Our neighborhood pool doesn't have much shade and D wants to swim. I am thinking of getting some type of pop up tent or containment device with shade to take with us for J since he can't get in the water and is more prone to sunburns.
Recommendations?

We have the Lightspeed pop up from Costco. I wish I could remember how long the first one lasted, but we're on our second since 2011. However, Costco did replace that first one for free.

I use this for R when we hang out outside. It's like $10 at IKEA.

We have a pop up shade/tent thing that folds up into a flat disc pouch - which makes it very portable and easy to store. It might be too big for a public pool though - not sure if there is a big grassy area where you could use it? It's big enough for 2 people, so that's a plus. One word of caution though - if you get something like this, practice with it before you leave the house! Folding it up the first few times can be tricky. Unfolding it is so simple...(you just open the zipper and it pops into shape). Getting it back in the container is another story. When we first used it at the beach, DH and I were afraid we'd have to give it away or something, because we couldn't figure out how to get it back in it's case for like an hour! www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N9CRI93?psc=1

I second the Ikea tent. Super cheap and easy to setup/collapse.
We use something different for outside. We have this for K's travelcrib:https://www.guavafamily.com/products/lotus-everywhere-travel-crib We got the sunshade to go with it and it does the trick. It would be pretty pricy just for use at the beach but if you are in the market for a travel crib as well this may be a good option.

sheilathetank, the ad for that crib pops up on my FB a lot, and I always wondered if it was a good as it seemed to be.

We got a pack n play at our shower since everyone and their cousin said they are the bomb.com. After over an hour, three people, and much swearing we set it up. It was not packable. We returned it and got the lotus. It takes, no lie, 30 seconds to set up and take down. The case has backpack straps for easy carrying. We keep it in the trunk almost all the time since it's such a small item. I consider it a must have.

Am I going to want something that I can keep him in? There are more options that have an open side. He is crawler still.
