I haven’t checked in yet this month. My goal for 2024 is 75 books. I tend to set it for an attainable amount so I don’t feel pressured to read but I’ll raise it if necessary.
I’ve read 4 books so far this year: - Broadway Butterfly: 4 stars, it was slow but an interesting true crime book - MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios: 4 stars. I’m not a big marvel fan but thought this was fascinating. Lots of cool stories from actors and insiders - Don’t Let Her Stay: 4 stars. This was a wild ride. It was one of those completely ridiculous thrillers that isn’t the best writing but I couldn’t put it down - The Lies You Wrote: 2.5 stars. Meh. This was also ridiculous but not in a good way
I’m reading We Were Once a Family now and it’s terrific so far. Very sad but fascinating.

I need some help. I’ve added 2 books that I’ve read on Goodreads but neither is showing up in my challenge list.

If I just put them in “read,” it doesn’t go to my challenge, I guess because it doesn’t know when I read them? But if I mark them as “reading” and then immediately as “read” it will go in my current challenge.

I think I’m going to start my first Harlan Corban book. I saw it was a series and the trailer looked good but I felt I should read the book first. It’s fool me once We are going to start watching the Netflix show based on this book. I haven’t read it but I’ve enjoyed others by him.

I just finished Hello Stranger by Katherine Center. Super tropey but still charming. Cute premise, smart dialogue, a tidy ending. I gave it a 4. But it was more like a 3,5.

👎 = the writing sucked or was mediocre, but I enjoyed it (see mass market thrillers, romance etc) 👍 = the writing and structure was good, but it just didn't hit or the ending was awful
At least thestorygraph has quarter stars so I can see which are 3.25 and 3.75.
How does everyone score things?

Thank you so much to dc2london and everyone who suggested In Five Years. What a fantastic, emotional book. I absolutely loved it!

I finished Evil Eye tonight and wow. I think I need a therapy session just to talk about it. In a good way. I had so much emotional connection to the main character. I feel like I just loved her life. She was so realistically written. The themes were so strong and all the feels were so big. Definitely some trigger warnings for physical and emotional abuse. But I do highly recommend it.

I finished listening to Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President. It was a book I read for my decades of reading challenge. It was about President Garfield and his assassination. I didn’t realize that he died due to the horrific decisions made by his medical team and not the actual bullet itself (like people repeatedly sticking their unclean hands into his body to search for the bullet, along with unclean medical equipment - no one believed in sanitizing things back then and basically mocked people who suggested such a thing, worrying about “invisible germs”). I also learned that Alexander Graham Bell (telephone) was involved in helping invent something to help find the bullet . A very interesting read that I know I never would have read if it wasn’t for that challenge, which is exactly why I decided to do it.

I always take into account the audience. So I judge YA differently than books geared towards adults. Or a mass market thriller/romance differently than the latest Booker prize.
I always give stars for good writing. And I give 5's for any books that I love or really enjoy. I'm not a literary critic and my 5's are attainable LOL. But I also will absolutely give a 2 if I think a book was just really dumb or I think the writer has talent and misused it. I only give 1's if I really, really hated a book and I don't think I've given one in years. I think writing a book is hard and most people getting published are doing a decent job. Plus I'm not going to download or buy a book that I think might be awful. But if I read something and don't understand the hype and don't think it's anything special, it's getting a 3.

It’s fool me once I haven’t read that one but I’ve enjoyed most of the books that I’ve read by him. I did feel that some of his older books were a bit dated in mindset and how they treated certain characters but even if you don’t like that one, his newer ones are fun. I’ve heard that once I get started I’ll be reading all his

junch817, I just added Destiny to my libby wish list. It sounds fascinating! I can't keep up with new releases so I am currently reading Ms. Demeanor. It's fast-paced and funny so far. This is my first book by the author so I will check out her other titles too.

Just got my 2023 audible stats and I was a couple minutes shy of 15000 listening minutes. That doesn’t include everything on Libby I also listened to 😬😬 so yes, I like the audio books 😂

I haven't read Evil Eye yet.

I finished Animal Farm. It was what I expected, I guess? I’m glad I listened to it.
I just had John Stamo’s memoir come up on Libby, so that will probably be my next audiobook.

I’m pretty generous with my ratings. I give a lot more 5 stars than most people do. 😂 Mine are for sure based on how much I enjoyed a book vs. it being a treasured piece of literature. The timing of when I read a book and my mood for sure impact how many stars it will get. Sometimes I look back at my ratings and change them. For example, I gave It Ends With Us a good rating - probably because it did grab my attention and held my interest. But after processing it a bit, I realized that I really would not recommend it to other people and have no desire to read the sequel. It goes both ways - if I realize a book has stuck with me for a long time I'll probably bump it up.

I read Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier and really enjoyed it. Some of it was predictable but I still thought it was a pretty good thriller. 4.5 stars.

I finished Lessons in Chemistry and enjoyed it a lot. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I know it’s not a romcom based on talk here but the blab on Goodreads really makes it sound like it is. I finished it 20min before the audio loan was due back
