box. Paper plates, cups, towels for first night showers, chargers, laptop, basic cleaning supplies. Things they feel they want immediately the first night - blankies, lovies, etc.
Pack an overnight back for the shit you will need immediately that you don't want to lose like contact solutions, hair stuff, glasses, birth control pills, etc.
You can wrap breakable items in clothing. This saves on cost and then you won't have bubble wrap or paper to throw away at the new spot.
You can pack glasses and stuff with socks.
Labels your boxes to which room and what's in there if you can.
If you can, go to the new place before hand and clean the kitchen and bathrooms.
Keep sandwich bags for shit like screws and parts to things. Label them with sharpie.
Don't make boxes heavy. If you have books in there even them out with stuff animals or clothes at the top.
You can take a pic with your cell of eletronic hook ups.
Tape drawers shut so you don't have to empty them. You can wrap these with plastic wrap too.
Don't take your shit off the hangers, just put a trash bag on the bottom half. It is not cute but makes for record time unpacking. Just hang those bitches and pull the bag off.
If you are renting, takes pics or video of the place and how you left it.
