Snacks are among the top items I need in my bag. Lara bars, chocolate, whatever we have on hand at the time. My hospital is 30 minutes from our house and there aren't any food places close by. I think my Mom drove 15 minutes to get me Chipotle last time. I am gluten free so hospital food is a challenge. The rooms have fridges so people can bring me things and I can keep them cold if needed.

DH was saying we need to go ahead and pack the hospital bag and install the car seat. He's convinced it'll happen any day now. I still have 5.5 weeks to go!
Anyway, I agree with everything said here. I also way over packed last time, so I'm keeping it simple this time.

I will probably pack some stuff last minute. Also, add me to the list of not having a car seat yet.... I picked one out though!

For my first, I packed way too much, especially for him. I had swaddles, outfits, diapers, wipes, etc. and literally none of it was used or touched except for his going home outfit. We were constantly skin-to-skin or he was swaddled in their blanket, used their diapers/wipes, etc. So for this baby, I'm packing a going home outfit (one for a boy and one for a girl) a pacifier, hat, booties (zutanos are the best!) and blanket. Oh and infant car seat.
For me: Birthing gown Hospital outfit (nursing tank, pajama bottoms and robe) for after birth and to wear when guests come by. Home outfit Cell charger Toiletries Nursing pillow Breast pads (I'm already producing) Lanolin And laugh all you want but the hospital pads and mesh underwear SUCK so I'm bringing adult diapers and tucks

caitost21, no shame in the Depends. They made recovery SO much easier for me with DS, not having to worry about leaking through pads or staining underwear. Just kept a big trash bag in the bathroom and used the Depends + Tucks until the bleeding lightened up.

Flame free wednesday confession: When I had DS, I did not realize you could wear your own clothes at the hospital. I wore the stupid gowns the whole time. I also did not realize DS could wear clothes so he was just in a diaper and swaddled in a blanket the whole time.

I stayed in the gown because I didn't want to mess up my clothes. I also just kept DS swaddled to make skin to skin easier.

Special snowflake, but since DD was in an incubator, she was basically in only a diaper, then one of the Kimono onesies & a swaddle once she was able to be in just the crib portion of the incubator. She got real clothes a week after birth when we were able to bring her home.
ETA: like I don't think we even brought anything to the hospital for her until she was being discharged.

I hated the hospital gown, mesh undies, etc and as soon as my IVs were out, I was getting into comfy, regular clothing. It helped me feel so much better! I didn't feel like my bleeding was crazy or anything, so I wasn't worried about getting my clothing all messy.
Also, my hospital requests parents to leave baby in just diaper and the swaddle sack until you're heading to go home, so definitely a lot of things are hospital specific! They also provide all diapers, wipes, lanolin, etc.

+1 to staying in a hospital gown for most of the stay with DS, usually with my boobs out. The hospital staff would always apologize when they walked in the room but I didn't care lol.
I also only used the hospital provided kimonos and swaddles on DS. I'm considering bringing a few sleepers instead for #2 but if the hospital doesn't want me to use them, I won't.

I just remembered something for my bag. I got an elmo toy that DS2 will be "giving" DS1 at the hospital.

Question about PP bleeding. I know there is no way for anyone to be able to tell me how much I will bleed post partum but does anyone notice any correlation between their PP bleeding and menstrual bleeding?
Like, I normally bleed quite heavily, I should assume I'd do the same after birth, yes?

Add me to the list of people who like the hospital mesh undies. I tend to be a heavy bleeder, so I didn't want to mess up my own stuff. I also stayed in the hospital gowns and didn't wear my own clothes until I went home. Same reason - didn't want to mess up my own clothing and make more laundry for myself to do when we got home. cythe I have stage IV endo, so I tend to have heavier than normal periods. I also ended up bleeding pretty heavily for the first 2 days PP, but once DS latched on day 3 and we got in the breastfeeding groove, my bleeding lightened up considerably. So - I don't know if my period heaviness is related to the PP bleeding, but take that anecdote for what it's worth. Also - I will warn you - my hospital bathroom looked like a murder scene the first 2 days from all the blood. I was kind of freaked out by it, but it got better!!! The poor cleaning ladies though.... Oh, and one last thing...even though I exclusively breastfeed DS (including many middle of the night feedings), my stupid period came back at 6 weeks PP. That was a total bummer - I had these glorious dreams of being period free while breastfeeding. NOPE.

cythe, negative for me, PP bleeding was like 10x worse. Like Taitai, said the bathroom was an ugly scene. At one point I think the day after or 2nd day, I had risen from bed and blood just gushed down and I had a trail of blood all the way to the bathroom. My hospital gown was soaked. They had to send someone in to mop and clean it. I ended up having a CS though so not sure if that factored into the bleeding? No other preexisting conditions though.

The first day or two of pp bleeding is a horror scene. Literally. After that it slows to a manageable flow. Most don't bleed super heavily for more than a few days and then a heavy and then it tapers off to spotting for eternity.

cythe, I'd be prepared for either. My friend told me not to take anything except going home clothes and wear hospital stuff so I didn't ruin my own things with PP bleeding. My sister said she didn't have trouble with ruining clothes. I ended up wearing mesh undies, hospital pads, and my own nursing friendly nightgown/clothes. Bleeding was bad, but I wouldn't call mine a murder scene. I don't have extremely heavy periods. No idea if that's related; I could have a different experience this time....

I too referred to the bathroom as a murder scene. And I kept getting conflicting answers on whether I should flush or leave everything in the pan thing. So one nurse would ask if I went and go to look to see how much I peed when I had already flushed and then the next one wouldn't ask and it'd still be in there. Sigh. Luckily the one time my mil used that bathroom it was clean, but I still tried to stop her and have her use the one in the waiting room.
Anyway, bleeding didn't seem to be too heavy, but my periods aren't overly heavy either.

Anyone mention packing a short extension cord yet??? That was a game changer for having my phone plugged in and getting to use it in the bed!

I definitely bled more PP than I do during my period and agree that the bathroom was a bit frightening. But only for the first couple days and then it tapered off pretty quickly. It would start back up if I overdid it but overall wasn't too terrible.
I loved the padsicles and have all the stuff to make them again. I also have depends as back up in case I don't get enough mesh undies. I also have cheap underwear to use until the bleeding stops so I don't wreck my good stuff
