For DD1, she wasn't named for a day. We had six names on the whiteboard in the hospital and we were narrowing it down. One name had a nickname next to it and FIL came in and started making fun of that name. I told him to stop or leave. Long story short, that's DDs name and we only ever call her by that nickname.

DH asked if his Christmas present could be to name the baby. Both of my boys now have "T" names (Thomas and Trevor) and I kinda want a new letter. DD is Mallory.

Emmett James is the top of our list right now. I will probably pick another name and see which he looks like. James will be the middle name no matter what as it is FIL name. N has my dad's name as his middle name. I'm INCREDIBLY picky about boys names, so finding a second name is going to be tough. Emmett is a great name. I agree. Boy names are really hard!! We went with not super common names but "real" ones.

Last time H and I agreed on a boy name early on, then found out we were having a girl and it took forever to come up with a girl name we both loved. We didn't even actually discuss it this time, but once we found out we are having a boy, both of us have been referring to him by this name. It's a family name on H's side - Guy Alexander. I think it's classic and strong and I love it. My MIL is over the moon that we are using her father's name, she keeps mentioning how proud he would be if he were still here.

Same. 3 girl names on the whiteboard and not named for 24 hours! Lol nurses were voting on their pick!

We went with not super common names but "real" ones. Yes, and I also have criteria the name must fit. Like it has to be multi syllable because his last name is one syllable. It can't be too popular or old fashioned. I'm picky about nicknames so I usually navigate towards names that have limited ones or none. Emmett has been on our radar, as well as Everett or Elliott. My husband is not an Elliott fan and we both agree Emmett is easier to say than Everett. We are not set I stone on an E name, it just has worked out that way. N's other name was going to be Colin and Colin isn't even an option this time around. And we are absolutely team tell no one the name in advance. We don't need opinions other than our own.

+1 to short last name issues. And I love the name Cora but it is too close to our last name.
We aren't sharing names, but have said if it's a boy it will be a Br name because most of the men in H's family are Br.
Boy is 100% Brendan David.
Girl is still TBD. I love Amelia Rose but it's like #7 on the popular list. I also like Hannah and Catherine with the middle name Rose (my middle name) and the name Lydia Mae (grandma and MIL are both L first names and Mae middle name).
We'all probably take a list of names to the hospital for girls too.

Not even close. We have a "shortlist" of 20 names or so I'd like to avoid super popular names and it needs to work in both languages, which can be a challenge. So far, it seems we like rather short names and names that end in "a". I would like to use something a little bit French sounding as H's last name already represents his side of things.

Being a teacher sucks too because I have some names I really like but have a negative connection to because of a student and now I just can't do that name.

We do not even have a list at this point. Everything I like, MH hates, or vice versa. I might have to resort to buying a baby name book or something.
If anyone has a girl name they aren't using, please send it my way. 😄

sarahandben108, Elliot is my DD full name. I really like gender neutral names and like Riley and Harper for a boy, but they're very popular girls names right now. I also really like nicknames for babies/kids that can "grow up" with them.

BlahBlahGinger , there area ton of baby name lists on Google, no need to buy a book. Norah and Parker were at the top of my girls' name list before I found out we're having a boy.

Thanks, kensie5226 and Waffle! I love the name Norah- it's one I haven't suggested to MH yet because I don't want him to shoot it down. 😬 I also love Eleanor and Charlotte, but there are so many of them lately, and I'm not sure if I should take popularity into account. I have a super popular name for girls born in the 80s, and it never really bothered me, but I find myself gravitating to less popular options, so maybe subconsciously it does? Lol

BlahBlahGinger, same here. I'm cool with somewhat popular names, but mine was in the top ten for several years running and there were like 15 of us with the same name in my graduating class. Spoiler: my name isn't Kensie.

Waffle, yeah. I've always loved the name Oliver, but I know about 7 of them right now. Very surprising.

On the flip side my nephew's name is like #3 in popularity for the year he was born and my sister DGAF, she loved the name.

*whispers* My name is Sarah. And I went to school with 3 in my class of 120. I was always known by my name and last initial. I'm trying hard not to have that happen to my kids.

belle0720 - those are all so glamorous! they fit wonderfully with your daughter's name daystardreams - are you going to shorten to Gus or keep it long? Very cute. babydsmama - Elise is so pretty, and so versatile as a middle name. ldubhawksfan - I like Theodore a lot, and I think it goes really well with Cora. rooskie - My BIL just had a Brendan, and I love it. Handsome but rare these days.

I was holding out on no middle name (since we're hyphenating the kid's last name) but my husband finally wore me down. There's a family name that is used as all of the kids' middle names in his generation and he was dying to pass it on. So, our kid will have a last-name as middle name, and then two last names hyphenated, and will basically just sound like a total pretentious asshole. Sorry, kiddo! I'd rather not put the family name here, but: it's the name of a very famous brand of soup Girl will be: Marion Boy is between: Victor or Wallace (Wally)

I've always been a huge fan of Georgiana (Georgie as a NN). Also for girls Bridget, Ingrid, and Gretchen. Since I'll never have a girl I'll pass the names on to someone else. 😜

typo31, MH didn't have a middle name when we got married so we BOTH took my maiden name as a middle name and both kids will have it as well. That part is easy

sarahandben108 & typo31 - we have so many BR names already taken, but absolutely no one has guessed Brendan so I think it's not too popular, but not hard to pronounce and fairly professional. I keep imagining names at the top of a resume.

Do the likes mean you think the name isn't too outdated?! Haha Theodore is making a comeback! Not outdated at all. This ldubhawksfan. I know a bunch of Theodores - including one of Lily's besties, who is a Teddy. I also love the name Theodora for a girl - it was on our short list with Lily, and would remain on our short list if we weren't pretty set on using the runner-up name from Lily here.

BlahBlahGinger , I'm now wondering if we have the same first name. I'm also an uber-popular 80s name. It's part of, but not the only reason, that Lily is a Liliana and not just Lily. Gives her a little more flexibility in case she doesn't want to be Lily Initial. Edited to add, she usually refers to herself as Lily but occasionally will say "Not Lily, Li-li-ah-na" and when you ask her her name, replies, Liliana, so I'm glad she seems to enjoy being able to use both already. It also cracks me up bc I think everything she does is hilarious and adorable.
