So I've been on baby aspirin since the beginning of this pregnancy to reduce the risk of pre-e because some of my early BP's we're borderline hypertensive. My BPs lately have been fine. I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow and just realized no one ever told me when I should stop taking it. I'm assuming it's best not to be on it during delivery? For those of you who have taken it, when did your doc have you stop? I have an appointment on Friday so I'll ask then but I just started thinking about it this morning.

I take it throughout my pregnancies too and my OB has me stop at 37 weeks. My c-sections are generally at 39 weeks, so 2 weeks before giving birth.
If your BP is fine, I'm sure it's okay to stop taking them. I would definitely ask your OB first though just to be sure.

I took it but my doctor had me stop taking it after my 12 week appointment. Not sure the reasoning.

I hope your doctor was able to give you info. I was prepared to stop at 36 weeks, then kept going for an extra week because I was anxious to stop it, and then baby started showing amniotic low fluid and the MFM said to keep taking it until a few days prior to induction/delivery. New OB was surprised that had been the plan last time, so not sure what will be happening this time other than that it may be different. I'm assuming it will be discussed with MFM when I start going for BPPs and growth scans at 32 weeks.

Just a follow up in case anyone is looking for this info later, my doctor had my stop this week at 38 weeks.

I'm really surprised that I'm supposed to take it through labor and delivery and 6 wks pp. I'm a little worried about hemorrhage.

elliecat17, I don't think it's a big deal. My OB said a baby aspirin a day should not really cause any major bleeding issues especially with a vaginal delivery but in case of c-section it may just cause a bit of leaky incision site and cause more bruising, which is more of an annoying complication than really dangerous. I was nervous to stop taking it because I know pre-e can arise even post delivery. In fact, my cousins OB had her stay on it the whole pregnancy because his philosophy was he could deal with bleeding issues better than he could pre-e, so I guess every doctor/midwife has their own philosophy on it.

cali, thanks for starting this thread. I am on baby aspirin for pre-e too and it never occurred to me that I would have to stop at some point! I will be a RCS so I assume they'll have me stop at some point. I'm on 31 weeks and they haven't said anything so far. Thank goodness my BP has been ok so far. ::knocks on wood::

bootsorhearts1, definitely ask. I think my OB would have completely forgotten about it if I hadn't asked about it. I stopped at 38 weeks and delivered at 39w3d and had to get vaginal packing post-delivery because I had a small tear that needed sutures and the sutures kept oozing which they think is from the aspirin. They said the effects of aspirin can last for up to 2 weeks after you stop. It wasn't a big deal but the packing of the vagina right after giving birth was not the best.
