Hi! I'm getting excited for Halloween and was wondering what scary movies you like.
I think the 80's were the best time for scary movies.
My favorites are Friday the 13th Nightmare on Elm Street
I also love the Scream movies, Trick or Treat, and not really scary but the Madea Boo movie.

I haven't been able to watch a truly scary movie since The Ring/The Grudge. That was the turning point for me!
So I'll stick with my old school B horror movies like Killer Klowns from Outer Space Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Or older ones like The Others Lady in White
Although I'm tempted by Cabin in the Woods... I've heard it's different than most horror movies.

I'll preface this with saying I do not like to be scared so haven't seen too many scary movies made within the last decade.
My favorites would probably be Psycho, Scream, I Know What you Did Last Summer - basically because they are scary but not super scary and I could watch them again. I thought Texas Chainsaw Massacre was super scary and I won't watch that again.
I try to watch Halloween every year but have yet to make it through the whole movie, mainly because my children interrupt me.

I say I like scary movies, but I'm not sure if it counts that I will only watch them at home with the lights on and a blanket readily available to cover my face.
I'll rewatch all of the hokey scary movies - Halloween, Scream, I Know What you Did Last Summer, Jaws - over and over again. And I'll mostly agree to watching newer ones that MH wants to see, with the caveat listed above.
The Descent was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen and I will never go spelunking ever in my entire life because of that. (But also, LOL, I would never do that for starters. I don't even like going in the "cave" at the zoo to see the snakes & bats.)

The conjuring Insidious 28 days later Rob zombie's Halloween remake. So good. So brutal.
Those are films that have seriously stuck with me.
I'm a huge bad horror fan so I usually watch the worst stuff I can find. Dracula 3000 is awfully hilarious. There's Nothing Out There is a great horror parody.

Since it's by Joss Whedon there is a twist at the end that plays out similar to a Buffy episode. Same degree of wittiness as well. I loved that movie.

Is this where I say that I thought Annabelle was incredibly boring and laughed whenever they showed the demon. Especially on the stairs and when he was hiding behind the doll. Lololol for days.

Definitely The Witch! And The Shining and The Others.
I liked Personal Shopper. It's not a horror movie but it's a bit scary/unsettling.
Rear Window is good.
The sixth sense is still one of my favorites. Also the mothman prophecies.

So shortly after watching the original of this DH's "step grandmother" (his brother's grandmother) died. They lived in the middle of nowhere. When we went up to the memorial we slept in a trailer on the property with my infant niece. Well, slept isn't the right word. I mostly laid in bed, positive the hill people were coming for us.

sheilathetank - I love Buffy. And that's what I'd heard. My boss at the time it came out had a son who had a lot to do with the movie (works for the production company) and he kept telling me I'd like it.

M Night Shyamalan had a new movie this year called Split. I thought it was great. Really? I have seen all his movies because I'm hoping for another one like the sixth sense. That and I hate myself. The visit had an interesting twist at the end and I didn't hate it. I did recently see that he is making a sequel to unbreakable. So that should be interesting.

But then it turned out that it James McAvoy who I thought was outstanding in Split.

I have not seen the witch. I read a synopsis and was very meh about it. I should probably just watch it though.

The Shining Army of Darkness (more comedy but whatever, it's classic) Rebecca Psycho
I know it's not usually included in scary/horror movie lists, but Event Horizon.

If you're looking for some good movies that aren't as mainstream Haunter and Housebound are both on Netflix and they both had interesting twists to them. I would call them horror light. I mean they have a few jump scares and are suspenseful at times, but overall they are just a great story wrapped in the horror genre.

billyhorrible yeeep, sounds about right. I’d have “slept” too. sheilathetank yes! I watch and hope they’re good but they fall flat. I find they start interesting and then you’re like “wtf” and have blue balls. Split was better than some of the others for me but not great at the end.

I have a whole separate list for scifi horror. Something about being in space, adds an entirely new level or suspense/horror. Sunshine and Infini are two that come to mind. Infini got shitty reviews but I thought it was pretty brutal and I loved the ending. Interesting concept too.

It could have been such a good movie. What we got was so bad. Laughably bad. In fact I should put it in my list of memorable bad movies.

Basically plants were responding to human environmental impact by releasing a chemical causing people to kill themselves. Which amounted to hilarious ways people tried to kill themselves including repeatedly bashing their head into a window.

The horror is show building and the religious dimension and the isolation of the family makes for an incredibly eerie sense of doom.

I forgot about a lot of these. The Skeleton Key was so good. Voodoo scares the heck out of me.
Pet Semetary was good.
Kind of cheesy but I liked the Urban Legend movie. (The first)
