Hi! At DD2’s 5 year well check she was dx with anisometropia, basically a difference in the refraction between her eyes, with that little red light thingie (the technical term, obviously)- Google tells me photoscreener is a better term. We have our appt at the children’s hospital ophthalmology clinic next week, and I just wanted to get some anecdotes. It seems like the most common treatment is just glasses, unless it’s something more serious than just eyesight, and I’m trying not to think about that path until we get more information at this appt. Our pedi ( piratecat) said these machines can be overly sensitive and they err on the side of being extra cautious, so I’m also keeping that caveat in mind. UPDATE: Tl;dr DD2 is getting glasses! She has different prescriptions between her eyes, and her right eye is particularly bad. So we will try corrective lenses, and then follow up in four months. At that point the doc will determine if patching is needed. She hasn’t complained of vision issues, so I was really surprised by her eye exam. She was such a good sport through the eye drops/dilation, and she enjoyed picking out frames. I knew the chances of something pathological were low, but it was still a relief that it’s just her vision and nothing worse. PDQ pic of her with her new frames. Should be ready in 2 weeks or so!

I should note that she has never complained about being able to see well at home or at school, and I have specifically asked her that question.

Also my dad is a pediatrician, but I’m purposely avoiding telling my parents about this until we know more. My family has been through the ringer in the last couple years with medical stuff.

Interesting. This term has never been said to me, but I have this. I'm farsighted in one eye and nearsighted in the other. I didn't find out until I was a teenager. I wore glasses for a while just for reading and at night if I was in an area I wasn't familiar with. Last time I had my eyes checked, the doc actually said it's not bad to have this now because they've determined it means you're unlikely to need glasses when you get older if you have it.
All that to say, yes, probably just glasses for now to correct some of the imbalance. The difference between the two eyes can cause headaches sometimes, so the glasses "pull" them back together to the same focus.

Definitely keep what your pediatrician said in mind. That machine said DD had strabismus, and she 100% did not. It’s hard to keep kids still for that thing, and I feel it leaves a good margin of error. Glad they’re being proactive though!

When my son was 4, that machine had our pediatrician getting us a rush appointment at the pediatric ophthalmologist only to be told when we got there that his eyesight was perfect and those machines give a lot of false readings.
Obviously, follow up, but also try not to dwell on it til then. Just know there is a good chance that it is nothing.

This is kind of the sister condition to amblyopia. My DD was diagnosed with amblyopia in 1st grade after a school screening. She has been seen regularly by a pediatric ophthalmologist since. Her vision was 20/20 in her right eye, 20/200 in her left. She pacthed 3 hours a day for a full year and her left eye improved to 20/25, which is about as good as gets with amblyopia. She still wears the amblyopia specific glasses, but will be switching to one contact lens when we all feel she can manage a lens.
The evaluation appointment was quite long, but the follow ups have all been quite short, kind of typical appts.
Anyway, it freaked me out a bit when she was first diagnosed, but she is now in middle school and there has never been any issues. Feel free to ask me any questions.

@lucilloaustero thank you so much! That helps me a lot. I scheduled an appt at 8 am on a minimum school day, and was wondering if I should plan to just keep her out for the day. I will do that. And I will bring plenty of snacks for DS for the appt in case it is long.
I did see the condition your DD has as a possibility, and that patching was a possibility. I will be at least mentally prepared for that as an option.

I wore an eye patch for a little while as a kid. My right eye has strabismus, and I needed to strengthen it. The vision in my right eye is like 20/80, but in my left eye I’m currently like 20/30. I used to be 20/20 in my left, but I’m getting old -🤷🏾♀️
I didn’t have the proper care consistently as a kid, so I continued to rely on my strong eye too heavily.
My son has a similar issue, but they think him wearing glasses in childhood will correct the issue.

Another eye patch kid here! Mine was strabismus from esotropia (crossed eyes). I did have to have surgery on my eyes when I was about 1 year old so it seems like you are likely well past that kind of intervention. My only side effects as an adult are having to wear glasses, having shitty depth perception, and not being able to see 3D movies because my eyes don’t work at the same time lol. So ultimately I’m hopeful for you that even if her diagnosis is accurate that it’s a minor blip on the radar of her life.

I'm also near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other. Current Rx is +0.75, -2.5. I was patched as a small child and had several surgeries (they overcorrected to start with - my last surgery was when I was in 7th grade). Nothing detrimental in life - I played sports that required depth perception (hockey and volleyball). Like bunnyfungo I can't do 3D movies or the seeing eye books, but that's about it. As I get older, the biggest thing now is that I can't do cheaters for glasses, so I had to get progressives and apparently some people with the same condition have trouble with progressives (the brain can't handle the input and will make them nauseous). I do think the correction doesn't work the best because I still have trouble with close up stuff. But I probably need to re-asses with the eye doctor. Good luck!

Thank you all so much! This gives me a much better idea of what to potentially expect at her appt.

As a kid who got glasses early raising a kid who got glasses early, vision is a funny thing.
You rarely complain bc you don’t know what you’re supposed to be able to see, so you just adapt!
I hope she loves her new glasses!
DS got his at age 4 and it’s took us a few pairs to find a brand that fit well on those little noses. Happy to share tips and tricks if you ever need them to thrive in that glasses life.

There is so much I didn't know about the way glasses should fit on little faces until the possibility of it came up for my DS as well. There is also a FB group called For Little Eyes that has lots of really good info and knowledgeable people, if you're interested thatgolfb!

Such a cute bespectacled peanut!!
Her vision sounds a lot like mine. Glasses are so much better than they’ve ever been. No more bottle cap lenses. I hope she thrives in her new pair!

My DD has glasses (prescribed at age 5 as well). We have always had good luck with GlassesUSA. Also, if you're a Costco member, they have decent kid glasses AND will adjust glasses you get from other places. There are so many fun glasses for kids now. I'm so glad it's not something more than just vision!
