Nugget's current book obsession is Aliens Love Underpants and pointing out peoples' underwear (really just mine and J's when we are in the bathroom), and it got me thinking about all the terms we use for what we wear under our pants (Are they regional? Cultural? Both?), so what do you call them?

We now call them underpants courtesy of Dinosaurs Love Underpants. I used to say underwear.

Also I apparently need to get Dinosaurs Love Underpants, too. She calls Aliens Love Underpants the "pants" book and insists on pointing to all the underpants on the inside covers so I can say what color/pattern they are.

We say undies/underwear.
I have an aversion to the word panties.

Nothing yet because both kids are still in diapers (potty training is the worst), but I'll probably call them underwear.

It's just never come up I guess. I thought that is what this thread was about, maybe I misread. In normal daily conversation I say underwear.

I have a British friend who calls them pants and she said that it was so weird for her when she moved to the States and everyone would make references to their pants (that she would call trousers).

Also, in England, "Fanny" is not a word for butt, but rather a word for vulva/vagina etc. Makes Fanny packs sound all kinds of interesting...

Skivies. Or undies. Or underwear.

In normal daily conversation I say underwear. I guess I assumed it was just about what we generally call them. To anyone. Also it didn't occur to me that one would have different words for them to their kids versus to... anyone else.

I would say I'm more likely to say Underwear to an adult and Underpants or Undies to a kid (or a close friend).

I just bought J new underwear at Target yesterday. He was lovingly carrying them through the store and using his Loud Voice to ask me if I liked his new underpants. I think they'll be underpants for me forever now because it's a fun word.

Normally undies but sometimes skivies to lovingly tease DH since he hates that word.
