So on Friday C's teacher said she had been acting sad and just sort of off all day. When we picked her up at school her eyes were kind of red and she had a low grade fever. Since O had just been diagnosed with strep, I took her in thinking that is what it was but her strep test was negative. On Saturday she was acting fine, but Sunday afternoon she developed an itchy rash that was on her ankles and wrists. I thought it was a reaction to a new bug spray, but now she says it was itchy before that and the rash is mostly on her hands and feet including the palms/soles and on her elbows and knees. In some places it is little blisters. Does it sound like HFM? She has no oral involvement though, does that come later?

Sounds like it could def be HFM. If I remember correctly, there's a range of symptoms that kids can exhibit. Some get a rash, some don't, etc. I would def take her in and get her checked again.
New school germs are the worst. How she feels better soon!

^agreed. Def could be HFM. My kids never had more rash than a few dots (practically unnoticeable) and didn't have mouth soreness until way later.

However, it sounds like she may have a pretty mild case, if it hasn't gotten worse. Both my kids had super mild cases, too. Fingers crossed a) it's something else or b) it's mild and no one else gets it! Especially you.

Thanks everyone, that is what I thought. I let her teacher know and I will be calling the pediatrician as soon as they open. Any advice on what to expect or how to deal? Is there any way the rest of our family is not going to get this?

Which is surprising since C sucks his thumb.

Well the pedi was just like - it sounds like a typical rash they get after having a fever, nbd. I'm still keeping her home today because she's miserable, but I hate when her pedi dismisses things and then I've got a kid who is too sick to go to school but not sick enough for a doctor's note so that their absence is excused.

That sounds exactly like HFM. N got it from school once and had zero mouth sores, just a one tiny red dot just below his lip. We thought it was an eczema flare at first since it was really bad around his wrists. But he had a few tiny red dots on his fingers, palms, soles of feet, and diaper area that we didn't even really notice until the doctor started really looking for them. The pediatrician said there really aren't many other things that involve the palms or soles of the feet. But it's viral, so there's really nothing you can do but wash hands a lot to prevent spreading.

She has a ton of spots on her hands/fingers/wrists, all over her feet, elbows and knees, a couple on her nose, and several going up her legs, some of which could actually be chigger bites from our walk in the woods on Sunday. Some of the spots are blisters. Should I keep her home from school again tomorrow? I wish her doctor would have been concerned enough to discuss it with me!

If it is HFM, it's contagious for the first week or so. The blisters sound like HFM to me, I don't think you would have blisters with a normal virus/fever rash. I'd keep her home if you have the option, she'll probably still be uncomfortable tomorrow. Maybe call the school and see their policy? They might send her home anyways with a rash like that. Explain you suspect she could have HFM but the doctor doesn't want to see her, and maybe they will excuse. If I was a school admin, I would not want kids spreading that around school.

critter015 I am annoyed at your doctor. I would not send her to school like that unless you're sure those are chigger bites.

When we had hfm, DC required us to have a note for w to come back. The ped wanted all of the spots crusted over. I don't think either kid had blisters in their mouths, but I wound up with them down my throat and only a couple on my hands/feet.
I'm irritated for you that your ped didn't want you to come in for something that might be hfm, if nothinore than to check it and get a note for school.

I called the pedi back and left a message asking about it being contagious and about going back to school/getting a note. They called back and said that since she wasn't seen they aren't sure what the rash is but typically they are no longer contagious after the fever is gone. She mentioned HFM as a possibility. I'm rolling my eyes at the "since she wasn't seen" since they said they didn't want to see her. They said they would write her a note for today, but since she's been fever free for more than 24 hours she can go to school tomorrow.

Fwiw our state licensing says that once the fever is gone for 24 hours the kids are no longer contagious and can go back to DC/school, rash notwithstanding.

I just updated her teacher and she sounds like she doesn't think I should bring her tomorrow. I told her I would see how she was feeling in the morning and decide from there, since the doctor did clear her.
