How many bags of candy is enough for Halloween?

I usually start with 5 small bags of reeses about early October.

After eating most of those in early October then i grab 4 more bags usually not reeses the week of Halloween. Ususlly add glowsticks of some kind.

I start the night giving out 2 pieces and a glowstick to the smallest kids that come. Followed by later in the evening getting stingy if it's a busy night.

We used to get hundreds of kids coming on trailers of kids on straw bales. Then the kids aged out and we had years with 2 or 3 kids only.
Now it's ramping back up.

I buy one or two Costco sized candy bags hoping we get trick or treaters, but in the last 8 Halloweens at my house, the most we've had is maybe 6 in one night. I stick a bowl out for kids to grab and we go to my sisters neighborhood which is wildly busy and so much fun for the kids. I always dress up with the kids, my and DD are giraffes and DS is a banana this year.

How many bags of candy is enough for Halloween? I haven't given candy out in a few years because we're always out with the kids, but it depends on the size of the bag.

How many pieces do you think is good enough to give out? 2-3 depending on size, but I usually start handing out more as it gets later.

How late do you usually stay up giving candy? I try to be done by 8ish.

Do you dress up even if only to answer the door? Nope. I don't think DS is dressing up this year, so he may give out candy. My girls are going to be a zombie bride and zombie cheerleader.

This is our first Halloween at the new house so I'm not sure how many trick-or-treaters we'll get. We're in town but there are better streets nearby so I feel like it won't be too popular of a location but we'll be prepared just in case.

Big kid is going to be a dragon for the second year in a row (but not the same dragon because of course not) and little kid was going to be a ghost but then changed his mind to Spider Man and then we settled on Ghost Spider.

I usually buy 2 Costco bags of candy.

We set out a bowl on our porch with a sign that says please take 2, because we are out with our own kids walking the neighborhood. When we come home, I’ll top up the bowl, but leave it out, because dogs. I’ll pull it in and turn out the lights around 8-8:30.

Kid 1 is undecided, she’s trying to do a coordinated costume with her friends.
Kid 2 is a ghoul with the ghost face mask.

This is entirely neighborhood dependent. Pre-Covid we could was blow through 10+ bags (back when it was cheap). Now I get one Costco sized bag and when it’s done we’re done.

At the beginning 2 pieces, middle of the evening I am giving out handfuls and then dumping whatever is left to a lucky teen when I am done.


How late do you usually stay up giving candy?


8:45/9 pm is around the time it fades out.

We hang out in our driveway. Sometimes we dress up. Sometimes we don’t. I usually put the dogs in a costume.

Is anyone else totally over Halloween this year? I don’t want to buy candy and then sit outside with mosquitos to give it out. I would love to leave the teens in charge and go out to a nicer dinner and drinks.

They are not going out. The 17YO will probably have to work and if not he’ll just walk around with friends. The 14YO is over it and thanks to braces he can’t eat the candy he really likes.

Were on a short side street so don't get much foot traffic. I usually just get a bag of assorted candy and leave out a bowl and that's plenty

Me& H always dress up and walk with the kids. I would love for one year to be able to dress up and sit on my porch and hand out candy but we don't get enough people 😫

I love Halloween though so we usually dress up a few times for parades/haunted houses/etc

I'm not really OVER halloween except it's always a thing with dil's birthday trying to make it sorta special for her as well as fun for grandson.

But if you are over it and want to go out to dinner, put a bowl of candy out and go to dinner!!

I aim for 2 pieces per kid, but give more or less later in the evening depending on how busy it is.

So, I just get a smallish bag plus whatever we want to eat.

I like to at least wear a Halloween themed shirt.

My 6th grader is not ToT’ing, but he’s dressing up as a traffic cone. Lol.

We do full size bars. This is the first house where we have had a decent # of ToTs. This was literally a childhood dream for me; I absolutely love seeing the kids’ reactions. I usually buy 80 plus a pack of non-candy options. We typically get 80ish ToTs hence that #

Just 1 since they’re full size! For Trunk or Treats, I usually do 2 of the smaller pieces.

We shut things down at 9 or whenever we run out of candy- whichever happens first.

Yes, I usually dress up. Sometimes it’s just something I already own though. Last year I handed out candy while MH walked around with my daughter.

My 9 yo is going to be a creepy bride. My 16 yo along with the two dogs are going to be flowers. I am rewearing my Hogwarts robe because it’s easy. Not sure if the older teens or MH will dress up this year.

I think last year I did two big Sam’s bags of candy: one chocolate and one non. I will likely need to add another this year as our street has become Halloweentown and is now THE place to go.

2-3 pieces per kiddo. More or less as the night goes on and I assess the supply.

I don’t dress up either way.

DS is going as Ash from Pokemon. His costume just arrived today and it’s adorable.

ETA. We hand out candy until kids stop coming by. I think around 8/8:30 last year.

We live in a small, self-contained neighborhood. I have never answered the door to give out candy, we just put it out on a table on our driveway (mainly because I have 2 dogs that would go crazy and be hard to contain if we answered the door, or bark the ENTIRE time if we kept them outside in our back yard). But everything is always gone when we go out to bring in the bowls, but I suspect it's from people taking what is left at the end of the night. When we've walked around with our kids, our bowls usually still have stuff in them toward the end of our trick-or-treat time, which is 6-8 PM, but then are empty when we go get the bowls at 8:15ish.
We give out full-sized candy bars, small bags of chips, and also put out drinks. I buy the candy bars 1 or 2 packs at a time starting in Sept. I think I have like 8 packs at this point, which should be good (Reese's, KitKat, Snickers, Hershey Bars, Twix), but I might buy some full-sized packs of skittles too if I find those on sale. For the chips, I bought a variety pack of Takis this year because my kids are obsessed, got a good deal on pretzels, and then I'll add whatever bags of chips are left from the multi-packs we buy that no one likes (usually sour cream and onion and Cheetos and sometimes Fritos). My dh and both my kids take a small bag in their lunches almost every day, and they like variety, but there are always some that just don't get eaten, so I put those aside for Halloween. And same with the drinks. My kids like the Ice carbonated flavored water, and I buy multi-packs, but there is 1 flavor in each pack they don't really like, so those get saved to be put out on Halloween (and the neighbor kids love getting drinks when it's unusually warm...we live in an area that has gotten snow on Halloween in the past, but the past few years it's been like 75 degrees on Halloween, so kids often have really warm costumes and then get stupidly hot).

I only dress up if I'm going to a party or something with other adults who are dressing up. When my kids were younger and I'd go around with them, I'd dress up if they wanted me to match their costumes (one year DD was a dalmatian, so I was Cruella, and one year she and her friends were Winnie the Pooh characters, so I was Kanga (the momma) with a stuffed baby Roo in my pouch.

This year DD is going with her bff whose name is Fiona, and Fiona is going to be princess Fiona from Shrek, and DD is going as Lord Farquad. Ds is going with his group of friends, but they haven't decided if they are doing themed costumes yet. My guess is they will all throw something together from what they already have (they are in high school, I will let ds go trick-or-treating until he moves out if he wants to, as long as he dresses up, because I think it's innocent fun).

I hate that my town schedules trick or treating the Sunday before and limits it from 2-5pm. I miss staying out late in the dark and I’m sad my kids will never get to experience that.

I usually put out bowls because I’m out with the kids. My bestie and I dress up. In the past we’ve been cookies and milk, a taco and an avocado, fun stuff like that. Not sure if we’ll do anything this year. DD is going as the bride of Chucky (Tiffany?). I think she just wanted the faux leather jacket and combat boots. DS is some Fortnite thing.

My neighborhood has very little kids, although I think more young families are finally starting to move in. So we haven’t handed candy out here and we’ve been going to a different neighborhood to ToT.

One day I hope there will be enough kids in our neighborhood that it will become more lively. Seems more young families are moving in so, fingers crossed.

DS1 insisted on being a ghost this year, and DS2 is going to be a ghostbuster. DD said she wants to be Limp Bizkit lol.

We’re more rural so don’t get TOT’s. I still leave a bowl of candy out JIC someone’s turns up while we’re out.

A small handful each kid.

I’d stay up until the candy ran out I think.

Depends on the hear.

A witch, Gandalf and yiga clan foot soldier from Zelda.

I usually love Hallowe’en but have barely started costumes. Just not my normal self this year.

We don't get trick or treaters on our busy street with no sidewalks, so no giving out candy for us

We trick or treat with DS in the neighborhood across the street which is very lively. Last year was the first year he went elsewhere but H and I still walked around the neighborhood because it's one of my favorite things. I don't dress up but I do wear a skeleton shirt.


DS last year participated in his friend's dad's haunted house, which is a whole thing. He was a zombie. I think he is doing that again.
Just this week the temps are dropping and the leaves are falling and it's getting just perfect.

We stopped passing out last year because I take DS TOTing, and my mom didn't want to hand out anymore. I just take DS through our neighborhood. I was really hoping he wouldn't want to go this year because he is not a big candy kid and we end up getting rid of a lot, but he still wants to go. We don't get a high volume, so usually one or two of the big bags is fine.

I was dressing up in some sort of matching costume with DS (e.g. he was Sonic, I was Amy) but stopped that this year because money is tighter and I want a different costume for a party. DS wants to be Pikachu this year.

I always just let the kids choose, I don't specify.

I don't know, maybe 9/9:30 is probably when it slows down? I love passing out candy, so I do it as long as it lasts!

Not specifically, but I'm usually already dressed up from taking the kids out. We leave a bowl out while we ToT, then come back & hand out more.

Most important what costumes your kids doing this year? My DD is being our pet bunny, which she's using a cow costume & bunny ears for, because the bunny is black & white. It’s so adorable! DS is being Pikachu. My H & I are being Sully & Mike Wizowski from Monster's Inc. 😁

My friend asked my 3YO what he was going to be for Halloween and he said "Ghost Spider" and my friend couldn't understand it. My friend asked if he could describe it in a different way, and he said "there's no other way to describe it. No one ever listens to me" and sulked away. 😂
