Decorating help - empty space in front of fireplace.

So our living room is really long. It was originally a living room+den but the previous owners opened it all up. Now, we have this empty space in front of the fireplace that I don't know what to do with. I thought maybe a giant ottoman or two chairs with a small table but I cant decide. The rug there isn't staying. It was just an old one that fits the space for now. We have some time as this will be our Christmas present from the inlaws.

The first photo is from our entryway. Stairs to the far left, back on the left is a doorway to the kitchen. Second photo is from the dining room.

What's the layout now? I can't tell what you have at the far end.

I feel like I would want to put a couch in front of the fireplace. And put the table you have against the wall behind it so there's a clear path behind it to the doorways.

Eventually we will add a love seat under the windows where the recliner is and repurpose the recliner to the office/guest room.

I'd almost leave it decently clear for now with 3 littles running around. Maybe a little kiddie table in front of the fireplace for them to sit and play/eat/whatever. Perhaps an armchair near the fireplace as a cozy reading nook?

That's an interesting thought. I didn't even think of a couch. Once the girls go down for nap, I'll start looking for some inspiration pics online.

Right now, it's used as a runway for E and A with their walkers+our diaper changing area. Lol we do have a play room so I'd prefer keeping as much in there as possible.

The fireplace looks cozy so I'd want something comfy in front of it- maybe an oversized loveseat with a console table behind it. Something that you sink into.

Yes to this if a couch is too big. With a couple of end tables for drinks and an ottoman.

And I'd suggest mounting the tv on the wall.

Not for the whole falling on kids problem, but because little fingers love to touch it and push it to see.

When C and E started using ours as a touch screen, my husband was very motivated to get it mounted above their reach.

Yes as someone who's 55 inch TV was recently broken by their toddler, I highly recommend wall mounting.

Ouch.  C likes to throw things (we are working on it), so we could still end up with a broken TV.   We jokingly suggested getting a mounted wire cage for it so that we wouldn't have issues.

Yes, it's on our to do list. My dad is going to do it for us when they visit in a few weeks for the twins' birthday.

I would do half living room half play area, unless you already have a play area. But then I might do it anyway just to keep the clutter away from the sitting area and because apparently my kids need to play where I am.
