Cord blood donation

There are loads of STMs here so I am sure all of you have been solicited about cord blood banking. Anyways I just wanted to put this out here and pass on some info about donation if it hadn't crossed anyones mind. Many of us are coming down the wire and if you are thinking of donating, now is the time to look into it before it's too late.

If considering donation first check with your OB if the hospital you’re delivering at participates in the donor program.

FYI - We banked DS cord blood to potentially be useful for my nephew however we will be donating fella #2 since learning a month ago about my nephew's dx.

I love this - thanks for pulling this together duskymonkey! They don't have any public banks for cord blood donation over here where we live (it is all private banking...which is expensive and I learned is not as effective or beneficial as public banking). If we lived in the states, we would for sure be donating DS2's cord blood to a public bank.

We donated DS's cord blood to a public bank. It was a bit of process and I lost some extra blood while they were collecting it but I'm glad I did it. Still, I don't think we'll do it again. If I recall, using donor gametes disqualifies you anyway.

Our hospital doesn't partner with and public cord banking sites or we would donate to a public bank. From what I've read, I don't think private banking isnt as effective for that specific child and is more widely used for siblings or relatives (if used at all). I would definetly donate to a public bank if it was available to us as an option.

Taitai, danvers, that is correct regarding storage for own use from what I've read and according to the AAP, this is due to the blood being contaminated with already existing disease or disorders that the banker has/ developed. Public banking is encouraged if possible. Also I think you've mentioned that you live away from a metro city, as do I and there is nothing in our state even though ironically I found out there is a lab at a huge hospital which processes both private and public but due to legislation cannot process public donors which is dumb. There are however, 2 labs which are able to do mail in. Lifeforce is much easier to deal with. I made multiple calls to saneron over the last 2 weeks and still haven't heard back from them 😡

bootsorhearts1, i believe you are correct. I had no idea your bubs was from a donor. Congratulations! And how special is that! We almost went down that route ( either donor eggs or embryo) but DS decided to spotaneously happen after we threw up in the towel so we are blessed twice one!
