Holy crap to that thread elle.
Yeah, there's a lot going on there, even more than I expected. Will be interesting to see who else gets charged in the future.

Yeah, my H wasn't supposed to get another job while in his PhD program. Granted we were in Ohio, but a stipend of 11K (which has risen to 14K from a quick perusal of the website... big money) for the 9 month term is jack shit. He worked in a coffee shop, too. Only workable because his program wasn't lab-work.

People definitely moonlighted illegally, especially grad students and post docs with kids. One colleague who is now tenured at an R1 worked 30 hours a week as an RN in addition to research and TAing. He entered grad school in his late 20s and already had a large family - it was what he had to do. And he was honestly an exceptional person in his abilities to juggle it all. For most of us, working second jobs meant less time to work on your own dissertation research and added years before graduation, so a major opportunity cost. Some grad students had family support and some took out student loans for emergencies. I got lucky when I started shacking up with H - he had graduated with a real engineering job by our third year, so I had secure housing. But I knew multiple postdoc and grad student families with kids that relied on local food banks to make it through the month because their salary went straight to rent and childcare. And they were the ones pushing out the cutting edge research that the University was so proud of. It was all just backwards and wrong. The grad students, research assistants and post docs asked for pay increase at wa univ. The univ specifically Said grad students added no value to the university. So they formed a union. And are asking for more pay collectively Son gets tuition and a small paycheck so they say that's enough as a grad student. He "works" 20 hrs a week teaching lab classes. But then there's the grading all papers for profs classes that takes at least 10 hrs. He's required to "work" at least 10 hrs a week on research projects that the school/profs got huge grants for. But the tests they are running on berkleys labs at night so several days a week he's going to school, teaching lab, doing homework, trying to formulate his own PhD program research and then staying up all night from 8pm to 8am remotely babysitting experiments. Burning candle at both ends. Yep, sounds like grad school. My grad program also prohibited getting a second job, but honestly I don't know when I would have found time to work a second job anyway; 12-14 hour days in the lab 6 days a week was not unheard of and my commute was an hour each way. There were times where it didn't even make sense to go home at night and I (along with many of my lab mates) would just crash under our desks or in the break room. I lived in Los Angeles and received $20K a year to live on...my rent was about $1K a month so I learned to economize real quick. I was lucky that I was able to use the public transit (and get the student rate) to commute to and from school, otherwise I would have had to shell out another $1-2K per year for a parking pass. Ultimately, I had to take out some student loans to allow me to get by. Going into grad school I thought I was getting a great deal! Tuition covered, health insurance (really crappy health insurance, btw), and a stipend! I thought I hit the jackpot...I knew I would have to work hard, long hours, but I had no idea how much I would struggle financially and the additional stress that would add. Ultimately, I'm glad I got my Ph.D. but I wish someone had given me a more realistic picture of what to expect.

all the comments about her accent 🤣 Someone mentioned a Gretch/Katie P ticket... 🤔 Her accent is an ENTIRE situation but it definitely shouldn't be held against her. Just let SNL do their thing, it will probably help her in the end. Has there been an SNL skit already?? And really I'm like...what accent? 😉

I would be 100% ok with the R’s losing a house seat because they got to the find out stage of F around.

Yeah, I was also in the union at the UCs that’s on strike when I was in grad school and it just wasn’t a sustainable system.
When my brother was a postdoc he and my SIL moved in with my parents and he just commuted hours each day because there was no way, even with her working 2 jobs that they could afford housing in CA.
It’s a mess.

I find myself vacillating wildly between "pfffft not everything is a concerted effort to destroy progress" and "holy shit the 1% is doing everything short of literally ritually sacrificing the rest of us on the altar of capitalism"
So that's fun.

oh. Thank you! We have added your email address to the waiting list — you are currently #212093. So is this the place to be post Twitter? So far, I'm 'meh' about it. It's very left-wing-opinion-writer-types heavy. Not a ton of journalists who actually report news or news outlets yet. A lot of the people who I follow don't really post much and those who do seem to have their tweets automatically cross-posted. It's also not very diverse at all. I'm essentially trying to recreate my Twitter follow list as a back-up in case Twitter dies for news aggregation purposes. But I only have 120 or so people to follow on Post whereas I have 1120 people on Twitter. All that said, it's in beta and they're adding people slowly. So it could get better. But I don't think any site is going to serve the multitude of purposes that Twitter does for me anytime in the near future tbh.

The main investor in Post is also a thin-skinned, right-wing venture capitalist asshole so it all feels kind of pointless tbh.

At the university I worked at, we were not allowed to hire graduate assistants into any other job classes. They were very strict about it in part because they were afraid of a grad assistant strike/unionization. And the GAs technically were not supposed to have jobs elsewhere but I think a number did just to afford rent/utilities/food. (When I was a grad assistant, I had two other jobs and just didn't tell anyone. But I was just a TA and not a RA involved in research and could get away with it as I brought my TA work home to do.) People definitely moonlighted illegally, especially grad students and post docs with kids. One colleague who is now tenured at an R1 worked 30 hours a week as an RN in addition to research and TAing. He entered grad school in his late 20s and already had a large family - it was what he had to do. And he was honestly an exceptional person in his abilities to juggle it all. And they were the ones pushing out the cutting edge research that the University was so proud of. It was all just backwards and wrong. This is so fucked up. I'm quite certain my grad system isn't any better since we get sent research and postgrad/postdoc listings from time to time that say 14-16 an hour. Taco Bell here pays 19 per hour.

I can totally see this. I was a first generation college student and attended my state's flagship with the full pell grant, scholarships, and a dollop of student loans. My DD does not even want to tour our state's flagship. It has turned into an insanely competitive place - the vast majority of the seats go to the top SIX percent of kids from in-state high schools- and she has zero interest in that environment. We are also chasing merit/scholarship money because we are STILL paying off MH's student loans. She is looking at flagships in other states and more regional schools in our state and other places. We have seen some wild things at these smaller schools. It's really obvious that lots of them are struggling.
