I've been highlighting in shrill and I'd like to post a hat about it if anyone is interested. I'm interested! I just finished the Dan Savage part last night and I loved her last paragraph or two there.

Jeremy scahill's podcast is also worth listening to I like Scahill but he has a bizarre level of trust in Julian Assange.

Yes. DC. Hes not without his "quirks",( and possibly that is a huge understatement) but overall a good listen. I started by listening to Democracy Now! and Amy Goodman for years, and thus came to Scahill. Sometimes her relentless opposition to well, everything gets tedious... but overall her message of not taking anything for granted is well placed. She directs her attention to whats wrong with democrats as well. and while I find my self longing for the traditional mismanagement of yore, she was first in my eyes, with well placed criticism of the democratic machine. Lately Ive been searching more for that thread of hope, rather than the blowtorch of angry critique. But maybe Ive just sold out? I have many friends much less moderate than I, who I feel are simply burning out. I wonder, if we manage to save a few of our basic human values and some legislation in place to protect them- will we have the wearwithall to continue to fight the good fight and keep the feet to the fire? Im dishearted by throwing anti choice " democrats" into the mix. I especially look forward to good podcasts and recommendations for books to keep my head in the game.

I do not know Hartmann. I will give a listen. Our local NPR station is having a favorite interviewer of mine retire after 44 years, so Ive been catching up on her programs and listening live to catch her last shows. After that- I'll check him out.

I have been reading, "Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman." I really like it. There are different chapters with a focus on a different famous woman. I just finished Hillary Clinton's chapter (too shrill).

I would like to add Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. I second this. And if you guys ever get a chance to hear him speak, it's worth your effort. He is an amazing speaker.

So many great suggestions! I just read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and I thought it was brilliant. I second this also. This is on my short list of best books I've read in recent years, especially High if we're only looking at best fiction.

I'm trying to decide if I should read A People's History of the United States or Lies My Teacher Told Me. Thoughts?

So not a purely political book, but I just finished The Radium Girls, and it was fantastic! I highly recommend it.

Ok, someone help me with A Colony in a Nation. I just read it, and I kinda felt like it was all over the place. I didn't feel like he made his real, tangible point about our system leveling down and being so punitive until the last 15ish pages. There were elements of that in the book, but I guess I didn't know until the end that that was the real point he was trying to make. I also felt like the white fear argument was not well-integrated into the book. It was just there, as was the discussion of ticketing in Ferguson. I don't know, I guess it wasn't nearly as coherent as I would have liked. It skipped around to a lot of different topics without telling me where it was going. Maybe I was trying to read it too much like an academic paper??

Not politics, but journalism and social justice related. I had never heard the story of Nellie Bly. She wanted to be a journalist when women were relegated to society or fashion columns. An editor told her that he would give her a column if she could get herself admitted to an insane asylum and write about her experience. It's a horrifying account of the conditions in asylums in the late 19th century, and a profile of one bad-ass woman and journalist. Ten Days a Madwoman:The Daring Life and Turbulent Times of the Original "Girl" Reporter, Nellie Bly

I just got The People Are Going To Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore: A Story of American Rage by Jared Yates Sexton. It just came out this month and looks super interesting. He writes about his observations as a journalist on the 2016 campaign trail. Lots of good reviews, so I'm ready to hunker down with it.

I have to finish The Earth Shall Weep first, though. It's fascinating and deep, but a little bit of a slog, if I'm honest.

shadesofgold was it you that suggested the book Dream City? I just finished it. Very interesting. Barry voters kinda reminded me of trump voters. There was so evidence that Barry did anything to help the government and ward 7 and 8 kept voting for him because they felt connected to him.

Also, I lurk a fb group for ward 8 to see current going ons and they still speak of him as a god. They call him mayor for life etc. I have no doubt he'd win ward 8 if he were alive today.

I can't remember how explicitly the book says this, but it really seems to have been based in the fact that he brought black power to a black city that hadn't had that before. And even though he and his government were corrupt, he was seen as doing what he needed to do for the people. Did you know he went back to serve on city council until he died? Like it was nothing.

I read Missoula: Rape and Justice in a College Town by Jon Krakauer earlier this year and it is similar to many books on this list in that it is incredibly difficult to stomach but also important to know about. Especially with DeVos working for more protections for the "falsely accused victims" and less for rape survivors. I felt like it was one of the more timely books I read this year.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I've added SO many books to my wishlist!

Hey guys, it's September 12, are we reading What Happened, or what?
I just downloaded it. I have not yet listened to the bonus Pod interview with Hillary, but I have read and/or heard a lot of advance reviews and I am pretty excited to read this. Come read it with me.

I just got it today and plan on reading tonight. I read the author's note waiting at pick up and it made me tear up. This is going to be rough, I think.
