Watched last week. I think it was discussed on TCF but I'm not sure. I have so many questions for bio dad. Like how did you not see what was going on or ask more questions. Did he just call it quits and pay support? They weren't very clear on his role.

Yes, we talked about it on TCF. I'm still blown away by the lifelong ramifications of DeeDee's actions. Gypsy has had her salivary glands removed. That has to require medication for the rest of her life, right?
As for her father, I can totally see DeeDee manipulating him since he was younger than her and making him feel like an inadequate caregiver. Sociopaths be sociopathing...

To further this thread a bit since it was talked about on TCF, what does everyone think about Gypsys conviction? Is she serving the right amount of time? Did she deserve it? What about her boyfriend?
SPOILERS AHEAD for anyone reading...
So post what y'all think!

I don't know what to think about Gypsy. I think she was certainly victimized and abused. But she seems calculating and manipulative too. Whether that is just how she is or of she learned that by being raised by Deedee I'm not sure. But she seems to still be playing that "little innocent girl" role in her interviews and I'm not super buying it.

Deedee was clearly evil, but she literally listened to her mom die violently and then lie to Nick's family, the cops and to her dad and stepmom. She also had computer access while living with her mom, is it possible she could've googled anything or webmd?

The pictures she sent to her boyfriend floored me. And the fact that they had sex in the bathroom at the movie theater when they first met in person. How did Deedee even let her go pee by herself? I have so many questions.

I can imagine him just making up that part of the story (or a creation of his mental illness).

Godejohn says Gypsy dragged him to the bathroom immediately, where they had sex. Otherwise, the encounter didn't go the way Gypsy wanted it to. Dee Dee didn't take to Godejohn, who she found "creepy" and "weird."" So I guess I'm not sure if he made that up or not. I'm not sure Gypsy mentions it.

I had read a lot about this case previously, but the documentary made everything so much more real and emotional for me. The physical torture that poor Gypsy endured over the course of her life is just sickening and heartbreaking.
H and I had a long discussion about how culpable Gypsy is. There is such a fine line between being manipulated for your entire childhood and early adulthood and taking responsibility for your actions as an adult.
I think I actually would be more "lenient" if Gypsy had independently lashed out at her mom; it would have spoken more to a battered woman defense. Her own level of manipulation, though, in all of her online correspondence and involving someone else and getting him to kill her mom indicates increased culpability to me.

I think that's the crux of the issue for me too. Had Gypsy lashed out herself in the middle of another one of her mom's treatments or the heat of the moment, I could *potentially* be in board with her walking away Scott free. But the fact that she manipulated someone else, willfully and intentionally planned it, I do honk she deserves some time in prison. Not to diminish what she went through. But she's just not as innocent as I think she's like to portray.

I feel horrible for the abuse and trauma she suffered, and I'm sure she thought killing her mom was her only escape. But it would be the same situation in a domestic violence situation or any other abuse situation...self defense is one thing, but planning a murder and recruiting people to assist is another.

I thought her sentence was appropriate, all things considered.
It's tricky though, because I feel that gypsy is also manipulative (like her mom). OTOH, how could she be anything but given the abuse she suffered being raised by her mother. Gypsy can't be blamed for that.
It's really sad how everyone failed her. Her father, medical professionals, law enforcement. The murder could have been prevented if gypsy's abuse had been caught at any point. OTOH, I see how it would have been very hard to catch.

She understood right from wrong and that her mother would be dead. She 100% planned it and it was premeditated. She had a 2nd grade education and limited access to the world, but 10 years (8 for good behavior) is getting off light. I do feel it is the appropriate sentence because of the premeditation and I do not feel she should have received more because she was abused by her mother. I can't imagine the level of abuse required to convince a small child to stay in a wheel chair when they could walk.

I am watching it now.
When we talked about this before I said then, I felt there was a point where things changed and Gypsy had to be involved in the big SCAM.
I don't believe for a minute that her mother had her "confined" to a wheelchair. She would have had atrophy of her muscles. I believe she was walking around well when she was alone with her mother.

I don't buy her being completely honest with anyone. I believe she was born to a grifter and then got in on the grift too at some point.
I don't buy her on the interviews being so innocent.
I mean she knew she could walk but she wouldn't.

It's a really tricky case. I watched the documentary, read about it and I can still see how someone can make a fair argument on either side. She's been medicated and filled with treatments her entire life. She has essentially been a lab rat for her mother. But she also played along, she also planned a murder. There were times she seems to have low intelligence and other times she seems quite bright. There were times she seems like a mastermind and other times when I thought she had no concept of what she was saying. It's such a strange case. I don't know where to stand on it because I think there are really sound arguments on either side.

I didn't think Gypsy was as cut off from the world as some of you do. Didn't she have TV and internet? I thought she met men online and had dates?

I guess part of the reason why I don't buy is because in old videos and movies there she is talking about dolls and Barbies and acting child like. She had to act that part.
Like in the video when she was laughing and said, "Are we still on?" Her voice was deeper. It was like she was checking to see if she could stop the act.

Even in the interviews for the documentary, she isn't talking with that little girl voice. Her speech, her vocabulary, her reasonings, etc. Clearly Gypsy knew she was not mentally delayed so in all those videos and getting free trips and houses etc were all her acting. She had to be in on it to act it out like she was.
Anyway, I am just talking. Not trying to convince anyone.

What I found most interesting is, while it's pretty obvious ( after the fact) that DeeDee had Munchhausen by Proxy, it seems that the disease slowly morphed into Gypsy having Munchhausen herself. Gypsy knew that her hair was growing, because they had to shave her head, she knew that she was capable of walking, and she knew to allow her mother to speak for her at doctors appointments.
While DeeDee was controlling Gypsy, things seemed to morph over time to where Gypsy started to seek attention too. There were times in the interview that she seemed almost gleeful about the attention that she was getting.
It's not totally black and white. Was DeeDee a victim of Gypsy? Yes. Was Gypsy a victim of DeeDee? Yes. Will the whole truth ever come out? Probably not.
My other observation is that the deep Louisiana bayou accent is unlike anything I have ever heard before.

Gypsy knew she wasn't mentally delayed so she had to act child like.
She knew enough and how to get online and join a dating site. I mean Nick wasn't the first man she met online from what I recall.
She knew how to role play. She knew how to stage and take those pictures. She knew baby got back, LOL. She knew how to caption.

Having watched the doc, I'm more conflicted about Gypsy. I don't know if I agree that she willfully kept up the act, more that I think she went along with what her mom told her to do for whatever reason her mom gave her. Or because she was scared of her mom.
Yeah, she was sneaking around behind her mom's back, but she went to sleep in that house and never just got up and walked out the door. I don't think she had a remotely clear grasp on what was real, what was pretend, and what she could do to help herself.

I don't think gypsy had any frame of reference to figure out what was normal. She went online, but gravitated towards weird people and weird things.

I mean, she said herself she knew she could walk. She didn't have atrophy of the legs. She had normal muscle mass. That means she was walking around normally. Just not when people were around obviously.
She knew her hair would grow.
She had to know that she didn't have a child mind. She would get online and join dating sites. She knew how to pack her clothes and get a ride to that man's house.
I mean she knew how to arrange the date, she knew how to plan to buy Nick's ticket, so she knew how to manage money.
She knew how to plan travel plans, Greyhound tickets, etc. She clearly knew she was not ID/MR.
Again, I deal with people very often who try to portray themselves to be a certain way. I mean we deal with kids sometimes being told by their parents on how to be during testing again for personal gain.
Her vocabulary and speech content when she met with her father and her step mother was very advanced.
