So my mom is taking my youngest to Alaska on Friday and Delta is still struggling to get back to normal after the IT debacle last week. They can't get their schedules set up with employees/crew.
What are the airports like? Is it still a mess, especially Delta?
She's considering booking a whole new flight with AA so as not to ruin the whole trip with connecting flights etc.
Any insight is appreciated, she's torn on what to do.
*an AA ticket is refundable up to 24hrs after booking

We flew Delta on Sunday after our original flight got canceled the day before. The Sunday flight had so many delays and we almost didn't take off because co-pilot was dangerously close to his hours and the new flight attendants couldn't get put on as crew. Had we not made the Sunday flight we would have been on a Tuesda7 flight. The help was so bad - hours on hold.
Needless to say, book on a different airline if possible.

I’m flying Delta on Saturday. Detroit to Washington. Fingers crossed it’s alright. It was booked on points so I don’t know what to do about that one.

A friend of mine has been stuck at the airport in MN since yesterday. They can't get a flight, hotel in the area, or a rental car, and even if they could, Delta can't find their luggage or checked car seats. She, her H, and their four children slept on the floor of the airport last night. It's a nightmare, and I feel terrible for them.

Everything I read today seems to indicate that Delta is a total mess but everyone else is back to normal. I think them changing flights is the best plan.

I’m actually sitting in the Austin airport right now (started in Raleigh, heading to Oakland). I’m flying southwest and have had no issues. The airport is packed but not sure if that has to do more with summer travel vs the issue.

I flew home from Heathrow yesterday via American Airlines. It was a debacle. I am unclear if it was Heathrow-specific or American Airlines, but their check in and baggage belt system went down while we were in the line to check in. It had happened the previous day, as well, which resulted in our flight being moved from Sunday to yesterday. Yup - 21 hour delay!
I wasn’t upset by the 21 hour delay (yay extra day in London!) but the baggage belt/check in system going down nearly cost us our flight home as we had to check in, get thru security and to the gate on time. We were the McCallisters trying to make their plane to Paris.

This is exactly the situation she's worried about, and the domino effect could ruin the whole trip. Last time we sat at the Delta gate for 3 hours until the pilots got there and the everyone cheered when he came through. |

I love Delta and fly them almost exclusively but their rewards are getting more and more difficult to use/redeem. However, it used to be that Skymiles redemptions were fairly cancellable/refundable outside of the 24 hr mark. I would at least be peeking at Google Flights to see your alternative options. |

Had a Monday flight on delta that was cancelled. Rebooked on American Airlines with no problem.

Holy shit it’s hot in PHX. Our flight was delayed then we had to deplane because the crew needed to re-secure the plane. But it was great otherwise

Thanks for all the anecdotes, it was very helpful. They did buy new tickets on another airline and flew out yesterday. Glad to hear Delta is finally back on track.
My mom cxld her her Delta tickets 2-3days beforehand, she also got fully refunded. I think it's because she used her Delta Amex?
