So yesterday DD came home from school and hadn't eaten the ham in her lunch, when I asked her why she said she didn't have enough time to eat. Knowing my kid, I figured she was taking her sweet time eating so that was why she didn't get to finish. Fast forward to this morning, one of the mom's at drop off asked me if DD ever complains that she doesn't have enough time to eat her lunch. Then one of the other mom's chimed in and said her DD also says she doesn't have time. Now that it's more than just my kid saying that she doesn't have enough time, I am starting to question what is going on to not allow these kids enough time to eat. Is it that they just don't have enough time to eat because it's taking too long to get them down to the lunch room and their lunches opened, or is it the kids "fooling around"....
I am going to try to get some more information from DD tonight about what is going on. One of the other mom's is going to talk to the school secretary. I am thinking about talking right to the teacher, depending on the answers I get from DD.

What a day. I survived. I only had the kids from 8-15 to 11:30 & then pulled older kids out from 1-3 for one on one work (this preschool teacher is also an intervention specialist) but there were some instances where I seriously thought everyone was whispering behind my back. It's starting to piss me off but you know what, I'm still gonna take the damn jobs & show my face so eff everyone. It was also super weird being there with the monitor I work with. She was basically grilling me in the morning & when I told my DH about it on lunch break, he was really annoyed by it. I had overheard teacher's lounge talk from this one before complaining that they let the speech therapist cover a teacher before & she was like "don't subs need a certification"? so I had an inkling she was thinking they pulled something like that & let me slide. Like no, I am a legit. I have a master's degree thanks. It's not in teaching but guess what, it doesn't have to be so bye with all your questioning. Go get yourself a bachelor's degree & you can do the same thing. She was asking me too many damn things that rubbed me the wrong way. Just because I sub here as a monitor or whatever doesn't mean I'm an idiot. This is just a side gig to get some current job history on my freaking resume, thanks & to have the same schedule as my kid.

misspeansmama did they give you a daily schedule that tells you how long the lunch period is? Yup. 12:40-1:10, so they get 30 minutes. Now does that 30 minutes include the time it takes them to walk from the classroom down to the lunch room, I don't know.

The kids in my school and my sons school get 20 minutes for lunch misspeansmama. That means they have to get down to lunch, get settled, everything opened and cleaned up in that time (that's been my experience in the schools I've been in). DS is in 4th grade and is just now actually eating something for lunch. It wasn't unusual for me to see almost an entire lunch come home everyday. I gave him a good breakfast and big snack when he got home to hold him over to dinner. He also would rather talk than eat so I know part of this has been him and his personality.

NamasteBirches, I give you a lot of credit. All the situations you describe with what goes on towards you at that school would make me so uncomfortable I would probably quit. Hopefully, they aren't really talking about you.

Hopefully, they aren't really talking about you. I should have mentioned that teacher's lounge talk was when I was subbing as the secretary a couple of weeks ago but it just makes sense her grilling me has to do with her opinions on random people subbing for teachers. Then in the morning when we were walking to class a couple of kids walked ahead while this one kid who is a little special needs was walking super slow so the line kind of broke up. Those kids got ahead as I was telling them to stop, one kindergarten teacher met them at the corner & said to them "did you lose the rest of your class?" Once we turned the corner we were all together & the monitor was at the back of the line & that same teacher tells her pretty loudly once I pass of course "I guess I should keep my door closed today!" Like what?! Just because the line was a little separate doesn't mean the kids are going to be running wild. Like say that shit to my face. I really don't know what these people's problem is. Maybe it's because my kid goes to the school is my only guess. So they think I'm like some super spy or something & then I don't yell at the kids like they do especially in the hallway so they probably think I'm too laid back. If that's what you want to do go ahead. I'm "just a sub."

From a person that witnesses school lunch fairly often, these kids bs a lot or if they don't bs, they could be staring into space or just distracted by the loudness that they forget to eat or what have you. They often need those reminders to keep eating/"less talking, more eating" is my motto when I'm covering lunch. Lol just depends how good those lunch monitors are.

I was talking about it again tonight to DD. She did say she had enough time to finish her lunch today. She also said that some of the kids fool around a lot. So it really could be that is why they don't have enough time. DD probably gets herself into that group once in a while.

It's been a week 😔
My poor DS got sick at soccer. He was so upset. My aunt came to the game and that just added to his upset (he really wanted her to see him play). Poor kiddo! I felt so bad too because it really came out of nowhere for him.
There's so much other stuff but I don't want to downer the thread. Goodness knows I've needed support more before than I do now, but this week could take a hike anytime now.

Thanks skategirl128! That seems like such a short time your DS has for lunch. I thought 30 minutes was short, but 20, wow. Sorry your DS got sick at soccer. Also, if you need to talk about what's got you down, go for it. We're here for support. I hope things gets better for the weekend.

Even if she is not fooling around, it's probably distracting when other kids are. My son has said this to me before too. He would come home and his sandwich would still be in his lunch box with barely a bite taken out of it. With him, I am 100% sure it is because he was too busy being a chatterbox. Once we told him we were going to stop putting an extra treat in his lunchbox (goldfish, fruit snacks, etc) he somehow found the time to eat.
