This is our basement which is mostly toys (lined along where I'm sitting). The stairs are not safe. They are fine for M unless she is being silly. P can go up and down with supervision but it's quite a fall to the side there. I'm picturing like a net or something? Also very yellow. But not looking for big reno since it's basically a toy dump.

I'm asking for a stair safety fix. I wasn't clear.

Seriously though, if you're going to do something about it, put in a proper railing. That's an accident waiting to happen.

Something like this? You could probably using netting, plastic ties and then install some hooks on the bottom to add the netting. Adding railing would be a more secure option. I'm not sure how much weight the netting would be able to support. Edit: This may cause climbing issues. I'd go with railing for safety. Especially since you can't gate the stairs.

^^ I feel like this is designed to more fully enclose an existing railing that no longer meets code. Netting isn't going to do much in stringy's situation other than provide a false sense of security.

My aunt had a staircase that was open on the side in her house. Actually the house had been in the family for several generations and somehow kids were fine, but when she had grandkids she had the staircase redone and had a banister with spindles put up. It looks like that would probably be the best solution.

Yeah, I think a proper railing with spindles is the best choice. You could prob find a local handyman who would do a side job for you

Throw a few mattresses under it, in the fall zone.
Perhaps a strategically placed trampoline?

In all serious. Proper railing? Vertical. You must mean then huh. The one there is pretty cheapy and simple.

Can you use one of those fence things to keep her from accessing the stairs unsupervised? My aunt had a large flexible baby gate thing to block off the area where her stairs were before she got them fixed.

Yea we have one of those - but she's never down there unsupervised anyway. I suppose it would work to keep her from going over and climbing the stairs always - since apparently its the most fun thing to do ever. I sometimes use that obnoxious pink tent to block access.
But it is a safety hazard in general, I suppose.

Another vote for a real railing. You could probably DIY it or any contractor.

You've seen my house - outdoor stairs - only handrails, like yours. Barely passed inspection. Building inspector scoffed when he saw it after we moved in. We've gone the tough love approach. I'd go with mattresses.

This reminds me. After E cut her head on the step in my living room, both grandmas asked me what I was going to do to the step so it wouldn't happen again. Umm, remind the kids what can happen if they aren't careful by the step?

Yeah I think a railing would do the trick. I'm surprised that wasn't required to be fixed when you bought the house! Our insurance company made us fix a couple things like that when we bought our house.

I agree with the railing.

Our basement stairs look just like that. Actually every house I've lived in they have looked like that. Our stair tread is open in front and the back too. We don't use our basement for play much so we haven't done anything with it.
My vote for the safest fix is to put in spindles.
