So I'm hoping someone can help me. My baby is about three and a half months old. I've been exclusively pumping the whole time and have never had trouble with my supply, in fact I was pumping too much. I got my Kyleena IUD in on Wednesday. Then on Thursday I got an ear infection and on Friday started amoxicillan. Today, in my pumping session where I normally can pump 12 ozs, I only got 6. What should I do? I googled both antibiotics and the Kyleena and neither says that it would affect supply but obviously something has. Is it too late to fix it??? I'm freaking out a little right now because I wanted to make a year with this baby, just like I did with my first, and until today it didn't look like I would have a problem doing that.

I would not expect the amoxicillin to cause a drop in supply. Is the IUD hormonal? If so, it's certainly possible that is could cause your supply to decrease. It's hard to say whether you will only experience that temporarily or not. I would let your OB know if you continue to pump half of your normal amount today. You may also want to call Kyleena directly and report this adverse effect if they are advertising it as not affecting milk supply.
Make sure you are drinking lots of water! I hope this is only temporary!

Illness is a common cause for a drop in pump output. Other common causes include needing to change your pump parts (valves, membranes, duckbills depending on brand) or ovulation/your period. 6oz in a pump session is still above average and should be more than enough for a feeding while you figure this out.

While I know that 6oz is above average, I had a very careful schedule where I could pump three times a day and get the 28 ozs for the next day's bottles. I had been extremely lucky with supply but honestly exclusively pumping would have never worked for me otherwise. So for me, suddenly dropping that much is catastrophic to my overall output. Thank you so much for suggesting new pump parts. I'll find my spares and change them out today. And I'm going to really hope it was a fluke because of my ear infection. I think, because I didn't FEEL very sick I discounted that but my supply seems a little better for my morning session already so I'm crossing my fingers. Thanks so much for your help!!!!

hurricanerek Thank you so much for your response! I really just had so much happen at once that I had no idea what the cause could be!! I'm getting more this morning though, after having a real fail of a day yesterday, so I'm hopeful!!!

The important thing is to continue removing milk often and drink lots of water. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hope your supply is doing better. I would suggest trying not to worry so much about one pumping session and only worrying if it becomes a declining trend. I always noticed a lower output if I was sick too. I hope it picks right back up and you feel better soon! 😘😘

So you are only pumping 3 times? How many times are you removing milk from your breasts per day? Based on your LO's age, your milk production may be moving from hormonal based to supply and demand, meaning you need to be removing milk often enough to keep demand up. Add in illness and you may have a drop.
