DD has a cold. Yesterday, I was sure it had turned to an ear infection because her left ear hurt so badly. Today, she woke up and vomited. A few minutes later, she said her hair was stuck to her ear. I looked, and it’s all covered in gross, dark colored wax. Her ear doesn’t hurt anymore, and her stomach is totally fine. She’s 10, so I feel like I can trust her. She’s going to the dr at 2 anyway, but does anyone have any experience with a burst eardrum? Do I need to get her in faster or is it fine to wait? Is it possible her eardrum burst?

Sounds like it perforated/ruptured. My DS had it happen during a sports fall and he described it as being a hissing feeling and he had reduced hearing for a few weeks. His healed on its own and I believe that most do. Hope she feels better soon!

I have had this happen a few times. Reduced hearing for a few weeks but no further intervention needed. I think you can just keep the 2:00 appt. Hope she feels better soon. It's absolutely miserable. The relief I have felt after the perforation was immense and immediate.

I’ve had my eardrum rupture several times, and this sounds like what I experienced. The 2 pm appointment should be fine. My experience was similar to previous posters - reduced hearing for a few weeks, but it eventually healed.

Thanks everyone! I’ve calmed down. I’m glad we already had an appointment.

The dr confirmed the rupture and got us set up on all the antibiotics! Her other ear is also infected. Poor kid.

Poor girl! I hope she feels back to normal quickly. My niece had this happen and said that side sounded “underwater” for a couple of weeks.

That happened once to one of my kids. I was mad at myself for not realizing he had an ear infection until gross stuff started coming out of his ear 😬 It also ended up being a double ear infection. We got antibiotics for the infection and it resolved, and has never happened again - it’s been 4+ years now.
