I just tried to watch the whole monologue. I couldn't get through it, and I feel kind of bad for the presenter, because it was clear he knew this was going to be kind of a shit show of an opener.

I'm certainly not against comedians taking potshots at rich people in their audience. But at least be funny, not Dane Cook 2.0. You might at least make people laugh.

Honestly, comedy is in a weird place right now. You have to walk a fine line because every single person has a different line of what they will be okay with. Some people are better at laughing at themselves than others. Flip side of that is that many comedians think that they are roastmasters, when they are really being cruel and unfunny.
I don't think comedy, as a whole, has caught up with the changes in society. There are a few that are doing it well, but the old standby of award show comedians was making fun of the actors and actresses and they are fumbling trying to find what replaces that.

I do enjoy roasts, so many of them are done well. I have not enjoyed much comedy at shows like this though

Didn’t the whole internet feud with Kylie and Hailey vs Selena just settle down fairly recently? I could see Kylie thinking if Selena posts a photo with Kylie’s bf, the internet would love to make it into something and reopen that. And if I remember, Kylie came out on the losing end of that whole thing. If it even happened, I could understand that thought process. Don’t be an ass about it though.

Roasts are out but some situations are just outdated and call for a roast like award shows but no one knows how to adapt. I think they should just get rid of the traditional host role for these shows or have it be more of an entertainer that can do songs and skits but…it is what it is.

I also think it just wasn’t a funny joke. The internet (a lot of comedians too) seem to agree he bombed and I’ve seen a lot of award host clips of good digs at people in the audience. It wasn’t like his jokes were overly mean or anything, just bad. If they were actually funny, the reaction prob would have been different.

Kylie 100% came out on the bad end and was again yesterday despite it not even being true or confirmed. The literal “lip reader” said that Selena said HE wouldn’t take a picture with me and the internet aka fans turned it to Kylie said no and she should remember her place because she was there because of her boyfriend and Selena was there because nominated etc. Also you know you are beefing with his girlfriend maybe don’t ask for a picture when she is with him? And I actually like Selena it just seems juvenile

Kelly, Bob’s wife, has a newer podcast about grief and I’ve listened to 3 or 4 episodes now and it’s really good. Her first episode was with Katie Couric and the loss of her husband in 1998 with two young kids at home. It’s called Comfort Food. I think there’s like 10 episodes.

You get away with a whole lot more if your jokes are actually funny!

Jo Koy is not really that funny even in his own standup. He’s kind of cheesy. But him being like “I only got the job 10 days ago, what do you expect” is eye rolly. Like dude, that’s why no one else took the job. Because it wasn’t going to be good for their brand. He’s definitely in the any publicity is good publicity bucket of celebs and that’s fine. But I’ve never really taken him too seriously so this tracks. Like a strong comedian doesn’t just do bad jokes because that’s the gig.

Right, like… 10 days to write good jokes is actually a lot, in our SNL/Daily Show/Twitter society, unless you just suck at writing jokes. 🤷♀️

You can tell how much Bob and her loved each other and how much fun they had together. Also it is endearing to hear about all the support she got from Bob's friends like John Mayer (yes I know he's a tool).

I think there's a lot of really great stuff going on in comedy actually. But the big comedy breakers like Netflix fall back to the easy ratings getters like gervais, Chappelle, Silverman etc.
Comedy is growing beyond some of the more famous comics of the last several decades and we're watching them flail but there are a lot of smaller but significant names producing some really funny content that borders edgy but will probably stand the test of time. Also the comedy at awards shows has to be lame, not for offending celebrities but so people don't turn off the program. It was a miss.
I also think Jo Koy doesn't write for largely white audiences so saying he's not funny is because it's maybe not for you/us/a GG audience. It was def a miscalculation on someone's part and it feels like he's a little thrown under the bus because of the poor fit. Michael Che had a good story arc on insta about it.

And, for the bujo, I am of the opinion that comedy for adults needs to test boundaries. What I don't think is that anybody need laugh out of politeness if a joke falls flat.

To the last point - It blows my mind how more than just Jo had to approve those jokes and the other writers saw the Barbie jokes and said "Yeah, that sounds like it will really land in this current climate!" I'm not sure how those are specifically for a non-white audience but I didn't watch every clip so I don't know if you meant other jokes he made.

I haven't watched the monologue and only going by what has been said here, is it possible that it wasn't written for a man to begin with? Like, could they have been written for a woman & then Jo was actually hired? Would they have hit different if say Tina Fey had said them?

Who knows what kind of writers room he had for that--ive read elsewhere it was largely older white men which...tracks.

The town i live in has a very large Filipino population, and Jo Koy seems really well liked (and i've enjoyed his stuff in the past too). I didn't watch the GG at all, but i personally didn't think the T. Swift thing was funny, only because it's very stale at this point. I can log onto Facebook and see 20 other people making the same joke.

I legit cannot imagine someone like Tina Fey making a joke about women with cellulite and flat feet being "character actors" .... I just don't think she'd agree to say it.

I read the barbie joke and yikes. But again, writers room, stuffy event with celebs, etc. The NFL joke was groan worthy but in a lighthearted way.

If anyone wants to hear peak Jo Koy comedy, check out his Netflix special from LA. He ranges from sleep apnea jokes to talking about his experience with systemic racism in the entertainment world. Really good.
