Costumes - have your child decide on a costume. I would make the deadline at least a month before.
You need to decide are you ordering or are you making. Have your child try on if you are not sure. Most places with not accept returns.
Check the forecast (farmer's almanac) for cold or rainy weather. You may need to add sweatshirts, thermal shirts, raincoats, etc.
Thrift stores and the FB marketplace will have costumes this time of year.
Are you dressing up? These are things to start considering now.
Candy - are you buying and passing candy out? Check your local sales papers for sales on these items.
Where are you going to house this candy? Do you have a bucket or something to put all this in. Dollar Tree and the like can help with this.
Is your kid having a Halloween thing at school? You may want to do snack bags or buy something where each child in the class can get it.
Decorations - are you decorating outdoors or no? You could do simple doormat. Door décor like a wreath or a hanging sign. Whatever your level of comfort is.
You can change a lightbulb to purple or orange. This is simple and effective.
Mums at the door is a popular fall décor.
Do you decorate inside? You can do something in the living room. Fireplace mantle if you have one. Some signs around the house. I even have kitchen related stuff I put out. Again check your local Dollar Tree, Home Goods, Kirkland's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby. You don't have to break the bank. There are levels to this shit. Plus you can add to your collection every year.
If you have to order decorations now is the time.
Things to consider:
spiderwebs and spiders
hanging skeletons? I don't do this cause my DS gets nervous.
hanging ghosts
graveyard in the yard - I tried this and MH said I failed miserably and it looked cheap. Whatever.
Pumpkin - do you want to go pumpkin picking. Carve one out? I don't personally but again be mindful of the pumpkin patches popping up or sales at your local store.
Halloween night - you need a bag or something for your kid. I recommend you bring back up plastic store bags or comparable. I bring a back pack. Your kid's bag might get heavy, full, or break and you can unload some or all or have a bag just in case.
I guarantee you may also meet a child along the way who had a bag malfunction of some sort and you can pass a bag on.
I like to get something glow in the dark for my kids to wear.
If you stay home get your some Halloween music to play off your phone or something. Spotify and Pandora will have playlists.
Take pictures of your kids. This seems like a no brainer but once they get excited you may not be able to get them to take a pic. I would try as soon as they are dressed.
Remember to have fun. Whatever you do your kids will enjoy. They are not comparing you to anyone else.
Anyone else have anything to add?
