Not sure how it already April, but here we are! I have nothing for the girl's Easter baskets. I wish DD1 would admit to knowing so it would be a little easier to shop for the candy and stuff when she is around.
Do we need to start an April Covid thread?

I totally blanked on Easter being a week from tomorrow and am furiously trying to figure out dinner and baskets. The 15YO has his first in the road drivers Ed training session today, I am anxious and will exhale when I pick him up from it.
I vote that we stop the monthly Covid specific threads and just include it in our randoms discussion, it is as much a part of our daily lives as stomach bugs, strep, etc.

For April fools day we had a blizzard. Yay!
I dug myself out of the garage and driveway and slowly made my way to work, because the library is EsSeNtIaL

Happy April fools day Hope you don't get pranked
As to covid thread. Let's see how it goes. In March the covid thread became a lot of illnesses mixed in cause when you first get sick who knows what it is, right?
If it's too much then a spin off thread for sick/covid?
As to covid, I already knew cause I've watched the numbers rise and az moving toward number 1 in the charts.
But others around me were shocked to learn this week that az has highest state covid 3 yr death per capita in the US. 581 per 100,000 people. People thought it was highest in places like NY.

I think getting rid of the COVID thread is a good idea but I also rarely went in there anymore because it’s just become another part of the background bullshit to think about with illnesses.

My kid has been sick for about 3 weeks now. Was sent home with a fever on a Tuesday and couldn't go back because of continued fevers until the following week, then sent home again last Friday with a fever. The never ending cough, etc etc. We went to the walk in clinic after the first round of 4 days of fever and horrible cough (we did a phone consult with the nurse who thought it sounded like a croup cough) and the doctors basically patted me on my back and said its fine, after they swabbed for strep, flus, and covid and all came back negative.
I took her back in yesterday because she's not getting better and this doctor was so much better. Swabbed again for all the things, but also did a chest x-ray because she said her lungs sounded gravely - said her fever that comes and goes, with the wracking cough, plus the lung sounds was suspicious to her of pneumonia. X-ray came back clear from pneumonia but indicitive of some kind of respiratory infection - either RSV or something else. Also dx'd her with an ear infection (which I think she caught early because she hadn't complained of ear pain yet) and tonsillitis. This amounted to a 3.5 hour visit (including the lengthy wait to get in a room and then to be seen).
So now we finally have some antibiotics and got a nebulizer. She's already feeling a ton better and slept through the night (and I slept through the night for the first time in weeks in my own bed).
And lucky for us this week is spring break so she has a week to get better.

fatpony, That's so much happening! I'm glad she's feeling better. My middle kid had something similar in December and the nebulizer made a world of difference. It jump-started the healing.

A member of our local school board reached out to me on Nextdoor (where I spend a lot of time arguing with the olds about why they should support our schools) and said he has decided not to run for reelection and was wondering if I would be interested 😬
I can't say it hasn't crossed my mind, especially with the crazies we've had try to run in recent years, but I'm not sure I have it in me right now

We got a letter in the mail today that the district screwed up in filing for free lunch for the year so it was no longer covered. And then a bill for what we owe for the past month. Apparently they figured this out in March but didn't deign to tell parents.
Thankfully we are able to pay the bill, but I feel bad for parents that are not and were not expecting one.
Can't we just feed our kids?

I need help! I am helping to set up our Friday staff game. The person has to sing (or say) a song with that contains one of the following
1. A girls name 2. A boys name 3. A color 4. The name of a city or state 5. The word "Love"
But I need more topics.

Omg. I read klw’s post as needing songs that contained all those items. I was just about to google Jack and Diane lyrics to see if it fit the bill. I also was thinking that seemed like a very tough game.

But I need a few options so that people aren’t copying off of each other. 🙄🤣 We got the idea from this TikTok. www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRT8QmBp/

So I learned about The Normal Gossip podcast from here or GD which is good escapism. I heard about a newer podcast called Make Me Care About with Jen Hatmaker. It sounds so interesting as a way to know more about the world in a politics adjacent way. Has anyone listened? Edit: I heard about it on Pantsuit Politics.

I met with the school board member that will not be seeking reelection on Fri. I think it would be a good fit for me, even though the timing could be better. Our county's Democrat org is having a "thinking of running for public office?" event on Thursday so I'm planning on going to that. The campaigning, fundraising, creating a committee, etc, seems pretty daunting, but I'm probably overcomplicating things in my mind

We had DS’s IEP meeting today. It went really well. His special Ed team really gets him and worked hard to create a document that should set him up for success next year.
Part of our discussion involved compensatory services for time lost during the pandemic. We all agreed that he was affected by the lost services in terms of social skills. They invited us to submit receipts for his social skills and EF therapies during that time with the possibility of reimbursement. So now I need to figure out how to get those receipts. They were paid out of an FSA and I didn’t anticipate needing the paperwork again. 😬

I thought I would share how the room transformation went. We got the other day bed a few weeks ago but just put the bed tents (for privacy when needed) up last night. They seem to like the side by side beds! A big thanks to ikea for having twin beds with privacy dividers on the show room floor when we went earlier this year. It really stuck with me, and made this transformation happen 😆 (though I don’t think anything in their room is ikea…)

VA friends. SOL question. We got a form home to sign about approving an automatic retest if your child is close to passing the SOL, but doesn't. There is a good chance that will be the case for DD1 in an area or two. The first time it came home, I read it and threw it out (there was no sign and return if you decline). Another one came home and DD1 was like you are supposed to sign this, I was like I don't think so. I emailed her teachers and asked what incentive does that student personally have to retake the test if it doesn't affect their grades or record? They sent my email up the food chain and I got a reply that my decline was noted and they would be in direct contact with me if my daughter was eligible, no other explanation.
What am I missing here? Is this just desperate schools wanting passing grades? Why would I make her take them again? (why am I having her take them in the first place?!)
ETA she came home with another one today and was like mom you are confused you are supposed to sign this. 🤦♀️

Help me out.
Tl;dr What do I get the TA who saved my 4 year olds life yesterday when she did the heimlich on her at lunch?
Long story. Got a call from the school nurse yesterday that my kid choked on a piece of fruit at lunch but that she's fine and the kept her in the nurse's office for a bit to make sure there weren't any other issues but she was back in class and happy. In my head I assumed they just did a back slap on her or that she "choked" like little kids sometimes do.
I run into her teacher after pickup and i am being very casual and I said something like, well, I figured they didn't have to heimlich her since she stayed in school. And the teacher tells me they did! Now I feel like an asshole because the TA who SAVED HER LIFE came up to me at pickup to ask if the nurse called me and I was all very breezy about it.
After I get home her teacher sent me a message apologizing that the nurse wasn't clear and that the principal was aware if I wanted to talk to her about it. Honestly, my kid is acting like nothing happened so I'm feeling ok with everything because they must have been so calm and collected that she wasn't freaked out at all.
So, I need to get a gift for Ms. Shalaya. And I also need to write a letter to the principal and superintendent to sing her praises and get her some kind of commendation.

Holy fuck, fatpony. I’m so glad your DD is okay. Thank goodness for that TA. I’d definitely be writing a heartfelt card to her about how I am eternally grateful, and likely get my child to draw a picture/write a note for her. I’d also probably send flowers to her at school as well. And, of course, sing her praises to the school administrators.

They need as many students to pass as possible to hold onto accreditation and funding, so they push the retakes. If retaking the test is going to elevate her anxiety, I definitely wouldn’t subject her to it. I don’t think there’s really impact on her from passing a retake other than possibly placing out of remediation in the subjects she is struggling with. And really, getting the remediation services is likely to be beneficial to her if she is struggling.
