To start: I have done a cursory google here, but because I am not a manicure person, I'd like to get some actual advice.
DD1 is really into getting her nails done lately--the long, acrylic ones--and the powder mani costs 75 bucks a pop in my neighborhood. I am not super interested in spending that kind of money regularly for a 12 year old's nails, so I was wondering if anyone here has had luck with one of those at home kits I see all over insta now. The drugstore ones she has gotten don't stay on her nails at all. I am probably going to use salon manis as a carrot for going to extra math help and getting her grades up, but curious about these for the interim.

There's a lot of really great press ons out these days, could be a good alternative. I've heard good things about the nail glue from Sally beauty supply also. ETA: Reading comprehension fail. You said you've already tried the drugstore ones, but there are folks who make higher end ones that would still be way cheaper than going to the salon.

My 12YO has been begging to get gel nails, and I keep saying no because I can't afford that maintenance. I think you just gave me an idea for Christmas that we can do them at home.

We (ie my DD) had good luck with the Glamnetic brand of press ons. I’ve seen them at Sephora.

Be careful about doing gel at home (polish and extensions), especially for kids. Uncured gel or gel polish on the skin can trigger a severe allergy that makes it impossible to ever use the products again. There's also good info on reddit. www.allure.com/story/gel-nail-polish-allergic-reaction

I'm not sure, but it's unsanitary at salons because most places have clients dip their fingers into communal jars. I've gone back to regular polish since my old place wrecked my nails with gel, polygel, and too much e filing.

Hi! I gave myself an allergy from at home gel-it is absolutely not worth it and I almost lost a few fingernails.
Dip does not cause the same reaction. I do it at home, and at this point have gotten pretty good. There’s a pretty steep learning curve, and depending on prep a potential for overfiling the natural nail, but it overall has been a great option for me. For a kid your DDs age I would recommend possibly learning together just to be sure she’s taking care of her natural nails

My 13 year old really likes the nice press-ons. We get them from Amazon, just look at the ratings and get some that are highly reviewed.she wears them multiple times, just reapplies the glue.

My 14 year old DD was using press-ons and nail glue from Amazon and one of her fingers got infected under the nail and she ended up losing the nail. It is growing back, but taking forever. It could have just been a fluke, but it’s scared her and me off all nail glue. She’s just using regular polish and doing them herself for now. She’s not happy about it, but I don’t know what other option to try.
I was already not allowing her to do gel because it wrecked my nails. But now hearing the allergy thing it’s a definite no. I have spent months trying to strengthen my nails and not doing any kind of polish at all. I guess I’m going back to regular polish as well.
