What do you do?
Is it what you thought you'd do when you went to school/started working?
If you could go back to/start college again now, would you choose the same career?

I am a college chemistry professor. It's what I have wanted to do since college, and I've wanted to be a teacher even longer. I would probably choose the same career again. It's is fun and fulfilling and leaves me time to spend with my family, so it's a fairly good balance. We'll see how tenure goes, though!

DrHooch, I have such love for my chem prof. Whenever I'm in my hometown I go visit him. I'm mildly dyslexic (much worse with numbers) and he was fantastic about asking me to clarify whenever I'd make an obvious mistake writing formulas.

Right now I stay at home. I'm currently working on re-licensing to be an RN again.
I've changed my major about a million times. The highlights are that I dropped out of pharm school when H got overseas orders (before we were married) so I could get my ADN and we could get married before we moved. Then I got my BSPsych with an emphasis in child development because I knew I wanted to focus on children whatever I did (in the mean time, I was a DCP for SN kids). When we were TTTC, I decided to go back to rad tech school, but the day I registered was the day I found out I was pg with DS2, and the program interview was on my due date.
So now, my plan is to be a pediatric FNP and eventually get my doctorate. I can do it mostly online so H's career won't affect it like other careers I'd like to pursue, and it is something I'm genuinely interested in.

DrHooch - I'm not a science person, but loved chemistry! Formulas are one of my love languages LOL hawkward - Good luck working on your re-licensing! I'm a tax accountant specializing in high-wealth individual, multi-state corporate and individual tax, and international accounting. It's a pretty stressful field since we're subject to international regulations, annual tax law updates, Congress, etc. My job is surely more law than math. I have my bachelors in accounting and my masters in forensic studies with a concentration in accounting. My masters was kind of fun. And I'm trained to take the stand as an expert witness, which has come in handy. But overall I don't enjoy my job. I work for the 1%, so I'm constantly staring at really BIG numbers for really BIG clients. Plus, the stress... OMG the stress... I'm much more interested in auditing, which I did for a few years before entering the tax arena. I worked specifically in SOX auditing within the banking industry. Unfortunately, it was a great job at the wrong time in my life. I ended up in tax because of the flexibility and the money. Plus, if all goes well, I can semi-retire at 60 (or earlier) and work seasonally (January 1st through April 15th) then take the rest of the year off or do contractual bookkeeping or something. If I had my choice, I'd probably go back and get a degree in accounting with a concentration in auditing, a masters in auditing, and go work for the banking industry again. I mean, I still could, but after 7 years in higher education and I'm done. So done LOL

What do you do? Is it what you thought you'd do when you went to school/started working? If you could go back to/start college again now, would you choose the same career? I am a NICU RN. I've only ever worked in the nicu and ideally would never work in any other unit. Maybe peds cardiac surgery. I have my generalized MS in nursing that's focused on management, if I wanted to switch from bedside nursing, but I really don't. I went to college and got a BA in anthropology. I was interested in international health and development but the Midwest is not a hub for that... so when I moved to the Midwest from the east coast to be near my DH (then BF), I took some time to figure out what else I wanted to do- I had narrowed it down to social worker or nurse. So I volunteered at a hospital and realized how much I loved it, and went to nursing school for an accelerated program for people who already had bachelors degree to get a nursing degree and masters all in one. Originally I was in the masters program to become an APN- a clinical nurse specialist, but I realized I did NOT want to do that, and the PNP program wouldn't accept transfers, so I switched to the general masters program. Roundabout way to get to a job I adore and feel is what I was meant for. My college didn't offer nursing, so other than maybe doing biology so I didn't have to do a bunch of pre-reqs before nursing school, I wouldn't change anything. I could have I guess gone tona different college but nursing was not remotely on my radar when I was 18, and I wouldn't have met my DH, so I'm good with how things turned out, for the most part. I still think about going back to become an NNP, but now most places require a DNP and I am not about that research life.

addymac - Thanks for all you do as a NICU RN. The nurses totally saved my sanity when C was in the NICU. I think about them often. What you do makes a huge difference {{hugs}}

For health ressons, I don't have a career I thought for most of my life that I would teach elementary, but finishing college turned out to be financially unfeasible. I've been a nanny for most of my adult life, career wise. But what I really need to focus on is writing, as that is my passion.

I work in HR for a nonpublic school. My primary focus is recruiting, but I do a lot of compensation analysis, onboarding, training and a little employee relations as well. I love working at a school and the work/life balance it offers. Prior to this, I worked in the F&B industry (also in HR) for 8 years and my life revolved around sports schedules. While I had some amazing opportunities because of it, I hated the schedule. So finding this position at the time that I started job searching was perfect.
I initially went to college with the intent to major in Accounting. LOL, young Boxerific was so dumb. I hated it and did horribly in those classes. Thankfully, I was in an Intro to Business class that introduced me to HR.
I like what I do and am happy with where life has taken me, but if I could do it again, I'd probably look into a therapy type position - Speech, OT, PT. I think I would have really liked doing something like that, but since you have to make life decisions at 18, I didn't even know that kind of field existed.
ETA decided to follow directions and answer all of the questions

ETA: I do want to get a Master's in something, though. It bothers me that I am the only one of my siblings and siblings-in-law without anything beyond a BA and my husband has a PhD. I know it's stupid and probably a waste of money, but if I get a Master's in library sciences or history, I could get a job as a librarian or at a museum or something. So, I know you know it's silly to feel this way, but I do get it. Even though I have a masters, I constantly feel slightly inadequate compared to my H who has a MD & PhD, and I am "just" a bedside nurse and not an APN like a PNP.... esp since originally that was the track I was going for, but changed my mind. Now people are always like "awww a nurse and a doctor... how cute" and I'm like 🙄😒 or, his gparents, super sweet, but always are like oh are you an APN yet, bc they remember when I was in school for that, and then tell me about their friends grandkids who are APNs and I'm like 😐😑 a masters in library sciences or history and being a librarian or working in a museum sounds really freakin cool.
