I have seen a lot of good book recs flying around here lately and thought it might be helpful to have one place to keep track of them all. Share your politics, current events, social justice, etc book recs here.

Partially to troll @blanche I am going to highly recommend A Tale of Two Cities as a really timely story of political upheaval, revenge, class warfare, transformations, and the resilience of the human spirit.

The Hate U Give- it's young adult fiction but great I'll second this one. I could not put it down, and it gave me a lot to think about.

Hey! Jumping back in after a crazy work summer— I'm a huge fan of Rebecca Solnit, particularly "Hope in the Dark"

I'm currently reading An American Sickness by Elizabeth Rosenthal. It's pretty detailed so healthcare interest is probably necessary but it's a deep dive into how we got where we are today re: a messed up healthcare system.

I very much enjoyed Al Franken's new book, Giant of the Senate. For you audiobook fans- he reads it.

I feel like I've pushed this book before, but Charlie Crist's book, The Party's Over was an eye opening look at how the Tea Party and the extreme right took over the GOP by someone who was part of the Republican Party and moved to the Democratic party. It is slightly self promotional at times because he was gearing up for a run at an office, but the entire time I was reading it, I thought "This guy doesn't sound like a Republican at all," and yet, at the time he started, he was. Now he sounds like a conservative Democrat, which tells you how far things have shifted.

So many great suggestions! I just read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and I thought it was brilliant.

This happened near where I grew up. I did not learn about it until I left for college and one of my teachers told the story.

I just started reading the new Al Franken book last night and it is quite good! I normally don't read a lot of non-fiction, so I was impressed by how much of a page turner it is.

Has anyone read the Bannon book yet?
Also, a throwback but Game Change, about the 2008 Presidential election was a good read.

I actually get confused anytime Steve Schmidt is on TV and I realize he is not actually Woody Harrelson. I'm sure the book had so much more detail and explanations.

Jeremy Scahill's book about Blackwater is infuriating but packed with important information. I also have Insane Clown President by Matt Taibbi on my list. This is another one that will fill you with rage but I think it's a really, really important read. Kill Chain discusses the US drone strike program and its use in extrajudicial assassinations overseas.
