Since I now have to buy all of the things for my new king bed, tell me about your favorites. I assume I will need 2-3 sets of sheets, bed skirt and a comforter. I'm thinking that I want a down comforter this time around, and possibly a duvet.

For sheets I only buy Bamboo sheets, and have 2 sets, they are super soft, durable and wash well. I prefer them to the crispness of 1000 thread cound sheets and Egyptian cotton. A close second would be sateen, but still prefer the bamboo.
Before you buy/order online your sheets measure the thickness of your mattress first, I think standard now is 18' and sheets will state what size they fit.
I prefer duvet and duvet cover to a comforter. Even though you can buy year round duvet's that are supposed to 'breathe' during the summer I take mine off during the hot months. Stay away from polyester, you'll be way too hot.
You can find duvet covers anywhere, I've had everything from high end to IKEA, it's more the look that sells me on the cover than the material. In saying that, I will never buy polyester, it doesn't breathe, and thats the last thing you want while sleeping.
Bedskirts you can get anywhere, again, not so much the material it's more the colour. When you get the bedskirt dont wash it, just put it in the dryer for 10-15 on medium to get some of the packing creases out, iron and put on your bed right away. If you wash it, you may not ever get the same crisp look as it came in the package..
You'll need King pillows as well, Costco has good ones usually.

The mattress pad was what was hard for us. The first ones we bought got destroyed after two washes. Like vino said you need to know the thickness because it varies by brand. I ended up just buying a random brand on amazon and it ended up being great.

I only do down comforters and duvets. The past couple of times I bought them at Bloomingdales, because I get them monogrammed. I replace them every couple of years. I just bought a new one at Restoration Hardware and I have been really happy.
As for sheets, I do white sheets always. I get them at Home Goods. I find they carry most of the same brands I buy at Bloomingdales for much, much cheaper.

Thanks for the tips. We got a pillow top so I know it's thicker than standard beds.

Yes, same company! I have bought sheets from them too.

My bedding formula is this: -sheets and a cotton blanket -solid colored quilt/matelassé coverlet -patterned duvet/cover folded at the foot of the bed.
We all have varying preferences for layers so with that combo everyone is happy, ha. I do Euro-sized pillows across our beds--our king takes 3. I put them in front of the sleeping pillows and then add a couple small decorative pillows.
My favorite brand of sheets (and I've tried many) is the Biltmore line from Belk. They come in varying depths depending on your mattress height. They're cut very generously so there's plenty to tuck in.
Bedskirts come in different lengths so measure your bed (from top of box spring to floor) before you buy.
Also, I learned this the hard way, but I (now) make sure there is a waterproof cover/pad/whatever on our bed to protect the mattress. B is up in our bed all the time to nap, watch TV, etc. and we've had leaky cups, diapers and accidents.
I love Pottery Barn and Ballard Designs for bedding.

I like down comforter and duvet cover route. I also have a quilt for extra warmth for the winter. We have pottery Barn that we registered for, but are due for replacement duvet since I noticed the white stripe part of duvet isn't as white as it should be😬

We have always gotten our bedding and towels from Macy's. I tend to think of Macy's as being overpriced though and I wait for sales/coupons.

@lizbinfl I love Ballard designs. I just wish I could afford it.
We just have sheets & a coverlet. It's too hot here for anything else.

I have some things from Macy's that we got from our wedding. The towels I got are pretty much destroyed but the bed set is nice, it's in the guest room (or will be when we have one). I also don't shop there without a coupon code.

flamingo can you show me a pic of your fully made bed. That sounds like a lot of blankets and I'm curious. I bet it looks very put together though.

I also agree w cher on white sheets. I just love to bleach the F out of my sheets/towels, so always go white. I made a small exception for one flannel sheet set that I really wanted for winter. I got them off Amazon and they appear to be Amazon's house brand - Pinzon by Amazon. I really love them, so soft and perfect for cold winters. Other than that, I have a duvet cover and insert. I got the duvet from PB, but forgot where I got the insert. I also have a couple throw pillows.
Our mattress pad was from Sam's. It is one of those gel types.

Definitely get a mattress cover. Ours fits like a fitted sheet and has a coating on the back that makes it water proof without the noise of plastic. And get two. When Jack was vomiting so much it never got on my mattress. But once it was dirty I was wishing I had another one while that one got washed.

I like Bloomingdale's for sheets. You can do pretty well during one of their sales events. I did buy a pair in Bed, Bath, and Beyond when we had a guestroom, and I was happy with them. After going the comforter or duvet route for so many years, we switched to a quilt (I don't think that's the right term because it's not patchwork, it's just white with it stitched in pattern). It's heavy without being too warm. I add a comforter on top in the winter months, but I don't keep it on the bed.

I'll have to see if I can dig one up from the real estate listings. Yes, it is probably OCD but we don't really use the duvet too much. DH only likes a sheet and light blanket, whereas I pull the quilt up. The duvet is nice in winter if it gets really cold (I realize 'really cold' is relative!) but too much for summer.

I don't have sheet recs, but the best thing I ever bought for our bed are these clips that go under the mattress and hold the sheets in place. I HATe when sheets get untucked and balled up -- makes me feel strangled.

Thanks vino, that first pic is exactly how ours looks (if you squint and ignore the dog hair, laundry, goldfish crumbs, etc.)
