A coworker of mine's son has fluid in his ears and will require tubes. Can anyone tell me what the recovery process is like and what the whole surgery day is like? My coworker is freaking out and I want to be able to tell him what to expect. Thanks!

The surgery takes less than 15 min. I've been told it's difficult for some to come our of anesthesia but some kids don't have a problem at all. They'll probably be tired the rest of the day and they can go back to school/resume normal activity the next day.
I'm sure it depends on the location but the packet I was given says we need to arrive an hour before our scheduled time. No food after midnight.

H's tubes are scheduled for next Tuesday. I can live blog it to you via text if she wants.

This is our experience: We arrived at the hospital an hour prior to “surgery” time. They checked her in, checked her vitals, etc. I went back to the surgical room with her and was able to stay while they put her under. I was out of the room for maybe 10 minutes when they came back with her. She was super duper crabby/cranky. Pretty much inconsolable. She fell asleep on the drive home and slept for a while at home. After she woke up she was back to normal, happy as can be. We had to do drops in her ears 2x a day for like a week. She hated the drops but it was fine.

I don’t know if this will make her feel better but it’s not really surgery, they just sedate the kiddo so they stay still for the procedure. If you had to have tubes placed as an adult I’m pretty sure they would just do it in office.

But whomever it was said they just did it in the office.

So for Chase, we had to bring him to the surgical center for 6am maybe? They schedule the youngest kiddos first since they can't eat beforehand. There was paperwork and a short weight, then they took all of us back together to weigh him, put on his bracelet, etc.
From the time they took him into the OR to the time we met him in recovery, it was maybe 10-15 minutes? They are put under via a mask, so it's a super quick wake-up once the tubes are in. But at least with an 11 month old, they wake up ANGRY. Chase was a beast, screaming and thrashing around. I brought a bottle, which calmed him temporarily, and I nursed him since he started screaming AGAIN as soon as the bottle was empty. He was still screaming when we put him in the car but he passed out shortly after. Once he woke up from his nap, he was totally normal.
Depending how bad the ears are, you'll be told to put drops in a few times a day for anywhere from 3 to 10 days. Chase was 10 days because his ears were a damn mess. He HATED the drops and would scream like a banshee each time BUT at least we're not pumping him with antibiotics. Anyhow it took a night or 2 before he slept through and he's had another EI or 2 since, but they haven't been nearly as bad. His tubes are both still in, 7 months later.
Anything I'm missing?

Quick surgery, and zero recovery time here. Plus, no known ear infections since then. Best surgery ever!

I will say I have an acquaintance whose daughter just had tubes a couple weeks ago. I forewarned her what N13 had mentioned about it being difficult for them to come out of anesthesia. When I saw her 2 days later she said her daughter had no problem and was happily playing with the nurse when they went back there. But several of the other kids around her were upset.

Her child is a unicorn. Chase is a wildebeest.

Perfect timing... We just got a referral to an ENT. N is on #7 in less than 11 months😩. Internet stalking her recommendations, but hard to pass up the 2 she recommended at the building next to my office.

Tubes are the best thing that's ever happened to us.
We had to get there super early with Dude, 5 am IIRC.
We kept him in Jammies and brought his lovey so he'd be comfortable and have a security item. Juice in a sippy and milk in a bottle for the ride home.
We waited about an hour before they stated the procedure and once they called him back, before you know it, they were done.
Dude lost it when he woke up. It was distressing, honestly. My dad is a pretty big guy and he had trouble holding him he was thrashing around like an alligator. But as soon as he saw our car he settled down I guess because it was familiar?
So that was maybe only 10 minutes of a difficult time.
He fell asleep on the ride home and slept for about 2 hours. By the time he woke up, he was 100%. Went to school the very next day. We didn't want to push it but honestly he could have gone back to Daycare that same day he was so unfazed.
Only 1 ear infection since and it's been 3 years.
I'm all about getting them for X if they're necessary.

I went between work and happy hour. There is no recovery aside from the anesthesia for the kids.

Thanks everyone. My coworker's son doesn't have EI's but has fluid in his ear. They've gotten second opinions and tubes were recommended. I couldn't remember if fluid was flamingo's B's issue as well.

Thanks everyone. My coworker's son doesn't have EI's but has fluid in his ear. They've gotten second opinions and tubes were recommended. I couldn't remember if fluid was flamingo 's B's issue as well. Yep. B never had an ear infection, oddly enough, but basically that fluid was just sitting in his ear canals and the ENT said it was the consistency of glue. Everyone else has given good synopses; it was a very easy procedure and we were home by 9 am. B also had his tongue tie clipped at the same time and he was out of our sight for max 15 min (from the time they wheeled him back to the time they carried him back in). B didn’t get physical or anything coming out from under anesthesia, he was just very teary. He cried for a good 10 minutes (he was 18 mo old, for reference). Part of that may have been pain from the tongue-tie, though. It’s tough seeing your child out of it from the anesthesia but it's over so, so quick. Sorry for the late response, busy day.
