I’m thinking about upgrading to a Garmin watch because my Apple Watch battery is dying a fast death. Do any of you use a Garmin for your day to day main watch? I want something with a long battery life that will buzz on my wrist when I get a text message as far as smartwatch features go. Then obviously using it to track my runs and fitness activities, ideally with a map showing where I went (with my phone is fine), HR monitoring, and really just the basic features that I use now. I don’t know which Garmin to consider though and the internet is overwhelming. I have a garmin forerunner 45 (I think my model is basically the 55 now). It covers all of the things you are interested in, and I find that it accurately maps my runs (even in the middle of nowhere).

Good morning. It was tough waking up early this morning so I gave myself grace to sleep until the last possible minute. I have a 20 min yoga on deck for after work. Then I am attending a different run club tonight so I should be able to fit in a 5k.
Food: B: ST freezer breakfast burrito S: cottage cheese with strawberries L:TBD D: ST Taco skillet and side salad

I ended up taking down Christmas, deep cleaning the living room, breaking down boxes and then moving our old tv and stand out with h so I ended up “working out” but I did something to my back because it is stiff today.
I’m going to do some stretching and plan the rest of the week out and get it loaded

The VA3 was pretty good for daily stuff and fine for runs on pavement but kind of sucked for trail runs (like .1 short each mile, which adds up quickly!) and I had to charge it every few days. I wear my 255 daily and the battery life has been so much better. I think I go about a week between charges? Apparently it has a map option to set up a route for a run and get navigation. I haven't tried this but it looks handy for new routes. There are higher end ones but I'm a cheap bastard and couldn't really justify buying anything higher (as in, I wouldn't have used all the functions). The garmin site does have the option to compare models, including just showing the differences. I found that super helpful!

AmyG can you check if your insurance has any discounts or would cover a step tracking device? I just moved from a fit bit after like 8 years (bittersweet) and the most basic model of the that is what I would recommend. Unless you want to go really low tech and do a pedometer. I haven't seen my insurance cover much of anything. It's a fairly high deductible plan but I'll poke around on the website again. Basic fit bit like an inspire 3? Is your son still in college? If he has insurance through the school there's a good chance that he can get one at a discount. The university system I work in had a big push a few years ago on fitbits and we got the basic one for like $20.

30 minute reset ride with Denis. Great music. Good mix of hard intervals and easy riding. I need to get a stretch session in tonight, and if I’m really ambitious, a short strength.

I also use the HRM-Pro chest strap for workouts. The Forerunner sounds like what you want, you don't have to have the strap to use it. I know it has notifications, can't' recall about maps but it has GPS so I would assume so.

I don’t want to switch between multiple watches ideally, but I obviously already have the Apple Watch. So I could use that for day to day and a Garmin for activities, since that’s what drains the power, but if I could get away with one for everything I would.

Do you need a chest strap HR monitor with any of the watches? Is it just more accurate?

I just already had the VA4, bought a Forerunner because I wanted more data than the VA4 gives, but the VA4 was still good so I wear both.

Do you need a chest strap HR monitor with any of the watches? Is it just more accurate? It's more accurate. Chest straps are the most accurate. I've been wearing an arm band style one for a while now because my 920XT doesn't have wrist based HRM because it's ancient and sometimes I just don't want to wear a chest strap. When I run outside, if I wear my VA4 I will just use the wrist based HRM though.

Last night was pouring rain when I got home so I did some miles on the Tread to a 30 minute rock run with Logan, followed by a 5 minute core with Adrian.
I really like Logan, but y’all I can NOT with his moustache right now. He reminds me of my dad circa 1983, it’s too hilarious. Please someone make this trend go away so I can take men seriously.

I was just browsing new classes and was chuckling with his new look. I just can’t also. I think maybe for people who grew up after the 80s it isn’t as cringe as it is for us 70s/80s kids.

I did OTF for 3 days in a row, and I am taking a rest day today. It feels nice lol. My abs are super sore and every time I have to cough, it hurts. 😭 I’m not sick or anything, so at least it’s not frequent.
I made a couple new LET recipes (from her new cookbook) over the last couple days. The Thai curry noodles with beef and the minestrone soup with chicken. Both are great!

AmyG do you truly just need to start with the step tracking? Because it sounds like even just a cheap pedometer that you wear would work for now if the fitbits are out of your price range.

Youngest says univ does drawings for fit bits and things like that for those who go to football games. He doesn't go to football games. Oldest is online school and doesn't really count for univ giveaways usually but he will look around.

Amazon has a few pedometers with good ratings less than $25 A lot of insurance companies will cover them, as someone else mentioned. Doesn’t hurt to ask (or Google)

I spent all day yesterday in bed, playing “allergies or virus”. Negative on a home test today so 🤷🏻♀️ but now I’m all dry and gross feeling.
I went to a gyn visit this morning for the first time since moving 😬 (2021) and good news, anemia is better/resolved and I also liked the Dr so that’s nice.
Anyway still feel sluggish and not great so I’m just pushing everything back this week and instead of deadlifts/bench today I did treadmill. Kept it a brisk walk but went for an hour so got almost 3 miles.

One day. It took one day for the return to work exhaustion to hit me. There was no getting up for me this morning. Sleeping in and late nights and no day to catch up after NY did me no favors.
Anyways, I squeezed in a quick workout after school.
20 minute interval run with Hannah 5 minute standing core with RK 5 minute stretch with Adrian
Yoga tonight, shooting for 30 minutes.
Food was good, minus a handful of Hershey kisses today.
Back up and at it tomorrow.

Tonight was a 3 mile run for me. Consistency is definitely helping me. I’ve been able to chip away at my pace while keeping my heart rate down which feels amazing. I followed it up with 10 min ALW, 10 min core, 10 min barre, 10 min hips focus flow.

2023 was kind of a shitty year for me. There were a couple of months in the middle of the year that were especially awful and I was stressed and anxious and wasn’t eating or taking care of myself well. I lost a bunch of weight but not in a healthy or sustainable way. 0/10 would not recommend. I decided towards the end of the year that I wanted to prioritize me for once and managed to pull out a pretty decent end of the year. At least health and fitness wise. I stayed consistent with my running and other than a hip injury reminding me why I need to have cutback weeks on mileage, I still got out there. I’m setting a goal for 2024 of 750 miles. I think that is super attainable. I would also really like to run my first half marathon this year. For January I’m just aiming for 50 miles. Anything over that is bonus. But I want to have a goal that I can still hit if I only get 3-4 runs in during the week. I want that extra leeway since my hip still isn’t 100% (though it is definitely much better) and also because I know the weather that we’ve been having isn’t going to last forever and it will eventually be negative temps and snowy days. I will say that I have been enjoying my cold weather runs more than I thought I would. Learning how to dress for different temps has made a huge difference and this is the most consistent I’ve ever been during the winter months. Because fuck a treadmill forever. I’m sorry if you love them 🤣 I started 2024 yesterday with a 3 mile run. Followed it up with 10 min ALW, 10 min standing core (I don’t think I’m coordinated enough for those?), 10 min barre, 15 min hip mobility. I always think I'm going to do a standing core for an "easier" core workout, and then keeping up with the sequence of moves, plus weights always gets me. It was the balancing on one leg that killed me. I kept falling over lol.
