The shooter in custody is only 14 years old. This is SICKENING. I saw the breaking news earlier today when it first broke and I've been holding my breath since. DS1 will be 13 in April and we live in a very red county and I'm sick. I don't even know how this is our world anymore. I haven't followed too closely the details that have been released, but I am curious how/where/when/why this child had access, what type of weapon, etc. Not that it matters now that everything has been said and done but I think as more info comes out I can ONLY HOPE it may continue to drive change.

The shooter in custody is only 14 years old. JFC. We are failing children in this country. Not just the access to guns and the refusal to do even the most basic common sense things to keep guns away from kids, but also, there are always signs and nothing was done to help this child before it got to the point where shooting other people seemed like the only viable solution.

I hate all of this. I hate that decades later all we can do is shrug our shoulders and say meaningless platitudes. I hate that we our failing our kids by giving our kids the message that this is normal and nothing will change. I hate that a 14 year old felt this was their only choice. 14!! Most of all I hate that my own reaction to this is one of numbness.

Between this and NC, it will really put those states in play to turn blue. And FL has abortion rights and legalizing marijuana on the ballot. Speaking on Fox News Channel’s “The Story with Martha MacCallum” on Tuesday, Kennedy said, “We’re trying to get off the ballot in all the states where I might be a spoiler and cause harm to President Trump.”
These morons always say the quiet part out loud.

The school from today's shooting is 15 minutes from me. It's the counter next to mine. My cousin graduated from there a few years ago. One of our friends is on the SWAT team. It's really bad. Our schools were on lockdown until they confirmed they had the shooter. I just don't even have any more words about these situations. I feel like I've said them all. ♥️♥️♥️

I had a mass shooting nightmare a few nights ago and when I woke up it took me so long to fall back asleep when I realized it was probably my subconscious reacting to school starting this week. It really just feels like a matter of time.

I go back and forth on this one regularly. Our district is doing the pouches Dd is supposed to leave hers in a big wall pouch thing in the hall by the office. It’s literally open to anyone in the building so I already was iffy. She does turn it off and leaves it in her book-bag pocket so she would have access if needed but it isn’t on as a distraction I'm so sorry. I started my response above and got distracted and didn’t realize it actually posted 🤦♀️ All the high school (and I think middle school as well but I really have not paid much attention because we don't have anyone there this year) got the locking magnetic pouches on their first day. They have to show the locked bag to get into school. There are a bunch of unlocking stations outside the building at the end of the day, and then a couple for kids after clubs/lifting. Athletes can get theirs unlocked before athletic events or practice, but the basic rule is no phones/watches/ear buds inside the school. My oldest complained about it before the year started but I really haven't heard much since. I don't mind on the one hand because she did used to text me the most random/unnecessary things in the middle of the day last year. She can email us via her Chromebook if needed but they have those pretty locked down. I know there are tons of work arounds but she doesn't care that much. I have heard there's been very good compliance with the rule, and some kids just don't bother bringing their phones at all. Teachers have said they haven't gotten push back or arguing from kids so I guess that's good too. I do still have thoughts about not being able to get in contact with her during an emergency situation, but it probably comes more from a place of trying to have some feelings of control in a situation that is not really controllable.

I also heard an 8 year old shot himself in a parked car this week when his mom ran into the store. So this week is going great for kids accessing guns.
I hate it here.

My city has had the highest homicide rate for under 18 the last 2 years and none were school shooting related. The young killing the young is so so bad

One of my former students is receiving his sentencing today for convicted murder (used a gun, of course). He's 17.
Two students and two teachers are the deceased from today's shooting and it's just gut wrenching. Today was the first day of school for my kids and me and it's such a stark reminder of the world we live in to have my first day end with a butt load of notifications about a mass school shooting. Just makes me wonder when it'll be me or my kids. They had the emergency evacuation due to a threat last year and it was so terrifying, and it turned out not to be credible after the fact. It all just feels so inevitable.

The gun culture is so rampant now. So many unsecured guns around kids. And like angelashly said it's also non school violence. When I was in high school there were absolutely massive fistfights and and shit. A kid I knew was beaten to death, a girl my sister went to school with was stabbed at a carnival. But no guns.

Speaking of kids and phones, my 7th grader came home today and told me her gym teacher takes all of their phones and locks them up. She said not everyone turns them in though. The crazy part is that the normal rule is off (silent/DND) and put away, not to be seen, or they will get taken. You would think gym class would be the class where it would be the most challenging to be sneaky with a phone…. kids can be more sneaky in a classroom behind their books, and at their desks. It makes less sense to lock them up while they are in gym class, running laps around the track and playing soccer. I’m not sure I follow the logic there, but maybe I’m wrong.
FWIW I am totally in agreement with their current rule. They can’t have them out between classes or in lunch or anything. Hers stays in her bookbag, but her bookbag goes with her from class to class, so it’s great for her. But I don’t get the gym class rule to lock them up.

Locker rooms and phones never lead to anything good.

On a lighter note, this is hilarious. This is AI right? Also, there is no apostrophe in Walz. It wouldn't be possessive 🫠

ETA - I just told my daughter about this reasoning and she was like, well that makes sense, except they take them after people come out of the locker rooms 🙄

My kid's high school takes up phones at every class period and you get them the last 5min. They are allowed to have them at lunch and free period.
I feel better knowing our HS has metal detectors. I know they are controversial and plenty of people are against them.

There is one woman where you can’t see her little finger and they have latched onto that, but I think it’s a stretch. Yes, that’s the joke (about the punctuation). They look like fools.

Maybe? In FL stated the other day that he 100% disagrees with Walz and would vote for trump, etc. But this is the first I'm seeing about other family members. I think it's a hilarious grammar fail and I'm all for it

Okay but why was I allowed to watch Unsolved Mysteries every week? I used to practice stop, drop, and roll in my bedroom. Because the biggest threat taught to us in school was a fire. Wait, that and things thrown at a train ricocheting back at us, causing death and dismemberment. It's easy for me to say kids don't need cell phones in school and I used to call my mom from the office or cafeteria pay phone, but my mom assumed I was completely safe at school every day. I understand teachers wanting them banned and parents wanting their kids to have the ability to text during a lockdown. I don't have the answers.

The quick rug sweep that was Britney Mahomes liking pro trump posts and digging in was just wow to me but also I wasn’t surprised. How someone with not only daughters but biracial daughters and a husband who is BIPOC could vote for trump should surprise me but again I’m not surprised. I am disappointed
