Damn Rebecca and her need to make Kate perfect with her singing. This is going to be a hard one to watch I think.

So did he ever stop drinking? Hoping he did and he subbed the gym for AA meetings.

Blah. It was necessary for moving storylines along, but it definitely wasn't my favorite episode.

That’s 2 episodes in a row that I didn’t cry. Might be a new record for me

I’m just not a fan of the Kate singing storyline.

Eh, I actually liked it. I liked the development of Jack and Kate's stories. Showing Jack working through his drinking while Kate was singing Landslide was cool. No crying but still thought it was good.

I’m just not a fan of the Kate singing storyline. I like using it to develop the story with her feelings toward her mom and thought it worked in this episode. The actual picking up singing at 35 is kinda weird.

I'm also meh on the fostering storyline. It's feeling very random to me.

I did think it was sweet when Toby said he was team Kate for life.

I'm also meh on the fostering storyline. It's feeling very random to me. The only reason I'm not super excited about it is because I feel like we saw that storyline on Parenthood (the other family-based emotionally manipulative ensemble show I enjoyed), but I'm giving it a chance. I was Team Mom in the whole Kate thing. She really tried hard and continues to try hard to do her best with Kate. And I think she actually does a pretty nice job of being supportive; Kate is super sensitive (particularly adult Kate). Sure, she's not perfect, but are any of us perfect at this mothering thing? The show tries to make us more sympathetic to the parent with the addiction than the parent who told her kid to hold her last note a little longer (don't take that the wrong way; I love Jack).

H was bored this episode too. I cried a few times, but i found some of the subject matter resonated with me a lot. My mom is an alcoholic (currently in sobriety) and the scenes with Jack and Kate revolving around that topic really made me feel things. I also feel like these moments between them are starting to lead us to why Kate feels responsible for her dad’s death.
Also, is that the first time that we learned Jack was in Vietnam? I can’t remember if they alluded to that last season.

I actually think they made Rebecca very sympathetic in that dynamic. They focused on her face to show how proud she was of Kate when she was singing, how hard she worked on making the dress for her, and how much she was trying to connect with Kate through their mutual interest in singing. I think they really wanted us to see her efforts to be a good mom and to try to bond with and support her daughter. It was actually a really balanced look into the parent child relationship, since they also showed the things that Kate saw of her mom as a pre-teen (ex. Saying Kate is the best but then realizing her mom is much better) and magnifying them into a chasm that forms between them and just continues to grow throughout her life. I’m sure Jack’s death contributed to making the divide more severe, too.

I also felt like Rebecca tried super hard to be supportive of Kate and clearly still does. I didn't necessary follow how Rebecca singing in the shower was offensive to Kate. ??
This whole episode moved fairly slow, but also confused me. I didn't get much from it. I do find that I like Kevin more and more each episode!!

Also, isn't this not the first time Kevin's family has missed him performing? Didn't they do that with the play or am I miss-remembering?

I think it was because her mom had just told her that she was the best singer in the house, and then she walked in on her clearly singing the song much better than she could. I think she felt like her mom was lying to her, or being disingenuous in her praise of her.

I think the singing storyline just feels cheesy to me because of Mandy having been a professional singer. It feels like every time it is a part of the storyline the writers are like - hey viewers, did you know she can sing? Like really sing? She used to be a pop star. Now she plays a singer on TV. See what we did there?

I did feel more sympathetic towards Rebecca this time, but really - I don't think parents should ever tell their kids "do this and then it'll be perfect," especially when they are already proud of themselves or just happily singing for their family. And her comment after her gig "next time I have no doubt that you'll power through an audience like that." That's what you say if Kate says something to doubt herself. She didn't. She came out happy. I would be pissed if I were Kate. But like I said above, I don't like the singing storyline very much. And I also think Grandma Rebecca annoys me the most, so that's another reason I don't like it. I think knowing it's a 30 something character wearing makeup makes it feel fake to me, so basically anything Rebecca says as a 60 year old feels fake.

I think she felt like her mom was lying to her, or being disingenuous in her praise of her. I hadn't thought about it that way. It makes sense, but I still think Kate might be being a little high maintenance in that regard. I feel like Rebecca really is trying, but Kate won't give her the chance...

Oooh just watching it now.
So, I really likes Toby's 'team Kate's speech. Surprisingly.
