We use Vega Vanilla. I've been doing it with coffee or pre-brewed chai tea. I think the bitterness of the "mixers" help it not feel sweet...it actually only has 1g sugar and 150 cal/scoop. The sugars are from fruits...no added sugars.

The chocolate ones make me want real shakes too. It never works the other way though. Rude.
I don't find the vanilla or caramel flavor of Slimfast Advanced Nutrition nearly as sweet. I blend the vanilla with fruit and veggies sometimes which definitely cuts the sweetness. Those are 20g of protein, 1g of sugar, and 110 calories (maybe...I'm going from memory). I find them at Walmart or order on Amazon.

I lived off protein shakes for just under a month earlier this year. I recommend Premier Proteinfor ready to drink shakes. There are several flavors. the vanilla was much too sweet for me, but the chocolate and caramel weren't bad, and I know there are many other flavors. It was by far the most convenient type I tried because it was decent cold or room temp. I'd compare the texture to thick chocolate milk.
For powder, I like True Nutrition. You can make your own mix, so you can choose to go light on sweetener. It definitely has that powder chalkiness that the Premier doesn't have, but I found it more filling (similar protein amounts though).

Another rec for the Premier protein drinks. I use some in my coffee when I want a latte taste and I don't like too sweet but think they are good.

The reason we use the Vega is that it is completely plant based protein and zero added or artificial sweeteners. (Whey gives me gas and we avoid soy).
SO makes "milk shakes" with them for the kids (half scoop between them with almond milk and a banana and maybe some sun butter or berries). It helps boost days when they eat like crap and is a sneaky way to have a not "treat" treat.
It really doesn't taste like anything too sweet, especially when added to coffee or tea with some ice cubes.
SO drinks his warm with some coconut oil like a "bulletproof" coffee.

We use Plant Fusion (vanilla bean flavor). I get it on amazon and it's cheaper than Vega one. I either mix it with unsweetened almond milk or skim milk with a tablespoon of Pb and a banana.
It still tastes good without the pb and banana.

AmyG Is he type 1 or type 2? I hope he can get better control of his BS levels with this new diet. Go to truenutrition.com and play around with their "make your own powder" feature. There are different flavors and sweetness levels (and sweeteners) you can choose, plus different protein sources. It gives you a description of the flavor and benefits of each source. Once he's into the protein drink habit, I think it would be a great resource for him because he could tailor it to his needs and it's a lot less expensive than other brands I've tried. I hope this is the gateway to much better health for him.

I hope this is the gateway to much better health for him. He's type 2 diabetic. Under control with meds by mouth. His a1c is 5.7 So right now the trouble is to keep him from crashing. Last night we were fighting really low lows when he decided to eat low carb by their directive all day and he took his regular doses of diabetic drugs. Luckily he felt the crash to 45 before he headed off to sleep. So we stayed up half the night playing yo yo with his sugars. Call in to his doc as soon as they open to get more guidance in adjusting his meds. As for make your own protein drinks that's not what he's supposed to be doing right now to form new habits. So he's supposed to use ready to drink for the next month. We shall see Diet not looking diabetic friendly at the moment even though they supposedly are good at this stuff That truly makes absolutely zero sense. You pour powder into liquid and shake, then drink. Did they mean not making smoothies? Because that would make sense. I find all of the pre-made ones too sweet. I avoid them like the plague. Muscle Milk is the absolute worst. I can tolerate Slim Fast. The chocolate ones are less sweet than the other flavors in my experience. They do have a caramel latte flavor- I have no idea what the sweetness is like on that one.

Establish the good habit as easily as possible. I was thinking more long term for the True Nutrition. Being that low is scary. Is he working with someone who actually specializes in diabetes?

I like the Julian bakery egg white protein powder. The espresso flavor is delicious and I just ordered the cinnamon roll flavor. I mix it with almond milk and ice. I don't do well with the whey or soy protein shakes.
Getting that low is scary! I hope he is doing much better.

The one thing I will say is do not buy the LeanFit Complete Green Vanilla at Costco (It's like the cheaper version of vega vanilla). It's the first and only opened item I have ever returned because I legit cannot drink it. It is so sickeningly sweet, it was nasty.
