This actually funny. My kid's high school is having Spirit Week soon and one theme is to bring your stuff to school in "anything but a backpack". It has potential to be really funny and creative.
Any ideas? I suggested a golf bag but that didn't happen
*no grocery carts and nothing stolen

You can get those large orange buckets from Home Depot for like $5
Everything tied up in a handkerchief on the end of a stick like an old-timey wanderer?

What about a cooler? Specifically the travel size ones, but the really big ones on wheels could be funny. I've seen some that you can pull like luggage.
Or what about those pull wagons everyone takes to sporting events?

Our school did this last year. Toy shopping cart and cozy coupe were the funniest. Suitcase was pretty popular.

This sounds like chaos. What about a box on a dolly? A front baby carrier? A car seat baby carrier? A mesh grocery bag? A flat or shelved cart? A barrel drum on a drum dolly? They say no grocery carts, but what about one of those little kid plastic grocery carts? A pair of jeans sewn shut?

Does your kid walk to school, or get driven? I only ask because maybe something like a microwave would be original, but not practical unless you took him in the car.
